JOBD Fail (again).

So, three dongles later and two lots of software (torque Pro and ELMScan Toyota), and an extra line of code, I still can't get into my ECU via my phone.

For those who don't read headers - it's a JOBD car.

My phone is an old Galaxy S3 (which I understand has been known to be occasionally dodgy on the bluetooth front)...

I have a new dongle that claims to do JOBD, I can get two of the dongles to pair.  I cannot get the phone to 'connect to ECU'.  When I turn the car on the abs warning light flashes with the dongle in place...  I have no idea if this is normal...

My steam-driven JOBD code reader does work....(no flashing ABS light when it's plugged in.)

I'm asking for input from those whose knowledge level exceeds guesswork, or 'a buddy told me perhaps'....

Played with it some more.  I got some sort of partial connection, but no data.  When I unplugged the dongle, my power steering had quit.  A quick ECU rest restored the steering.  A bit worrying when connecting a dongle can do that.  The dongle in question claims to do JOBD .
This is the dongle in question:  m https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Autool-C1-V1 ... 2749.l2649 m

Its normal for ABS to flash with dongle plugged in.
Might be an idea to try connected to the Euro car first to make sure dongle and phone and app all talk nicely, then it'll be just a matter of configuring torque pro right for JOBD. Maybe [emoji3]

ah, thanks for the ABS bit!
Other advice already followed.  All good on Euro car.

further edit:

I'm bloody useless at all this phone/dongle stuff..... probably need hands-on assistance.  Having manged to screw with my power steering function (no idea how) I am probably best advised to appeal for assistance from one of you digital whizzes.

I can bring the car to you??  It's not that I NEED it, I just want to see all the groovy stuff working!!!

Just a thought, definitely not a definitive answer, but is Torque and ELMScan supported on your version of Android? The Galaxy S3 is quite an old phone now - new versions of apps will often no longer work on older versions of Android

Can you check the android version? Should be in 'Settings' and an option something like 'About Phone', 'Software Version'. It should be easy for anyone to check in the app to see compatibility then

Justin:  you're probably right about my phone.  I hate mobile phones, so I'm a total Luddite in that department.

Jon:  Yes please, at your convenience, Sir.

Probably not meant to mention, but I got a chinese cable on ebay that came with a little techstream disk. To get it to read my JOBD ECU I had to change location to Japan.

So maybe buy a JOBD reader from Japan?

Would that not read in Japanese?  Perhaps not....

No, it read in English..

From an older post of mine elsewhere - "Finally got Techstream to talk to the 89666-20060 JDM Celica ECU properly by entering Japan as location and allowing automatic detection. It came up as "ZZT_Celica_CURREN_2ZZ-GE" and said no faults."

I read on a nissan forum that they used an obdmate om500 to read Jap import 350 and 370.
That doesn't help much with Torque admittedly.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Jonbill has just left the premises.  He played with this, fiddled with that...

I can now get Torque to work on my JDM car.  Thank you Jon!!  As the car is running perfectly, I have no need of it, but it's fum to see all the dials turning.

No go with ELM scan, though.

Now I owe him some workshop time.  Fair deal!

Yay! All I did really is put that initialisation string in again. I think it must be fussy about extra spaces and line feeds.
And got a free nose around the Rushden Alladin's case. There's always more to see [emoji3]

Hello Carolyn

I'm trying to figure out again how to get my Torque app connected to my  JDM ECU. It worked years ago but phone's changed app refreshed etc and I've lost the code.

Can you tell me if yours is still working and how? Did you get settings in the vehicle profile under very Advanced - EML327 custom string?

Thanks

Cheers
