MR Roadie 2

Picked up my new MR2 with from 1970Scotte yesterday.

Although the car is new to myself, I am aware that this car is well known to the forum. So most people will know the car is a quick car.  s:D :D s:D

Firstly, meeting and dealing with Scott during the purchase of the car was a honour. Scott has been nothing but up front about the car and has informed my of all good things about the car and the works he has carried out on the car. He was also upfront about any issues with the car, like the crack on the wind screen and manifold issue which both happenED during the Highland Drive.
From meeting Scott and from posts I have read on the forum I can fully understand why he is the winner of the Perry Byrnes Memorial trophy for 2016. A very helpful guy.

The Car
I got to give the car a good run for Edinburgh through to Ayrshire which a mixer of roads. This gave me a good chance to get understand the car and use the 3 map set points.
Yes 3 map set point. Set point 1. Gives the car some good boost that is easy to control (when on dry roads), I am guessing about 190 BHP.
Set point 2. Gives the car more boost and the car starts pull a lot harder. This starts to become very quick at this set point. I was enjoying the car some much at set point 2 that I had forgot there was more power to be released. Guessing the car is at 210BHP.
Set point 3. This will not be used when my children are in the car, as sweary words were slipping out my mouth as the car threw me into the seat while accelerating down the road. The car is at 230BHP.

The car has been set up very well by Scott and is very smooth to drive.
From my experience of these cars I think when using coilovers it would be best to AD08R tyres. I say this, as I have now be in PhilMc 2zz with BC coilover and AD08r on a track day and found the car to be very smooth. Although this was track conditions.
My new car has the Meister- R coilovers and AD08r and I have my original 1zz with Yellowspeed coilovers and Hankook Ventus Prime2 tyres.
The Hankook tyres I think are the big difference on the set ups. The Hankook tyres are 20mm narrower at each corner, they do have great grip, however the tyre walls are very soft, as witnessed by Scott and Phil. Most likely too soft to work the stiff coilover correctly.
There is only one solution! Swap the wheels over on both car and lets see how good the yellowspeeds are.
My Hankooks are still good tyres, but I think they would be preferred to a car with standard suspension.
The brakes (hel lines, Yellowstuff pads and disks drill and grooved) are slightly better than mine (goodridge lines, Green stuff and standard disks) when warmed up and the same when cold.

Plans for the car.
Firstly the car is going to get a service, as I like a good starting point.
My intension is then to make the car look like my current car. As I really like the look of my current car, I just wished it had some more power  s:( :( s:(  . I was originally planning to turbo my before a change of plan and buying Scott's car.
This means I will be swapping the interior, day time running / fog lights, fitting new side skirt, fit a new spoiler, front and rear spats. I have also spoke to my local custom exhaust guy with the intensions either swapping the exhausts or fitting a new back box to give the car quad tips.
Suspension? maybe swapped over depending on test drives with the wheel changed over and extra costs for my mate to change them.
Frenzy bar to be fitted.
Change head unit, speakers and fit my under dash subwoofer.
Hopefully next year a drive to Swansea for a red mohair roof.

Negatives about the car.
The clutch is heavy. This is will due to the car having a sports clutch and the spring in the clutch being stiffer. I think   s:?: :?: s:?:
The gear box is not a smooth as my PLF 5 speed.
The dash appears the have more rattling noises them mine. Although I did manage to fix the rattles in my dash so I am no concerned about this.
The car wasn't vacuumed before collection   s:lol:  s:lol:  . Although Scott manage to get the car washed before I arrived. I did ask him if he had found time to clay bar the bodywork, what polish and wax he had used on the car, but his silence said it all to me.

Positives about the car
All the performance I was looking for and the handling, plus its an 06.

So far my mechanic and my neighbour have both had a shot of this car (both have faster cars in their garages) and both loved the performance and the handling of this turbo'd 2.

All said I am very happy with my new car and I am looking forward to many miles of motoring with this car.

I wish Scott the best of luck with his new BEE6.

It's mental on full boost isn't it?  s:) :) s:)  I wish Helen's had the map selector as the full whack is a bit of handful and can be down-right scary on b-roads.

Enjoy!

The car sounds awesome Grant, glad you're pleased with it so far.

Kames track day this Sunday, are you coming along with it to say hello? Mark Scouler will be there with his Sprint prepped turbo 1zz as well   s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:  .

s:cry:  s:cry:   Can't make it. Got my weekends mixed up and forgot this weekend is the bank holiday Monday. So I'm away. Next time hopefully.

Dropped into to DT Tune to speak to Chris and drop off bigger injectors for Mark. This is where Mark Scoular gets his car tuned. We did a wee comparison on the Dyno readings going by the graph and the print out I have for my car. As Chris measures the car at the hubs and my dyno run was measured at the fly wheel and would think Marks car will be about 15 bhp up on my car. As Mark races his car I think he needs the extra BHP   s:wink:  s:wink:  .
Chris can't tune a unichip ECU so I think I might need to go to SOS Motorsport at Falkirk to double check what power I am running   s:twisted:  s:twisted:  .

S12vea, I have a funny feeling you know how this turbo kit runs.   s:wink:  s:wink:

However you are right.
When my neighbour was out driving it yesterday I had it in map1. He thought the car was great and had plenty pull. I then changed it the map3   s:twisted:  s:twisted:  and he could not believe the difference on the power delivery.

I honestly think that with new plugs new oil fixed manifold and maybe a new air filter she will feel even quicker.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

That's a shame bud, would be a good opportunity for you to make direct comparisons.

