Title: Kit spotted on ebay, anyone got one?
Post by: Anonymous on March 9, 2008, 18:21
Anyone dealt with this company as I'm thinking of buying the "sporty" spoiler.

 m http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... =p3907.m29 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=310030190926&Category=72207&_trksid=p3907.m29) m

Heres the bodykit they offer:

And the spoiler I may get:

I prefer the GT spoiler...like the way it overhangs the lights. Not seen anything like that before.
Agree with all else tho...but i'm still looking for a 'sniper' bodykit, I like the flared wheel arches that come with the full kit   s:) :) s:)

i like that kit as well, not the spoiler, cant help thinking the rest of it would look good with the TRC rear end that Nige has got.

I like that, am i right in thinking that both bumpers simply bolt on and replace the orignals?
So its a case of getting it painted then fit yourself?

I'd hazard a guess that like rather a lot of fibreglass kits it will require quite a bit of fettling and adjusting before it fits 'right' - so best to get the whole thing fitted by a bodyshop unless you're happy with doing the fitment & prep work first yourself..

Ihave emailed jdl, had a reply from Dan, he is quoting £260 painted and £50 delivery, 3 week turnaround, i have asked if he will do a discount for say 5 kits if we get interest.
He has a link nowe to this thread.

I'd probably go for the kit without the spoiler (already have the ducktail one to go on).

I really need to find out if I can spray  s;) ;) s;)

Post by: loadswine on March 9, 2008, 21:36
That front bumper looks great but will collide with so may things at that clearance above thee ground. I know, as mine is similar in that respect and its often taking hits from the ground. Level crossings, (hardly ever level)  s:lol:  s:lol:  can cause grief particularly.
Title:
Post by: Jaik on March 9, 2008, 22:09
I think the half-decent photography and paint job helps it to look good. The front and sides I could take or leave, but that rear would look more at home on a Corsa in a McDonald's carpark IMHO.

Don't the low slung bodykits on the front, sides and rear catch on speedbumps?

From personal experience, i've seen Impreza's tackle speedbumps at the appropriate speed 10-15MPH and still lose their bodykit or at least scratch or crush it, likewise with a few of those Chav-mobiles.  What's the difference with the MR2 kits ?   s:? :? s:?

I don't actually think the rear is too bad....only thing that lets it down for me are the vents behind the rear arches. Otherwise I don´t think it is too bad..the spoiler would be ok if it didnt hang as far back - sadly its like an ironing board at that length!!

£624 is really good for a genuine TRD spoiler. I was looking for one a while back and they are rare as hen's teeth and those I found were more expensive than that. I even nearly bought a whole car just to take the spoiler off then sell the car.

That sort of money gets you a hardtop with fitting kit, total no brainer.

Yup, I bought a turbo, total no brainer.

Just to keep it on topic I nearly bought that ebay kit today but there's a few other bits and bobs I need to sort out first before going for something like that. I did order some AEM gauges from the States instead tho.

The car in the pics is lowered 55mm AND has a carbon front splitter on. On most cars the kit isn't going to be that close to the ground and all the speedbumps.

Look, I'm convincing myself to buy this kit...Nooooooooo!

Damn, I thought the black front splitter part was part of the kit..

I actually really quite like it - including the rear bumper.

More like GroundThumper, either the Kit falling off after going over the mountain range of speedbumps around here, or me punching the floor shortly after losing my front end.

I talked to the Rep from Imexdesigns and he says that since this kit is still rather new he does not stock it yet. Regarding the fitment and quality of TDL kits in general he said he's sold kits for Vauxhall, Subaru, other Toyotas etc, and has not recieved a complaint about front or rear bumper fitment or quality. Sideskirts and lip kits, however, have had fitment issues. Not major issues, but he has had complaints. As far as my research goes, I don't think there is a Spyder kit in England yet. Any members on here in Poland, Germany, or Malta care to go have a look at one?

If I can work out a good deal on shipping I may guinea pig my Spyder for a test fit.

Steve

JDL got back in touch...

------------------

Hi,

I will try to do my best with all your quesition.

