So on the weekend I decided to remove the bumper so that I could try and figure out why my frunk appeared to be super glued in place..

I managed to shear one bolt/screw thing – will need to figure out where you get new ones from...

But anyway – the bumper is off!

Next up was the front nappy.. first signs of this having been taken off were visible with the standard fixing that people use when the screw is lost ..

There were a couple of attachments on the sides that were well and truly encrusted and I found a new type of connector – straight head screw, which I've not seen before..

Anyway – managed to take that out

This exposed most of the underside so I could continue with my investigation into the reason for my frunk being so obstinate ....

In short, I couldn't find anything! Sooo.. that resulted in me using a "standard bodge tool" which I honestly never envisioned me having to use.

Funnily enough you just apply some light pressure over here and...

POP! The mystery superglue is dealt with!

Anyway – now this is the first time I've actually had a look in this part of the car – so I've taken a few pics for records.. if someone could explain what the red piping is for that would be nice!

Clearly there is some rust on a few key components – ARB and some pipes and a couple of brackets.. but I'm kind of happy that this initially look around doesn't seem to have shown anything tooo bad?

By red pipe do you mean the bleed hose thingy?
Very handy when you change rad.
Its just a clear hose you've got pink coolant like most of us.
If I have the wrong end of the stick then apologies.

Plastic tubes- Scotte covered that, except also for use when bleeding the cooling system (say - after engine swap or other coolant draining scenario)'

Great opportunity for a general wire-brush, rust-treat (look up Fertan) and zinc primer and paint especially those power steering pipes....  it'll be good for a few more years!

Oh and some graphite grease well rubbed in to the steering joint for good measure.

@1979scotte , @tomaky @Carolyn

Thank you very much! Yes that's the piping I was referring to!
Thank you for the background and additional use info - that's very helpful to know as it's next up on the list to do after de-rusting.
Steering joint has a LOT of molyb black weird stuff applied to it - but I'll be sure to get a load more onto it before I close it all.

Ah so it's the power steering pipes that are so rusty... Yeah I'll be doing those! I have a LOAD of black metal paint which you can apparently apply to straight to rusty metal (will try to get a pic of it), is that not sufficient or will I regret not priming etc first? I was planning on getting the rust off with a wire wheel/ brush and then applying the paint..

I also want to send my old power steering pump off for a refurb as the current D1ck sloan replacement has worn out now..

Carolyn

Seeing as you've done all that work to expose it all, I'd suggest the full treatment.  I tend not to believe what it says on the tin.  Any rust left under paint had a nasty habit of re-appearing.

Fair enough! I think I might have some other rust conversion treatment stuff some where.. something like kurust..

Try 90159-60603 for trim screw, 90119-06827 bolt, or local screwfix (midlife gave me bolt size, on my readers ride thread, can't remember, a6x10 maybe?)

So I've been continuing on my plan to secure away the MR2.
The doors were £90 off eBay and came with all the fittings... Then I've made another door to the left for when the family car blocks access to opening the main doors... Busy feather edging the whole thing now!

Times they are a changing!

It looks like I may have less time to get the car done than I had originally planned...

I have managed to convince another company that I'm worthwhile employing, the distance I will need to travel will make it uneconomical to run the S4 as well as it being down the country lanes... oops.

Que the most suitable car for the new job!

I reckon I've got about 6 weeks before I start, 2 of these weeks will be taken out due to training and vacation, so that leaves 4 weeks to get the new engine in! 3 of those 4 will be spent in normal working routine..

So!

Could people please remind me what I need for the engine swap in terms of fluids?
I'm aware it's sensible to replace the clutch even though mine has only got like 20k miles on it if that... anything else?

@Carolyn if I stick a deck chair out and provide suitable food and beverages and possibly a loudhailer so you can shout instructions at me, would you like to come and "direct"? :-)

The Other Stu

Congratulations on the job :)
If you're doing the mileage, probably time for a dirty diesel. Give me a shout if you've got something in mind because I've probably driven one  :))

I may at some stage be able to come over and offer brawn and really poor advice if you pencil in some dates.
No Longer Here

jvanzyl

Thanks Stu!

All advice and brawn welcome!

Possibly also someone picking up their wheels as well....;p

Totally taking you up on that Mike! This is gonna be excellent!

OK so the dividing the list into 3 sections, must haves, should haves but it'll be ok without, and nice to haves:

Must haves:

  • Oil
  • Oil filter
  • Gearbox oil (2x MT90)
  • Coolant?
  • New gasket between engine and exhaust manifold

Should haves:

  • New Clutch (current has done less than 20k though)
  • New front radiator (think it's original)

Nice to haves:

  • Lightened flywheel
  • Hamish or better manifold
  • Better Cams
  • Sports Cat
  • ECU Master Standalone and remap

what am I missing?

Sorry mate.  Family arrived from NZ today.  Will be here for the next three weeks.  I know it burns a bit of oil, but, if it  runs OK, may I suggest putting up with it for a little longer?

Fluids:  gearbox oil (enough to replace what you lose) and engine oil and pink coolant (5 ltrs)

No worries Carolyn :-)

Thanks for the list- in terms of timeline it'd likely be the last 2 weeks of August...

But I'd start on what I can as an when time allows, which given my past 6 months is probably about 2 mins and 13 seconds.

Thanks for the advice... There is a point to what you are saying, it's just that this is an opportunity that is unlikely to come round again easily or soon.

Ah, I was lazy and bought the ready mixed stuff...

1979scotte

7 litres of pre mix should do it or as Carolyn say 5 litres of concentrate.
