Just had a quick look Tony.
Seems to agree with most non commercial sources that performance air filters add little of nothing.
There is also a lot of evidence that removing stock air boxes and replacing with come filters only adds noise and possibly costs a few bhp.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Fully agree. That stock airbox is very very good.
I measured this and there was no gain in airflow. A loss with the DIY pipe with ebay filter.

But the noise is addictive and a good kit won't lead to losses so. Noise + no loss = :) .. For some.
Carolyn disagrees haha.

What I will say for aftermarket air intakes that don't maintain the stock maf profile is that an ECU of some description is REQUIRED.
The car fuels based on the MAF. Mess with the MAF calibration and results will be negative. End of.

I have a piggyback and still struggle getting the airflow adjustments right for the MAF tube I have.

... Keep the stock box :)

I cannot get any further than.
The 2ZZ uses the same filter.

If it's good enough for a 2ZZ.....................

I agree that the stock airbox is pretty good and as mentioned before its the same airbox that can supply the 2zz with air whilst in lift so fine for an NA 1zz and probably a lightly boosted 1zz.

I have recently swapped over to a cone filter behind the battery using the stock MAF tube (VERY important due to the diameter AND MAF height in the tube) - I don't think my setup gives any extra power up top but I have noticed it does give more midrange pull with slightly better throttle response.

For me I just wanted to try it and see if it makes a difference coupled with space and weight saving for the project car. 

Years ago I did see an old school testing method (found it and linked below) - basically avoid the metallic mesh cones and oiled mushroom foam filters

I guess everyone just needs to weigh up the comparison between a very slight loss in power but an addictive noise or a tiny bit more power but no noise - I know what I might want when taking it out on a sunny day.
