Hi, before I order one I thought I'd check first with you guys and do you have any recommendations on supplier and price?   Yep it's that Yorkshire " thing" again 😄
Looks nasty to me 😟You cannot view this attachment.

Gaz mr-s

If it works ok clean it up & protect it.  Toyota ones are the best quality, but expensive.  If you don't like the price TCB do a pattern one.  Facebook messenger is probably best contact method.

Looks a hell of a lot better than mine on Mr Poo! As above, if no play clean up and protect with thick grease or a boot.

Mr2paul

Thx, I'll take that advise then. Can't see any play as such but when wheel is turned I could feel the faintest of clicks, but that could come from anywhere. Thx for your inputs, I will clean up, degrease and regressed hopefully with some type of boot. 👍

Ignore my last comment. After a wire brush it does show some play that I didn't see before so I'll change it. Thanks.

Why are you wire brushing at 6 o'clock on a Saturday night?

Its most certainly drink o'clock.

Mr Lazy

Coincidentally, I've just been trying to replace mine and I could do with some advice. I was going to start a new thread, but then I saw this one and thought it would be more useful to post here instead.

I've got the old UJ off. It actually seems to move nice and smoothly, so perhaps my creaky steering is due to something else. Oh well, I've passed the point of no return and have a new one in my hand (so to speak) so I may as well fit it.

The trouble is that I can't get it to fit into the UJ fitting below the steering column, which should be the easiest bit of the whole job. The UJ I'm fitting in is new (a TCB part) and the part I'm fitting it to is inside the car and therefore completely free from any corrosion or dirt. I therefore thought it would just slide on, but it doesn't. I tried opening the slot with a screwdriver but it was too stiff to move. I had also contorted myself so that I was upside down with my head in the footwell and my legs sticking out the top of the car (no photos, sorry!) so everything was quite awkward. Does anyone have any tips? I'm out of ideas.

Joesson

@Mr Lazy,
Never having fitted this item I can only generalise. When I looked at mine I thought the hard part would be getting  the old one off and having examined the inside gaiter, which needs replacing, I can empathise with your contortions  necessary to get at that area.
I suggest that you are part way there with "opening the slot with a screwdriver", I would try just a light tap on the screw driver to wedge it into the slot at the bottom of the slot and open it up and leave it wedged as you start it onto the column end.

Mr Lazy

Thanks @Topdownman. I had read the how to beforehand, as well as viewing a useful Youtube video. Nothing much is mentioned of this though, as if it is so straightforward that it doesn't need mentioning.

@Joesson, I think the slot is too wide to wedge it in, but I'll go and take another look, thank you.

I can't recall the width of the slot but if your available screwdriver blade, a stubby would perhaps be best, is too thin a washer or a low value coin could be used to thicken it up.

Mr2paul

I assume the new one is correct, have you compared to the old ?
You no that it can only fit in one way with the column ? Apart from that iv no idea. Did the old one come out ok ? Check the new one closely for machining faults ???

Mr Lazy

It's very strange. I had another go earlier but I've given up for now. Comparing the two, the new one is painted black (which could be adding to the problem) and it doesn't have the filled in splined sections, so it could be positioned incorrectly and still go in. However, the old one, which slid out easily, was also impossible to get back in when I tried to fit it as a comparison. Since then, I have tried to prise the clamp apart further using a screwdriver with another one through the hole in the handle to give me more leverage. I could actually see the clamp prising apart slightly, bit the shaft still wouldn't go in. I don't swear online, but lets just say it's starting to annoy me.

I feel your pain, replacing mine was also quite an ordeal. Anyway if you're interested in protecting your replacement steering joint, I make dust boot kits for those:

;D Slightly shameless, but I don't blame you. I'll leave it for now thanks.

Mr2paul

Hi, did you fit the joint ok ? I've just done mine, taking off was a pain but new one went on fine after a bit of prep. I can post my own experience doing this tho maybe long winded so won't unless you need some help.