1. 185x35x50 [ cm ]

2. I can say only if car is extremaly lowered. There is 12 cm clearence  between  diffuser  and ground. If car is not lowered, there is still huge clearence. No worries with speed bumps

3. No, we sell only unpainted.

4. Quite easy to fit. We have a few customers who  never fitted bodykit before, and they have already fitted. However basic skills of fitter are required

5. Bodykit comes insured for full amount. If something comes broken, replecement is sent within 2 working days since customer report.
Regarding fitting. This bodykit was fitted by a few customers before, so we are 100% sure everything fit properly. We sent 10 days ago this bodykit to TUV engineers. It is already approved and tested - construction, quality and fitting. Certificate will be sent to us within couple of weeks. It is best recommendation.

If you have any questions feel free to ask

Daniel

JDL

QuoteHi there,

I am interested in the eBay Toyota MR2 Bodykit which you sell/supply.
I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind answering, i'd be most appreciative.

    1. If at all possible, could you supply me the dimensions in cm or mm of the front bumper?

    2. What is the ground clearance between the front bumper and the ground on a standard MR2 (not lowered suspension)?

    3. Is it possible for you to spray the bodykit before sending it?

    4. Is it simple to fit?

    5. What sort of guarantee do you supply (if the kit is damaged during transit, or won't fit on the car due to a poor cast etc)?

    Many thanks,

    Matt Hunter

Those are obviously not stock wheels - any guesses what that car has on it - probably got wrong sized tyres on though  s:wink:  s:wink:   - imagine the kit with a set of stockers - would look poo - especially if not lowered - so you would have to add that into the cost.

Hold up, after my brief check of them yesterday I took them out to my car today, and noticed that the FRP has bubbled (read: weakened) and has also cracked.  Further to this, the vents are asymmetrical and I don't believe they actually fit in the vent spacing at all.

The plastic coating is chipped and has a poor finish.

Sorry about the delay in posting this, but I didn't have time to check them over yesterday after my initial euphoria.

I've asked them for a full refund, so i'll see how it goes.

Oh well the hunt continues.................back to the DAMD kit then.

It is a shame, i'm sure it's hard looking for a living in Poland and they probably are produced the best that they can feasibly manage, but unfortunately its not upto our factory process standards.

He offered me a replacement set to be sent out, but frankly, i'd much prefer the refund - he hasn't replied after I rejected his replacement offer.

I was reading the feedback JDL had on Ebay.

There were some ebayers that claimed that the products the bought were not ready to fit and they needed trimming etc.

Someone else claimed, that when he went to the body shop to have the product painted, the body shop refused to paint it cause of the extreme poor quality.

So I guess the quality standard of JDL are lower than what we are used to.
But to be honest, I love this kit and even more the price of it!

I dont want something though that can crack in a week time on the first bumper.

I received a response today saying only 'OK no probs' to my request to return it for a refund.

I had to tell a white lie to get a response, by saying that i'd consider purchasing their bodykit later on if they handled this correctly.

Now we get to see how honest they are... International Signed For.

The kit arrived a while back, but I have been working in Africa for the past few weeks so havent had a chance to give it a proper lookin over. At a quick glance it doesnt seem too bad, but will probablyneed a litle 'finishing' off in places, but a decent bodyshop/paint shop should have no probs in that. I will take some photys over the weekend showing how it is before spraying (god knows when I'll get time to sort that tho...lol).
It was supposed to come with the grill meshing, but that doesnt seem to be here, but as I wanted to put my own blue mesh on I'm not that bothered about it...but beware if you need it!!

I ordered my kit last week so hopefully it will arrive soon. Hopefully i'll finish repainting the kit thats been sitting on my skyline before it arrives otherwise i'll get side tracked...again....

thb, it looks like a pretty good kit, prob only a slight amount of trimming as with most aftermarket kits, but construction and quality from those pics looks good to me.

Just an update : recieved the kit and have inspected all the parts. everything comes in shiny gelcoar so is quite hard to see any imperfections. The side skirts and rear bumper are near perfect as far as surface is concerned - just rough down and primer and ya ready to paint. The front bumper however was totally different. there were pits and large smooth craters on the top edge in the middle. very hard to see but I could just about see it. on inspection there were several more areas which all in all took me about a day (between other chores) to prime/fill/sand/fill....etc... until I was happy that it was not smooth, and correctly contoured. I'm unsure how they could have manufactured the front so poorly tbh, but for me it's not too much of a problem. but be aware with the quality of the product...careful prep is essential!

