After waiting what seemed like ages for our booked appointment to come around, me, the mrs, and my '2 (Pearl) took a trip to Jack Smith's in Swansea on Saturday to give her a new soft top (Pearl, not the Mrs.)
This is what the old one was like - in quite a bad way.

When we arrived, Raymond, who owns Jack Smith's, got to work, cutting out the rear window, and dismantling all the rear plastics :-

At this point, Mrs. DucatiRoss and I went for a walk along Swansea's lovely beach front and then took lunch in a nice Italian restaurant, enjoying the gorgeous, baking sunshine.
About 4 hours later, we returned to find Pearl had been transformed !

To say I was delighted is a total understatement - I was thrilled to bits with the fantastic job Raymond had done, making the hood from scratch and doing all the fitting, for only £300 all in !
If you are thinking about getting a new hood, don't think twice, book in with Ray. He'll do a totally brilliant job and is a lovely, really funny bloke too.
I'm made up ! Hope you guys like it too.
Only trouble is, it make the seats look really bad, so I just suppose I'll have to get them recovered now too !

Roof is red mohair fabric, I think Raymond uses fabric from BAS hoods. Lovely quality.

You are not wrong !! s:wink:  s:wink:
Just saving up now ! But colour and fabric options are causing some difficulty. Red leather with black fabric inserts ?? What do people think ?
Red leather bolsters and black alcantara centres. That's the way forward. s;-) ;-) s;-)
That looks fantastic
Nice work. What are you going to put on it to keep it protected and clean?
It's amazing how it's mad the car look 10 times newer! Red hood on the silver looks awesome too
Looks great. I'm now very jealous.
Wow what a difference. Perfect for the car. Congrats, looks brilliant (an great value)
Quote from: "StuC"Red leather bolsters and black alcantara centres. That's the way forward. s;-) ;-) s;-)
That's what I was thinking StuC, but the upholstery man said "alcantara is rubbish and I won't work with it"! Back to the drawing board then ...
Thanks so much for all your positive comments. I too can't believe how it makes it look a different car altogether !
That looks beautiful s:D :D s:D
Can I ask why not just plain red leather seats?
More reassurance that the blue hood Ray is fitting on july 29th will be a cracking deal!
Quote from: "moorx"That looks beautiful s:D :D s:D

Thanks moorx !
I was thinking about :-
- full leather getting too hot when car left parked with hood down
- leather also being a bit slippery when driving 'enthusiastically'
- contrasting colours may add a little extra something
But open to suggestions !
I find my celica leather seats hold me very very well even when driving very enthuisastically s:) :) s:)
guessing the fit is good? did he give any advisories of use?
ive got 305 miles to travel to get mine done hope its a good day as i might get a tan out of it hehe
Quote from: "tomaky"More reassurance that the blue hood Ray is fitting on july 29th will be a cracking deal!
It certainly will - he was finishing off a Honda S2000 with a blue hood when I arrived and it looked lovely !
It'll be worth every one of those 305 miles, tomaky !
Mind you, he doesn't rate MR2 hood mechanisms ! Doesn't like how they operate and finds them quite tricky to make and fit a hood on.
How different are celica seats to MR2 ones ? Do they fit in MR2's ? s:idea:  s:idea:
The fit is really good - very tight at the moment and much harder to get the catches done up. Just needs a little stretching !
Be careful on the tanning front - I only spent a couple of hours walking along the Swansea beach wall and got third degree burns, so pack your sun-tan cream !
oooh s:) :) s:) total milage going to be 610 :O long long day!
Aii think he said to me he cant understand why they made it so it nips the shoulder causing a tear. They certainly do, with some medling s:) :) s:) somewhere in my project thread (in my signature) theres a picture of them. Basically what you have to do is fit your mr2 seat rails to the celica seat, not too hard of a job. im lucky that my celica seats came with a set of mr2 rails for me to fit.
Sounds good s:) :) s:)
you can adjust the clatches a touch to make them initially easyer to reach the clasp.
Quote from: "ducatiross"the upholstery man said "alcantara is rubbish and I won't work with it"!
I couldn't disagree more. I had a car with half leatehr half alcantara and those seats were awesome. Good level of grip, looks great. Having an alcantara centre also means you dont burn/freeze your ass (depending on season).
Also... Toyota thought it was so rubbish that the TF300's have half and half
Perhaps he has had bad experiences working with it. Doesn't mean it is rubbish.

