Track friendly 300-400 bhp?

I've done a few trackdays in the MR2 now and I love the balance but unfortunately the lack of power even with the 2ZZ is telling.

What are my options for getting above 300, ideally near 400 crank horsepower while keeping some track reliability. It doesn't help that on some of the track days I'm planning my friends are bringing some ridiculous machinery and my fun road car is 700 bhp.

Is it worth staying with a 2ZZ? I'm tempted to stay with the MR2 platform and maybe go for a K20? Any reason a supercharged K20 can't make mid 350 bhp like in Lotus applications?

Selling and changing cars would be my last choice to be honest.

You have a number of engine options, but on track at those suit of power levels, you are going to need bigger brakes, which means bigger wheels and you will lose the original feel of the car. It is possible to fade the pads completely, even in road, with that sort of power.

Engine wise, Rotrex boosted 2zz makes most financial sense for you.
Ex 2GR-FE roadster. Sold it. Idiot.  Now Jaguar XE-S 380. Officially over by the bins.

Boosted K20 or possibly a built or boosted V6. There's always the Toyota 3GSTE engine/transaxle which can be a reliable 350+bhp.

Honestly, for that power, I'd be looking elsewhere. You'll be moving towards a £10k-£15k budget which can get you to a more power-ready starting point in terms of car. LIke a Cayman, and strip it bare or a ratty VX220 Turbo.

Around £5k for rotrex 350 bhp
2zz by Rogue. Se7en cams. BMC CDA. Competion clutches lightened flywheel, Megillian Racing Exhaust. TRD sportivo suspension and ARB\'s. TRD braces. TRD quick shift. TRD dash kit, Matts brace. Getting there but not sure when it will stop!

I wouldn't spend 10-15k on this project.

Standalone ECU and a rotrex c30 94 will see you to around 350 but it won't be cheap.
Supercharger is 1600 on its own.
The ECU would be another 1500 minimum.
And there is loads more on top of that.

K20 would be my choice for big power but you aren't going to do that even close to cheap.

A straight 2gr swap could see you at 300bhp. That's probably in the region of 8k.

Hate to say this but what about an NA vx220 with the GM supercharger kit.
The one I went for a spin in was silly quick.
Lighter and  handles better than an MR2. It's a lotus Elise after all.

I am going forged 1zz for mine and aiming for low 300s, the 2zz should make a bit more power, the engine isn't really the issue its the gearbox that will be the limiting factor.

Regarding the need for some better brakes there are some project mu big brakes for sale on eBay search for zzw30 internationally.

The good news being that because of the light weight nature of the MR2 you don't need to go massive brakes  s:D :D s:D

I didn't like the look of those at all for the money he was after. I'd go willwoods - at least they offer a rear solution as well, so you can keep things balanced.

yellowspeed looks a decent option if you want to upgrade, also have a handbrake retaining rear setup

I'd be happy to give the standard brakes a go with some Carbotech/Carbon Lorraine and SRF before going for any brake upgrades. At the moment I don't get any brake fade and the ABS engages so the braking isn't the weak point.

The Rotrex sounds interesting. What kind of aftermarket ECU would be advised for a 2ZZ Rotrex? Apexi PFC is quite outdated now but they're still popular with these cars. Oil cooler, intercooler? I've got a Stage 3 clutch and a lightened flywheel already. If the gearbox does go then I can always buy uprated gears.

For the money I think ecumaster EMS black is the best value ECU.
Link storm is an excellent piece of kit.
Syvecs is probably overkill.
Not a fan of the PFC. No knock detection, Map sensor or wideband afr sensor.

I have an Apexi PFC but have gone back to running the stock ECU at the moment, these isn't a provision for a MAP sensor to be used only MAF although you can run data logging with the PFC on a laptop (Copilot) but its not the newest of ECUs, I will probably be getting the AEM EMS4 as its got lots of new features AND failsafes.

If you wanted you could look to run a stroker kit on the 2zz to increase it to almost 2 litres and also run Darton sleeves, think the MWR Celica running the E153 box conversion is at 666bhp.

There are a few Toyondas around with the K20, one sold on this forum a bit back, I am planning on keeping mine pure Toyota and 1zz so I can spend the money on the performance parts rather than swap kits etc.

Headcase can sort a Rotrex for you but it won't technically be a kit.
Superchargers need less custom plumbing than turbos.
TTS will supply all the rotrex bits ie supercharger pulley traction fluid cooler etc.

Se7en motorsports offer a walk in and out service - it includes the mapping and everything for £4700 last time I checked...

Keljon fun car is an R35 GTR. 2 of the guys that come to track days with us have a 675LT and a 488GTB + a 458 Speciale. Would love something that can surprise them in an unassuming package.

If £4700 includes a standalone ECU and all the labour then surely that's a very good deal? I think the whole car including purchasing an engine converted car, all the chassis upgrades and supercharger conversion will be around 10-12k.

VX220 is an option but fibreglass body is always a bit fragile. A supercharged elise with coilovers etc like mine would be 20k+

....and that looks like the F/I is included too? (I'm guessing the statement is just to justify the upcoming price)

I'm no mechanic, but it also looks like the injectors and ECU are included.... (please confirm what you can see there or even better if you contact them and confirm everything!)

This is definitely on the wishlist, but I'm working my way through their "pre-list" first, so I'm guessing I'm still a year away from one of these... summer 2019 maybe?

Intercooler included its a complete kit.
Won't be front mounted on a mid engine car.