Do the JDL side skirts go lower than the boot of the car?
In other words, will MRT be able to put the car on the wrecker ?

Does anyone know ?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on May 13, 2008, 21:31
I haven't properly lined the skirts up yet as the original skirts prevent setting them in place but they dont appear to be much lower than the original skirts.
Title: Re: Kit spotted on ebay, anyone got one?
Post by: Anonymous on June 30, 2008, 12:37
I ordered and received the side skirts.

Bad things first!
I have not installed them yet, because it's not easy for DIY.
The reason is that is need proffesional painting, as the surface has a lot of dumps.
Therefore it needs stucco and then painting.

It will not fit either on the car, it has some slots that do not look good.
You also have to make all holes/drill.
Therefore a proffesional is the best to install them.

Finally, the quality of them is very medium.
Ok it's not the worst, but some proffesional I had them shown, told me that there is no elasticity at all, and very easy they will get cracked.

Good news now!
Cheap compared to other kits
VERY VERY beatifull, it is really much more beautifull than photos.
JDL seems a reliable e-shop, as everything on the procedure was perfect.
The side skirts, do not go lower than the car, therefore is it difficult to get them cracked. I'll know for sure when installed though!

OK...Back in the country now, so getting the kit and spoiler fitted next week.
Theres a very good bodyshop down the road from me who said they would spray and fit the kit to a 'show' standard for £700 or just a standard fitting for £600.
Of course i'm going for the show standard even tho I think the price is a little steep, but I dont mind paying for good workmanship.
They reckon it will take about 1 week to fit and spray as they fit the kit and prep it on the car, then take it off to spray, then re-fit and finish off.
I will post up some piccys when all finished (I'm hoping it will be ready for the Santa Pod show on the 2/3rd August).

Cheers,
Mel

OK...Dropped the car off yesterday for fitting. Thought I would just 'inquire' as to how much a full respray would be as I have a few sone chips and.......
For the princely sum of £1600.00 I am now having the bodykit and spoiler fitted and a full respray to another colour.    s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:  ...I'll keep you all guessing as to the colour till I get it back in a couple of weeks (and no...its not pink!   s:lol:  s:lol:  ) ....Pics will follow when I get back from yet another business trip abroad.

Blimey, how much filler stop on your bonnet? You must have had a LOT of stone chips!

Looking forward to seeing it painted. Are you staying the same colour? Im interested as its the same colour as mine, so would love to see it in the blue! Guess your changing though judging by the lengths you are going to on the prep of the respray.

Spook,  nice pictures, buddy. Have to admit, the kit does look quite different when its not on the show vehicle. Looks like a great job though, very sleek. Quite kind Veilside-esque (not the Veilside MR2 kits, but their older style kits for Supras, FD3s etc).

I have to agree. When I get this kit (I'll be organising an international GB as soon as get all the details hammered out) I'll have to change my cay from the fastesr color (black) to the 2nd fastest color (silver). I've just seen some pics of this kit done in red and that looks very nice as well.
One thing that I've noticed, and tell me if this isn't a problem ,is the low clearance at the front. Speed humps in our roads might be a bit of a hazard with this kit, or maybe that's just the way it appears in the pics I've seen.

Def looks that way to me too.

I'll have to agree with nelix here on the front and back. The back I didn't like even on the silver car, and imho from the angle of the first photo it looks like ur 2 has smashed in to a wall and squished, like when a cartoon character gets hit by a frying pan and has a flat face  s:lol:  s:lol:  On the plus side, it looks very shiny and new and I just love black  s:) :) s:)

I live in an estate where I have to clear 5 speed bumps before my house, each of varying size, some bigger than others and I have no problem clearing any of them.  However .... my car is not in any way lowered and I intend to keep it that way unless I ever buy a house at the start of the estate  s:P :P s:P

I agree with above posts about it probably looking better in lighter colours altho it isnt quite as bad as what them pictures I have taken make out.

All in all, very nice kit if you have a professional to fit it, but you definately need someone with alot of patience and someone who knows what they are doing.  My Side Skirts alone took 2 and a half days to modify and fit correctly.