Never thought that a red hood would look as good on a silver as it does on the Sable Red Edition (my favourite combination) - But that has changed my mind - And for only £300 - Very tempted to trek to Swansea now!
quoted me 280 so all in with petrol im looking 380-400 depending on my right foot hehe
Fantastic value! I paid 400 second hand just for the hood material. Then I fit it myself. So definitely a great buy there. Well done.
just had idea as it seems hoods are becomnig more common to replace prob going to start a thread hoods the lot, as i know people have gone for different companies, for differerent prices and in different colours.
Looks great, think mine will be making a trip to Swansea next year.
is in reasonable condition but having spent a lot of time cleaning & treating the hood with all sorts of products nothing ever makes it look good for more than a week or so, and never folds down properly due to tears where the ears strap should be.
WOW that looks amazing and the price is unbeleivable it looks every bit as good if not better than the one weve just fitted to mine and we payed £425 to supply and spent 2 days removing the old one and fitting the new one. Glad you got it sorted Buddy.
That looks VERY good. Having seen your old hood l'm sure you must be more than pleased with the difference the new hood makes.
No pictures of the hood down, does it fold earlessly?
I hope you make as good a choice for your new seats, which are now a must have to go with the smart hood!

I know what you mean StuC and I would agree with you. In his view, the alcantara looks ok for about a year then starts bobbling. Maybe it's where he gets his materials from and a different (perhaps better) supplier wouldn't suffer from this. Haven't ruled it out though, nor having an all-leather one.
You guys who have got all leather on standard seats - how do you find it for getting too hot and support ?
Quote from: "Two's Company"Nice work. What are you going to put on it to keep it protected and clean?
Over the weekend I gave it two coats of Hood Protector by TurtleWax. I was going to use Autoglym but couldn't find any in my local Halfords. Raymond said use Fabsil, the stuff used to waterproof tents, so I might try that.

Good idea tomaky - like the other stickies with a catalogue of pictures and colour combinations, as well as suppliers and prices. Would be very useful for people.
I wouldn't adjust the catches, mohair needs a bit of time to stretch, it will be quite quick in this weather. It's doing it some good being tought

Thanks E ! Glad you like it. Hope yours went well too, even if it did take you 2 days to fit - mine would look like an abandoned tent at Glastonbury if I'd tried it !! Hence, I let a pro do it.

The new hood doesn't have facilities to fold the 'ears' in - they just lay flush out the back. I decided I preferred this because I felt it would leave fewer creases and keep the hood in better condition when folded.
The clatches have a hex length on a thread this adjusts the length. (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o184/tomaky/A0727BFC-4F61-4516-BD85-0E87FFA1FFD0_zpskurqq1lc.jpg) (http://s120.photobucket.com/user/tomaky/media/A0727BFC-4F61-4516-BD85-0E87FFA1FFD0_zpskurqq1lc.jpg.html)
I believe adjusting the clasp still gives the same end tightness, it simply extends the clasp so to initial get it on the catch is easier. I think... hehe
Quote from: "ducatiross"You guys who have got all leather on standard seats - how do you find it for getting too hot and support ?
I personally don't have any issues with it getting too hot, and I find them plenty supportive enough.
There is a small plastic locking tab on the hex nut, undo the clasp pull the locking tab upwards, it's hinged them adjust.
I new i wasn't a complete spoon s:) :) s:) make sure the tab goes back as if it doesn't it wont let you close the clasp, mine occasionally pops off.
Thanks tomaky and E - I'll give the adjusting a go and will be careful with the clip.

Like moorx I like my leather seats and they were on my want list when I bought my 2. However I can understand your apprehension as I had leather seats in an early Ford Focus and had to hang on to the steering wheel to prevent sliding off the seat! This does not happen to me with the MR2 seats.
Best try a test drive if possible, have a look at the member location map and see who is near you!

The deep, black of the mohair looks fantastic with the red, that's what we have (not an mr2) - it made a huge difference over the vinyl roof which tends to be dark grey at best
I really like the red mohair roof on silver and although I have a black mohair on my silver I am tempted to get a red now, love it.

