Advice on wheels and tyre sizes

Hi all,

I am just looking at options for wheels and tyres, my project car will be running *tad* more power than stock, currently running 215mm rear tyres on the stock 16" rims at the moment but I am ideally looking for a square setup - ideally 15s all round.

I basically need to find a wheel and tyre combo that will give me enough grip on the rear for higher power but also still work with the stock tyre sizes. I am just checking to see if I am able to adjust the speedo via my Link Xtreme ECU so I can adjust the speedo read out to correct for a non standard wheel and tyre.

I really don't want to go with 17s but have a feeling I might need to so that I can get the width, no reason to run with 16s as sizes aren't as common - although I believe you can run a 225/40/16 tyre on the stock 16" wheels.

So far I have recommended running 15x8 rims as there should be a good choice of 15" tyres out there but not sure if there is a good width choice out there without going for a 17".

Advice greatly appreciated

It would seem that I am able to adjust the speedo to correct for a different wheel and tyre combo - it does open up the possible options a bit but looking at places like Camskill there aren't really any off the shelf wider 15" tyres. Will check demon tweaks etc to get an idea of other sizes and costs.

Not sure why 16s seems a problem.
Plenty choice. Certainly more than 17s. That was one of the biggest issues for 17s we found. When we looked we had the realistic choice of about 3 non-track tyres. And with one of these the sizes were less than optimal, leading to scraping.

Stock 16s run 225/40 absolutely fine. And 205 would suit front 16s very well making for a more square setup while maintaining factory stagger.

If you want width and wider wheel base, choose a low ET and roll the arches.
What are you trying to achieve? Cornering ability or something to cope with 400+ hp?

Personally I think larger wheels change the feel of the car as does going for very wide tyres.
205 front and 225 rear are the largest I have used and I wasn't too happy with the front.
You may feel differently.
I know ChrisGB has stock FL wheels with R888 on his 2gr and it's easy to light the wheels up but I believe he is happy enough on track.
His car puts down somewhere in the region of 360bhp.

On a different note have they recently improved the Link ECU?
I know people who kept the stock 1zz ECU to run the dash properly as the storm wouldn't do it.

As a side note... 225/40/16 on ET35 7.5 alloys holds 235ish hp all day long without even as much as a tyre spin at launch so even at 350hp+ you'd be hard pressed to really NEED anything wider.

The 1mz probably makes as much if not more torque than Helens turbo and I don't have any problems in the dry on PFL 205 rears.
AD08R obviously. Sticky tyres are the key.

I am still looking at options, I have found that even if I did look at 15s, wide tyre choices still aren't that good, I am looking to run a square setup rather than 15/16, not sure why I didn't upgrade to 225/40/16s on the rear when I had a chance, guess I could always run a different set of wheels and tyres depending on what I am planning.

I won't be running full boost day to day, so I guess I could run the stock wheels, I can then bolt on road legal sticker tyres on slightly wider rims for track days/Santa Pod where I would be running higher power - not planning to run any drag slicks at Santapod but perhaps some slightly sticker track day tyres.

Perhaps I could look to run all 4 wheels using the stock face lift rear 16" rims?

Note on the ECU - my plug and play loom has arrived, its a piggyback style which retains the stock ECU for some features - can still look to run a separate Link dash if needed in the future.

Thanks for the update on the loom, very helpful. That's for a Link G4 ECU isn't it?

Also, how do you adjust the speedo please?

Its a G4+ Xtreme ECU that is going in, here is the thread on the Link ECU forum:

http://forums.linkecu.com/topic/8099-can-i-adjust-speedo/

Basically you should be able to either offset the speedo or change it by a percentage.
