Wheels seized, gearbox failure?

Hi everyone,
well after 4 years of relatively trouble free motoring, just the odd handbrake and o2 sensor issues, she finally gave up last night. Driving home from work, turned right in second gear went to accelerate up the hill and came to a shuddering halt. Rear wheels completely seized and gearbox stuck in second gear. Wasn't fun that's for sure.
car is home now, just need to get it on the drive. Will probably get some wheel dollies rather than try the more imaginative suggestions offered on the FB page.  s:D :D s:D
After that I suppose it's gearbox and clutch out, anyone have any links on a how to for the removal?

That's a pretty big deal.
Did you need a new pair of pants?
Glad you're ok.
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Haha, yeah I'm good thanks. Was only going slow & sensible so it wasn't too big a deal. It's only when you think about the fact you were  doing 70 along a dual carriage way 5 minutes earlier that things get a bit scary.

That happened to a work colleague in the 60' s, drained the motor bike ( gear box) oil, took it out for a " test run" on the local dual carriageway ( Chertsey by pass) changed into top and thought " new oil?". He was hospitalised but lived to walk and tell the tale.

I had a rather similar experience 20 odd years ago on a Ducati,  Alternator changed at dealer service, 2 days later on the M1 the new alternator fell off and jammed the crank. Apparently completely coincidental.   s:shock:  s:shock:

When box was removed and stripped, 2nd motion shaft bearing had failed.

Yeah mine started to whine on and off after some frisky driving when we went to the Ring.
Lasted about 3k more before locking up, seconds before whined like mad then some poo came out as i was on fast left hand bend.  s:lol:  s:lol:
Oh did change oil when back from Germany it had a burnt smell and was black, was changed only the year before that with MT90.

Scary stuff, not really what you want on a fast left hander. Or any bend for that matter.

Well the car has gone in, didn't fancy doing it myself. New clutch to be fitted and a replacement gearbox. Fingers crossed that's all it is.
Managed to free it up and get it out of gear by rocking backwards and forwards, didn't sound great when it pulled on to the recovery truck though.

So now I've found your thread :-) was just wondering how many miles on your car and any gbox oil changes to your knowledge?

95k miles with full service history. I changed the gearbox oil for MT90 at about 80k

Sounds slightly unlucky - my sister's 2 is on 105k and pretty sure original box and oil (just told her to get the gbox oil done at next service).

Still here's to the next 95k  :)

Got the car back today and it's purring like a kitten  :)
Old gearbox still had oil in it so must've just been an internal failure. It had been wearing for a while if the lack of noise coming from the back now is anything to go by. Fingers crossed the replacement will last me a bit longer.

Good news :)  that sounded like a pretty horrific type of failure

Perhaps crack the box open and see what its like? You can then pull out the LSD and sell it on to recoup some costs!
