Urgent.. Airbag light won't turn off
April 08, 2017, 09:59:57 AM »
I've removed my air bag, put a 3.3ohm resistor in the plug but it's not going off.
Help! Got an MOT in half hour!!

Anyone?!
3.3ohm resistor doesn't appear to work. The light still flashes on the dash

If you put the airbag back on, does the light go out? just to prove there's not some other fault.

Has the ECU logged a fault that needs to be cleared?
Would it be a job for your OBD reader?

Yeah, the blokes at work hooked it up to the diagnostics and found a fault that wouldn't clear...or at least it cleared but reappeared as soon as you turn the ignition off and back on

Could it be to do with the resistor? 3.3ohm is what I'm using

I could be wrong but I believe airbag lights (once cycled on, i.e. the car believes the airbag has been deployed) can only be turned off using something like TechStream.

Most cars if air bag has been disconnected will reset when re connected, it will just store the code.
If airbags have been activated then the airbag ecu locks itself.
Even a code reader will not clear that, it needs to be sent of to be reset.
We have a Autel that reads and resets most things.

How might it think the airbag has gone off? Where did I go wrong?

Could I just disconnect the airbag ecu then?

i think the light stays on when disconnected.
Only one way to find out, disconnect battery leave for 10 mins so system discharged, and try it.

I'd disconnected the battery about a month before I pulled the airbag out, then didn't get reconnected for a good week after the new steering wheel and 3.3ohm resistor was fitted

Strange

I still haven't managed to get this sorted.
Hooked the battery back up, having had it disconnected for the past 4+ months, so I could finish my brakes...airbag light is still on!

Has anyone got any suggestions please?

Does the fact the passenger side airbag is still connected have anything to do with it? Imbalance in signal/resistance perhaps?

Might seem like a silly suggestion but is the obd2 reader still plugged in? The one I have makes the airbag light stay on until removed for some reason. Happens on both my Celica and MR2 so figured it was probably a stupid Toyota thing.

Definitely a Techstream jobbie mate. Near D1 Customs in Loughborough by any chance?

Alternatively you could try the ELMScan Toyota app with your OBD2 adapter.
That does most of the things Techstream can do.
Depending on your OBD2 adapter you may be able to connect to the airbag ecu

Right, borrowed a WiFi obd adapter from my brother. Can you get ELMscan as a freebie or you pay £5 on the PlayStore?

I would have thought £5 for a bit of software that can do all that stuff is a  great deal.

Pay for it. it's worth it all day long. The only thing I'll say is that it live/dies on the OBD2 adapter.

My cheap Chinese copy barely connected sporadically and it couldn't connect to the ABS or airbag modules.

So try the freebie first