I'm sorry Andy, club rules don't allow me to do that, as the pics are on an ebay ad, but you can have a look under mr2 roadster and you'll see the one I meant. This particular one doesn't have the side skirts of the JDL kit though, which is a little unusual, but its interesting to see anyway.

The front does look nice on it, I love the 'custom built rear spoiler' that looks very familiar to me...
Front does look a bit lower than the sides which isn't great, but does look nice on red.

really haven't had time to fit the kit yet, but might have a go - unsure whether to prep the skyline or the 2.  Anyways, the JDL car is lowered by about 40mm and also has a front splitter. The kit without the splitter isn't so low and should clear speedbumps fine.    As mentioned, the finish on these kits is pretty poor, elasticity - well there isn't much at all but then it is a cheap kit.  Colour wise, mines in blue which i'm not really sure would go with the kit. gonna try it and if i dont like the result then it'll be re-spreayed another colour - possibly pearl white.

my 2 cents on the black car with the kit - change the wheels.  Different wheels, possibly bigger or lighter colour would make the kit stand out more and totally change the appearance - Shoes make the man!

Love the yellow callipers. I still don't know what colour to do mine. They're black at the moment but I want to match them to the interior, trouble's new interior got me thinking I want to spruse mine up a bit too, also match them to the new LEDs I decide to put in the dash  s:D :D s:D

Problem with black it looks great clean but you can't see small details in the bodywork as well. It probably looks 100% better in the flesh. I like the rear and sides but not 100% in the front, it looks like the nosecone sits really short. The other good thing about having it in silver, you can paint the middle section of the rear bumper black.

                                                           Burgundy Red

The piccys are straight from getting it from the garage. It still needs a good clean, but was advised not to do anything for a week to let it 'settle'.

As for the kit.....Well the chap at the bodyshop didnt like fitting it one bit. Said it wasnt very well made, the fibreglass needed an awful lot of work to get it to fit the vehicle and generally not a very good kit (from a fitters point of view) at all!!
Still, I am very pleased with the results.

The colour is an Opel dark red...not sure of the RAL number, but will post it later for those interested.
The blue mesh (yes it is Dan) actually looks a lot better in real life. The photo's dont really do it justice. Its also on the front, but you cant see it on those pics.
Calipers will be re-painted different colour when I have time.
Personally I quite like the wheels!
There are a few 'tweeks' that still need to be done to parts of the car in order to get it looking just as I want, but they will have to wait till I have more time.
Gonna think about engine tweeks for next year. Maybe re-bore and new cams but dont really know enough about engines to see what gains can be made going this route instead of going the turbo/supercharger route (which seems a bit expensive for the gains!).
Glad you all like the colour...It has turned out much better than I had hoped.

Mel.

Hi guys....back from overseas for a while again...

Garage is playing up over the issues.....didnt take the devs key inserts out when respraying (so bit of blue behind). Didnt do inside of petrol flap. Slight (but noticeable) difference in colour on kit to rest of bodywork. Missed a bit on the inside of the doors. Plus a few other minor things.
Looks like I am going to have to go the legal route to get it sorted as they dont want to know now!

Clearance is very low I have to  sloooowww right down for speed humps and have clipped one already, and the cars standard height!

Might look at silver facelift vents instead of those pre ones....thoughts???

Unfortunately Mel you always get a slight difference in colour between the metal panels and plastic bumpers etc because of the difference finishes achieved on different materials.

Darn. I finally find a kit I like and it seems everyone and his dogs getting one. It's my own fault, I should stick to performance.

Love the look of the kit. Had an idea to change the rear end. Look forward to seeing it in the paint.

BTW I e-mailed JDL as the full kit pictured says it does not come with the Diffuser it is pictured with but they don't sell it as a seperate item.
They said that if you buy the full kit they will supply it FREE. Have lost the e-mail though as it was in my junk folder. Oops

No gonna stick to the original plan for the moment. Will wait till I see one for real. I don't like the rear end as they sell it but me being me I have a plan to modify it. lol. Would be a big thing to fit it though as would want to get a full respray, new headlights, big spoiler and some better wheels. Also maybe my original exhaust idea might resurface.