Are you able to put up a picture showing how the roof looks folded. Am due to have new fitted in September, but don't want "ears" s:roll:  s:roll:
The ear removal feature on the OE hood is actioned by the frame and a linking strap that is located in a fabric "tunnel/ tube" stitched into the fabric of the hood
I understand that the hood ducattiross had fitted reused the existing frame .
If you will be using the same Company for your new hood and you want to keep the ear removal feature I would suggest that what would be required would be a similar fabric "tunnel/ tube" to contain the original strap in the new hood.
I would contact the Company and ask the question beforehand so that they have time to consider what would need to be done.
With or without ears a new hood has to be better than a leaky one.
Joesson is right. Mine has ears as it doesn't have the fabric tie to the bars. If you want this, you would need to discuss it with the fitter beforehand, because I don't know if it would be possible. I'll try and get some pictures of it folded uploaded for you.
Right, finally got some pictures of it :
With ears , as it is if I let it fold naturally :-

GOing to have a word about integrating the orginal channel and strap tommorow, for future custom.
Good call Tomaky!
Love the hood, really nice to see you can still have top class workmanship without being robbed! Now if only that was possible in England : )
The above post is slightly off topic but should have a response:
Why is it less costly to replace a car hood in Wales than in England?
The briefest search will show subsidies such as University fees £9000 in England , capped at £3750 in Wales.
Where do the subsidies come from?

Nice one CMH - I hope you will be as pleased as I was. Don't go expecting a flash business premise though - I think THAT is the real reason the cost is so reasonable, as well as the general cost of living in South Wales being so much less than anywhere else.
If you are in Leominster, that's only up the road from me, we should have a 'Herefordshire Chapter' of the ROC s:) :) s:)

Thanks Tom, looks neat and tidy.
I've had mine fitted for about 1 year from Ray, in black. They have done many interiors and roof replacements for businesses that I have worked with and a car club I used to help run and have seen plenty of examples of his work, which have all been fabulous.
I've had no issues so far apart from the "ears" as there is no strap but that doesn't really bother me as all the twos I've owned have had the same issue. I'm just happy that the quality is superb and the black fabric looks perfect to me as it ties in with my MR2s overall black look.. compared to the grey/green tinge of the old roof.
I believe he had a contract years ago with Toyota on replacing the rear windscreens or something and has done so many over the years, they start cutting the fabric and prepare the rear windscreen days before you are booked in so it's a quick and easy job for them with their prior knowledge, hence the low price, but I know he not a fan of the MR2 roof.
They have a small premises and are always fully booked as they do custom interior trimming etc, so book early and expect a long delay but worth the wait, he's a great guy to deal with and of course I'm going to say Swansea is a nice place to visit s:) :) s:)
I'm sure the other Welshies including myself are happy to suggest places to go while you wait if you are heading down, if you do I can post a thread up if anyone wants any info on Swansea and mumbles.
Here's a few recent pics, they are not roof specific as such (so just ask if you need any proper shots of the roof) but the ones I have show the roof up and the ears when the roof is down 1 year after fitting... obviously my MR2 may not be to your liking so behave s:) :) s:)

Called him today and making the trip in mid-November. Might get them to do my seats as well which look tired and starting to tear. I'll have to provide a sample prior to for that one though as they don't normally do the seats in the MR2. I asked for some extra padding on the sides too which they seemed happy to oblige to. So now I just have a couple of questions for you guys which I forgot to ask.... The rear window... Do they re-use our old ones from the discarded soft top? and, if so, do they re-attach the rear de-frosters? Certainly gonna need those come December. s:lol:  s:lol:
The rear window is used from a previous customer and should be fully functioning.
Quote from: "Treboeth"The rear window is used from a previous customer and should be fully functioning.
Thanks.. just for clarification, it's my actual window that will be re-used? Or one from another 'previous' customer?
Previous customer iirc

He said to me that he would fit my window if I removed it from my hood and couriered it to him ahead of the fitting date................ fine if you've got a hardtop too I suppose
im assuming the ones from previous customers are in good condition? mine isnt booked in until april