I'll quite possibly be going down to Kames again for the track evening on Thursday 4th May if you're up for it........and a bargain at a tenner for 5-9pm   s8) 8) s8)  .

Seats and door cards changed with some extra sound proof below the carpet.

Got a plan in place between the garage, the bodywork shop and the exhaust specialist.

Hopefully come Ding Day I will be sitting smoking a big cigar with saying "I love it when a plan comes together!"  s:D :D s:D

Who do you go to for your paintwork?

I'm considering work from part respray to full respray with colour change & getting really very varied quotations. Might travel south to Ayrshire if it means I can get a better deal than in Glasgow.

Spats and side skirts are currently being painted.
The car is going in for a service tomorrow, then sent to the body work shop for parts to be fitted and bonnet to be painted.
I have final changed over my seat, door cards and steering wheel.

Had a look at the rear light, as my lights have bad condensation. On removal of the lights I had lots of water pouring out the light units   s:lol:  s:lol:  . Easy fix as this will not be the first time I have had to stop condensation from within  rear lights.

Firstly dry out the fittings. I have two methods for this. First method, leave the car in the sun on a warm day with the sun shining on the rear lights and with bulbs removed from the light fitting.
Second method, remove the light fitting from the car. Take the bulbs out from the fitting and leave the lights in the house (preferable a hot air cupboard) until the light are dry inside each fitting.
Then run a bead of clear silicone round the seal of the light. I believe this is where the water is getting in my fittings as some of the clips on the lens are broken.
Then refit lights.

Simples!!!  s:D :D s:D

After 2 months I have my turbo'd 2 back on the road.  s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:

Before I but my car in for a service, G (my good mate and great mechanic) comment to me about the some smoke coming out the exhaust when I drove by his garage. A few our guys and myself who had driven the car, including one of G's mechanic's have never seen smoke coming out the exhaust.

So during the service there was a small drop of oil that had leaked out the turbo (very minor). G insisted that the turbo was to be sent away for a service and to have the seals checked. I sent the turbo to Glasgow turbo specialist and all appeared okay with the turbo. The guy carried out a service on the turbo and fitted new bearing and balanced the turbo.

Once the turbo was returned to G's garage they got round to fitting the turbo (during there hectic schedule).
The car oil was filled to the high line of the dip stick before starting the car. The oil poured out the turbo seals and smoke filled the garage   s:cry:  s:cry:  .
The turbo was removed AGAIN! and sent back the turbo specialist for inspection as the oil leakage was worse than before. Once again the turbo was return to the garage with no issues found by the specialist.
G insisted that the turbo got sent to another specialist for a second opinion. Once again the turbo was sent off and returned with no issues.

At this point we started at the oil feed and return lines with a oil pressure check, both lines were ok.
So we took the sump of the car and started to measure the oil volume within the sump. The oil return line is at it's highest point on the sump, however when G started measuring the oil volume of the sump he found that at the low level of the dip stick the oil sat below oil return line, when the oil level is half way up the dipstick the oil level starts the to cover some of the return line feed and when at the high level of the dip stick the oil level also covers the return feed.

When I handed my car in for its service the car oil level was in the middle of the dip stick, this meant with the oil warmed up and swishing in the sump as I went round corners or at roundabouts the oil level would cover the return line into the sump and cause a back pressure on the turbo causing it to leak at the seals. This is most likely why G saw the smoke.
This is also why it leaked so badly when the turbo got fitted and the oil level was filled to the top of the dip stick.
As extract precaution he manage to slightly bore out the return oil line as it enters the sump.

I am running the car just above the low level of the dip stick with no issue, I also now running oil that G uses in his clients rally cars, under G's instruction.
Who I am to question what oil we use, after all G was the only guy to notice that the turbo passing oil before he got it on the ramps and he would not let me get my car until he had all the answers and the answers he did find.
He also found a 5mm diameter hole on the air pipe from the turbo to the air intake manifold due to the pipe touching the drive shaft.

So after a couple of months of frustration waiting for my car to be returned my car is running sweet!   s:D :D s:D   and just for fun I tried a we 0-60 app on my phone where the car came in at 4.97 seconds, that'll do me!   s:twisted:  s:twisted:

Hopefully now I can move on to other works I want to carry out on my car.

Most importantly, cheers G!   s:bowdown:  s:bowdown:   I am so glad to have you in my corner.

Has any other turbo'd owners had this issue?  s:?: :?: s:?:

So glad you've got it sorted.
For sure the guy must be an ace mechanic.
Can't believe it had a hole in the boost pipe.
That's the second time that has happened it was adjusted obviously not enough.
The kit was installed by Matt Performance so know clues why the oil return is too low.
He should know the kit better than anyone.

It's just the location of the boost pipe. The boost pipe was resting and rubbing against drive shaft. Without pulling the boost pipe away from the shaft we would have not noticed the hole in the pipe as the shaft was sitting into the hole and therefore filling and covering the hole. I can't say that have noticed any improvement with the boost now that the hole has been fixed, I am guessing there was very little boost leakage.

She always held 10 ish psi of boost when I had my gauges hooked up so you are probably right.

It's got a better power to weight ratio then a VX220 turbo so I would say so.

After weeks of watching my car on the driveway due to work and busy weekends, I finally got this car back out tonight, much to my delight.
I forgot how fast this car is!  s:twisted:  s:twisted:    s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:

Hopefully I'll get the car back out this weekend for more miles of smiles.

Then I might start looking at getting some mods from my out car moved over to this car.
