lowering springs on standard shocks

if I lower the car say 30mm but use standard shocks, is this an issue ??

Thats what toyota did with the TTE lowering springs so shouldnt be an issue.

I have heard it said it lowers the life of the shock but dont know if thats true or not.

I'm running tein S springs and kyb shocks. no issues.

From personal experience, the Eibach springs are too hard for the standard shocks - all spring & no damping.

Patsy has had both the Vogtland and Tein springs on her cars & I found them both well matched to the stock struts (both 30mm lower).
Former owner 2003, 2zz conversion.

You can do, however worth noting that the rear shocks on my car with the Tein lowering springs are failing - you can run them ok but be aware that they push the stock dampers slightly harder than normal so are a wear item - other option is to go to TCB and get some coilovers  s:D :D s:D

Lowering the car on Tein springs was one of the first mods I did to the car. Ran for nearly 3 years with them and standard shocks, no issues apart from been 30mm lower you need to adopt new tactics with speed bumps  s:wink: :wink: s:wink:  
As Scott said, then moved on the coilovers and other suspension changes.
TF 160 TTE exhaust and style bar and other shiny bits.
Replaced by an Abarth 124 Spider

Pinching this post after a search on springs and looking for some answers   s:) :) s:)  Two of the advisories on my recent MOT were
Coil spring corroded nearside and offside front, I am assuming I will need to replace before next MOT.
Haven't thought about lowering the car before, how hard is this to do and what sort of cost will I be looking at?

Jvanzyl has offered to help me   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:  Can I add to my to do list for next year   s:scared: :scared: s:scared:  

Another advisory was Corrosion on all suspension components, currently waiting for a quote from these people

Thinking around £350 will be cheaper than replacing all the parts

Set of Tein S springs £120 ish. Difficulty level. No more difficult than changing for a standard spring.
If you are doing your own spannering not so much of an issue. But if paying someone else.
You might want to consider repalcing the shocks at the same time or you will be paying twice the same work.

I along with a friend this job recently and used new KYB shocks and Tien springs, it was straightforward, but  you will need to factor in a couple of new droplinks, and I suspect the gaiters will be knackered so they will need replaced as well. My view was that I was taking it all apart and the car would feel tighter and handle better with a suspension refresh, so changed the shocks to. I appreciate that if funds dont allow then changing the springs is fine, but do factor in the other parts as its unlikely that you will not need to replace them.

Kyb and tein s is the route i went.
Are coilys better for handling. Probably yes.
Are coilys bettet for comfort. Probably not.
Stock shock and tein s, provide more capability than my talent will require.

Just what I needed to hear Ardent   s:) :) s:)  
As cash is, as always at a premium. The cheaper route is to go with stock shocks and aftermarket springs until the shocks give out   s:| :| s:|

Not wanting to pi55 in your chips, but you may find your shocks are already long past their best.
It's not until you fit fresh do you truly realise.
As you qute rightly say it comes down to timing and £££s.
I still say its better to pay once than twice.

I would also agree with changing the shocks too, they are the thing that will make the most difference.

If it is a cost issue, I would take the wheels off, wire brush them thoroughly, degrease the springs and then paint the springs with smooth hammerite using a thin brush. That should get it through another MOT and gives you more time to save up for the shocks!

If you are past 50k miles then get the shocks changed.
That's what a lot of manufacturers advise.
I wouldn't bothered too much on a family wagon if it passed the MOT but on a sports car who's handling is it's best attribute it's a must imho.