To be honest apart from the distance........ that was one of the factors that put me off a little from going to Swansea , but it does help enable that cracking price, The guy I used in Romford fits a brand new window ( non genuine mind , but you would'nt know unless you studied it )
No need to worry about the windows, so far everyone ive seen the window has been damageless, including my own. Lets be honest if there was damage it would likely be a crack in which case he wouldnt be fitting it.
Quote from: "tomaky"No need to worry about the windows, so far everyone ive seen the window has been damageless, including my own. Lets be honest if there was damage it would likely be a crack in which case he wouldnt be fitting it.
Good point Tomaky... I suppose it takes time to prepare and bond the window + mohair and so he does them beforehand and that's why a previous window is used.
I'm actually looking forward to the drive to Swansea... I'm entirely fine with driving long distances by myself... s:wink:  s:wink:
s:) :) s:) correct you are all he does s fit the skin and window s:) :) s:)
I did 650 miles there and back haha
Just wanted to say thank you for sharing this - I had been wondering where to take my Sable grey for a new roof s:) :) s:) s:) :) s:)
Quote from: "Treboeth"Very nice s:D :D s:D
As for the seats I think you know who will do those for you too.
Sorry....who would? :-) :-) :-)
The gent that does the mohair roof does all car trimming jobs i believe.
Yes Jack Smith in Swansea basically does most of the fabric upholstery work on a car.
s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:
It's this for full leather that looks and functions as well as the brand new factory version? If so, anyone got an idea of price for the two and whether he can match the seat to the roof colour if he did both? Like on a red edition....?

Ask Ducatiross about this as he spoke to them about his seats or just phone Jack Smiths boys and have a quick chat on the phone.
Where are you in Uk?
Think he quoted £300 to me.
its his brother who does the retrimming name his gerald, i spoke to main guy and told me speak his brother. i sent him an email with some plastics wanted doing havent heard back yet will chase that tomorrow
if 300 is prob next years price unless materials gone up could easily be that.
Gerald is on holiday until Next Monday, spoke to Jack earlier and he said to ring Monday once Gerald is back.

I park mine on the road. Is there any reason not to go mohair? Are there issues with looking after it, or is it just the usual 'keep it clean, and keep it treated'?
I had a couple of canvas ragtops in my youth, so I'm used to looking after them properly. Just never had a mohair...
Sent Ducatiross a PM as his has been on four months and may be he can post an updated review.

Nothing special, just clean it carefully and use protection..... Lol s:D :D s:D
Try keep it from under trees.
CMH - Nice job ! Ours could be twins !
Following Treboeth's request, here's an update on my red mohair roof that I had fitted by Ray back in June.
It's all good really. Very good.
- the red is more prone to marking than black vinyl, so keep the black plastic rear deck surround clean as mine isn't and leaves black marks on the roof after it's been folder. These come off easily with a good wash.
- I used it all over the summer and left it outside in the sunshine and there are no signs of the colour fading, though I suspect it's too early to tell at this point.
- DON'T leave it under trees if you can help it - I can't avoid it on my drive and the sap they drop onto the roof overnight is incredible - really sticky horrible stuff. But again, quick clean with soap and water and it comes off.
- I've applied at least 4 coats of waterproof protector in the last 4 months. This helps to keep the dirt off too. Once washed, it looks brand new every time.
- General fit and finish is still excellent - the hood folds down well if handled with a little care to ensure it has cleared the windowframe rails both sides (and not just dropped from a height). It fits properly, is nice and taut, no wind rattle and definitely no leaks, even at high speed and bad rain.
- In short, 4 months in and I'm still delighted with it. Regardless of price, I think it is a great asset, but taking the price into account as well, it's a total bargain.
Hope that helps anyone considering doing it.
As for Gerard, the upholster (Ray's brother-in-law), when we were there in June, there was a possibility that he was moving out of the premises. This might have happened and may explain why people have struggled to get hold of him.
Another mohair tip, to add do not jet wash it as you would the bodywork, glancing blows from a distance, no concentration of power, also dont rub hard at it.
cool, it looks better than red vinyl, they should of done a mohair option when new, i hope jack smiths set fire to my vinyl red when its off, thinking i booked too far ahead when i booked april 15
Have to say im very happy with my hood, its no work of art looking closely there are a few imperfections, but it does the job and looks good.
Quote from: "tomaky"Have to say I'm very happy with my hood, its no work of art looking closely there are a few imperfections, but it does the job and looks good.
oww dear what is wrong with it close up? the hood fitted is cheaper than i could get a price even to just get fitting of a new hood, dont expect it to be perfect but near b nice s:P :P s:P
The rear window seal in 1 corner is not 100% aesthetically pleasing, but is a sealed unit? The fabric below it is not of even lengths this is shown by the slight slack in the centre if the window yet tight to the left and right of it. If you look straight down the seam that goes across the width of the hood above the window, you would expect this to be pretty straight, but it isn't. Im a perfectionist though remember haha
i have ocd as well that will bug me lol
Passengers side wire is possible over taught when going 70-80 slight whistle.

