My rock autos are still going strong nearly a year and a half after buying them. I had some issues because of the 2zz injectors and running rich but these have held up well!

Hi, a long time updating this forum but I have done such a lot since then.
Anyway the orginal fault code where I replaced the right hand sensor has not recurred after doing about 3K miles. The left hand sensor I inserted a 15 Ohm 15 watt resistor ( very easy job pics supplied if req) also has not recurred and the car runs sweet as nut. Since the I have replaced the old pre-cat manifold with a shiny new one from Mr2 Ben and that has made a HUGE difference to the car all round better to drive. No faults anyway, so both fixes, a £2 resistor and a £56 sensor both fixed it with no effect on emissions or running as I had it tested at MOT station. Ill leave you to decide what you would do if this happens to you.

As mentioned in WHYD thread I bought a £12.97 primary sensor off eBay 3 weeks before MOT. No EML so at least the heater cct was working. Failed MOT big time on emissions.
After a thorough bollocking from my mechanic for buying a £13 sensor, I bought the Denso unit & immediately passed the MOT.

I bought a £25 one and no EML either but I monitored the response from it and after a few days it just reported lean constantly, so the fuel trims were maxxed.
I guess that might fail an MOT emissions test [emoji53]

Honestly consider hunting around for OEM (Denso/Bosch) as they're not THAT much more if you find the right source and there's infinitely less hassle as it is plug and play: screw in the one side, plug in the other, no wiring / soldering / anything else...

I saw a few generic models for ~£30-£40, but they still needed plugs to be attached: IMHO the best option would be OpieOils for the Denso DOX0204 £53.80, delivery is free if you spend more than £60 (i.e. two sensors and/or a 22mm spanner and/or 22mm sensor socket). Not sure on delivery times though as I found out about OpieOils too late!

I ended up picking up the first two from GSF (Bosch DOX0204 equivalents) that cost me £62 each for the manifold sensors and ~£57 for the post-cat one, but that was a Denso DOX0206.

Note that the only reason I went to GSF is that I was being impatient and they had a 60% Easter special.... without that, it was £155, which is only a little less than Toyota would have charged for fitting Denso's!!

None of the options I went for required ANY splicing/wiring of resistors... they were just unplug/unscrew the originals and plug/screw these into place....

77k mileage on my 53'reg 2

PO135 Bank 1 Sensor 1 just came on recently.

Toyota main stealer quoted £500 for 2 hrs labour and replacing 2 sensors.

Looking through this incredibly helpful thread going way back when, would it be prudent to replace all 3 sensors with eg Denso OEM parts at ~£180 + diy.

Are the sensors reqd.

2x DOX0204 and 1 DOX0206 ?? Thx in advance

If you don't mind a bit of extra work.
You can get ones without the connectors a lot cheaper. And swap them over.
As per @shnazzle recommendation.
Personally, I would rather pay.

Sparkplugs.co.uk is a good place to start.

I just used a used spare one I had from my Subaru Legacy - 10 minutes work and it's been on for 2 years without fault!!

Asking around for quotes I have managed to get £327 for all 3(Denso) supplied and fitted from an MR2 specialist :- absolutely no comparison!

Just insane these prices they're charging. And further confirms why I never ever go to a dealer unless I have no option. 

... Which is why I'm sitting in a Nissan dealership waiting for a part as I type this hahaha

We have an independent 1 km. down the road. Whenever I consider changing cars, fírst I ask them about whether they service it and they will honestly say if they have no experience with it. Is so, no go. A trusted garage near is like a good neighbour.

I was quoted ~£700 for all three and they could only do it in two weeks... did it all myself and everything together (parts and tools) came in <£200... a few days later it all arrived in the post and 20mins "labour" and I was sorted, look at the thread I wrote on this for the exact parts list (this it was somethign about MOT emissions failure).

Parts breakdown was something like:

Denso/Bosch parts (2x ~£60 and 1x ~£45) - and that's the posh ones, with the plugs!
ELM327 OBD2 reader (~£5)
Torque Pro software (~£4?)
O2 socket (~£7)
22mm spanner (~£7)

Only difficult bit was the lower sensor - a quick trip to Halfords for a 22mm spanner saved me there - no WAY that was coming off with the socket!

I would just change the one that is giving the error unless you feel you have a problem. They dont like being disturbed and they can fail about the same time so the other bank may follow soon anyway (I seem to remember mine doing that). The pre cat ones are accessed from the top and mine came out fine. The post cat one is lower and is subject to more corrosion and is the hardest to get out, I had to admit defeat with my lower one and take it to a garage where they really struggled with it too. Maybe this is why they quote a lot of labour time but I doubt they drop the bill if they get it out easily! Even if you decide to take it to a garage, I would start plus gassing the sensors a few days before to make it easier for them (plus tell them you have done that so let them know you are not an idiot and lessen the chances of them ripping you off).

I would go for Densos too and if you buy the crimp on universal model, you would get all 3 for about £100 for the parts.

Co-incidentally, all my parts have arrived today to swop mine over. The densos come with the crimps etc but I had to buy the bits for mine. I hope to get shrink wrap over each crimp and then over the top of all four.

Nine years ago whenI first got my 2 I removed the precats, when I put it all back together I got a fault light, it was the top nearside sensor. I asked a mechanic relation what to do. His advice was that I only need replace the faulty one, they are not like spark plugs and to only buy branded sensors, he typically used Bosch, but others are fine, just not eBay specials.
I replaced the one with an NGK. Around two years later the rearmost nearside one failed, again replaced with NGK. So I have one Denso OE, came with the car, and two NGK. So far no problems running problem passing MOT.

Asking around for quotes I have managed to get £327 for all 3(Denso) supplied and fitted from an MR2 specialist :- absolutely no comparison!
Apologies if I'm reading too much into it. And the specailst is just for cost reference purposes.
But you don't need a specailst for this job.

I bought my car with 26000 miles on, the light came on at about 45000, I replaced the top left sensor, at about 59000 I decided to de cat the manifold and after that I have had the top right one fault,I replaced it and the light went out.

**after 2 warm up / cool down cycles of the engine if there are no issues the light will go out**

And then the light came on again so I bought a code reader from ebay 'Creader' (it was £18.50) it reads all codes but not air bag.
YOU SHOULD BUY A CHEAP CODE READER !!! it is an essential tool for under £20.

My code reader said the rear one was faulty so I cleared the code and it came back in a day, I replaced the rear sensor and since then it has been 'ok' the light comes on but goes out again, I notice it about once a month, I very seldom have to clear it myself, it just goes out on its own. But the code reader is good for if it gets to MOT time and the light is on I can clear it myself and not get charged £30 on top of the MOT.

I put the number of sensors I have replaced down to milage and possibly engine bay temp because when I worked at Toyota 1994-1999 I never replaced an O2 sensor. (they never broke).

I put my light coming on erraticly now due to removing the front cat and it disrupting the gasss escaping (when you de cat and look into the exhaust manifold the pipework when de-catted does not look good for efficient gas extraction), Its not an issue, because I have the code reader and i am saving up for a ZERO manifold because I can't afford a Pro spirit one, and to be honest the zero looks better.

If you have Android, then an ELM327 for £7 + Torque Pro (was £3, now £4.50)...

Zero manifolds are great, but I gave up waiting to sav enough and got a Toyosport - I only paid £90 for mine incl delivery direct from Toyosport this time last year... plus another £40 (I think!) on accessories like proper gaskets, studs and nuts... plus some heatwrap.

Hi, with your Toyosport manifold the join between the manifold and CAT pipe does it have a flat gasket instead of the two crush gaskets ? If it does did you have any sealing issues ?