On mine, unless you go over it with a microscope, it looks bloomin' fantastic ! I would have another done by Ray any day of the week. But you pays your money ...
haha at microscope s:P :P s:P
i still chasing gerard the bugger re interior
The window issue was the top right could be where 2 ends of the seal join.
Had my roof fitted today, very happy!
BUT, while I was chatting to (possibly) Ray, we looked at the drains on mine. Mine were in poor condition, but Ray had a go at them to make them last longer.
He asked me to mention that you have to take the roof back off to replace them later, but he will happily put on a new set for you if you take them with you. Remember, they are the same age as the roof you are replacing, and will be at least as brittle as the roof vinyl!!
Still want a red one but SWMBO says no.

Very true
quick question, need arrange my date soon think i penciled start of april back in october lol
i saw tomaky had got the ears channel in has anyone had a roof done at smiths lately wondering what i need to mention about the channel when i am there
This looks fantastic and for £300 I know where I'll be going as its almost certain I will need one fitting on the one I buy
Quick question for those who've had a roof fitted by Jack Smith.
I have a red edition so will be looking to have a red roof, what colour is it inside? is it still black?
Also do the "ears" Chanel and strap hooks come as standard or are they by request.
Contacted them today price is £290.00 and book-in time about 10 weeks.
Assuming it's the same as the blue, the cloth is galvanised on the inside. So, yes it would be black. He installed the channel and renewed the studs on my roof without being asked. (He also repaired the drainage bags while he was at it s:D :D s:D )
He's a very nice chap (but he does like to talk Lol).
Thanks for the info Fin,
Sounds like we'll get on well!
Looks like a road trip to Swansea
That is great value for a new roof
Hi,
Has anyone got any pictures of the mohair RED hood down with the RED chilli cloth interior seats to see the contrast??
Is the red of the seat a bright red in comparison with the red roof which is a wine red colour etc?
Be interested to find out if there is an actual image taken back showing the whole MR2 with the roof down with seats together.
Or does it look noticeably bad nobody wants to show it? ... s:shock:  s:shock: s:shock:  s:shock: s:shock:  s:shock: ...Cheers s8) 8) s8)

Sorry nothing in red. But have just remembered that I didnt post picture of my new black roof.

Unfortunately that thread only shows the different colour roofs.
It doesn't show the red seats in contrast to a red roof to see the colour difference of the Reds.
If someone can post a picture of the red roof down that has red chilli cloth interior that would be great.
Do a search for the red edition mr2 on google
I have a Red edition and am having a red hood fitted next week, Will happily post picture once done.
Red edition won't be the same comparison as it's a canvas red roof with red leather.
Ducatiross can you show us an image of how your cloth red seats look with the red mohair roof down.

Fabric for red roof come from BAS he tells me.
In my opinion I think its a great job for the price, fitted by a genuine guy.
That looks fantastic
That does look really good. Most of the "RED" edition sable grey Roadsters I see for sale have really dirty or faded looking roofs so this is a big improvement!
Is that material supplied by BAS Jaguar Trim Specialist?
I have mine booked in for September due to the long waiting list.
In the meantime I used Photoshop to how it could look.
Jack Smiths is indeed supplied by BAS.
Agreed Midshipster, I couldn't get the original hood clean no matter what I did to it. I think the grain pattern trapped dirty and grime.
Also when he was removing it, it ripped off like paper! apparently the just break down and go brittle with age.
Hopefully this will be better to keep looking good, it certainly has lifted the overall look, only time will tell!
Is anyone got a mohair hood that they've had for sometime, would love to know how they age, especially if it's red. I'd be keen to see if they fade at all.
Looks fantastic and you've made me change my mind, I'm booked in for the 6th Nov for a black hood but I'm going to phone him tomorrow to change to red on my silver MR2.
Should I just ask for Red or did you have different shades to choose from?
I don't want to turn up and he has already started on a postbox red one!!!
He only does one shade of red because he gets the fabric from BAS.
Blimey! looks like it's worth the trip from Southampton! Some dumb-ass punched a hole in my soft top recently...
This is awesome! We just bought a MR2, and it needs a new roof. We shall be speaking to this gentleman.
Long way from Norwich to Swansea
had mine done this month (6th Nov 15) at Jack smiths, I'm well pleased with the new look Red Hood.
