I have got a house in Toronto where I had stayed when I was a bachelor. After the marriage, I moved to another house which is a bit more spacious. Instead of leaving the house empty, I have given it for rent. The renters are great folks, a nice young newly wedded couple.
Last day the house was burglarized. The thieves came in by breaking out a front window. So I have to replace the windows. Along with the replacement of windows, I would like to fix a glaring security film in the house. While researching, I found that adding a residential security window film ( m https://protectionplus.ca/residential/w ... hTbUP.dpbs (https://protectionplus.ca/residential/window-film/#sthash.MUihTbUP.dpbs) m ) is the best way to make the windows smash proof. Has anyone of you tried it at home? My question is whether the window security film is a snake oil or will it work? Should I consider anything while installing a security film? Please share your ideas.
Now this is going back about 30 years but my family and I used to live in Colombia back in the height of the Escobar days. And we lived near the center of Bogota. Bombs were going off I dare say somewhat regularly, by my recollection.
We had this film put on the windows. I remember it well, it came it massive rolls and weighed an absolute ton.
It was to prevent the windows shattering in the case of an explosion nearby, but also for security (as if the massive bars in front of the windows weren't enough). So, I guess they work. If anything, it'll make their job harder as they'll need to bring a strong cutting device to cut through it, as breaking won't work
We had a leftover roll that travelled with us for years after that and I had a tinker with a bit once. Big scissors couldn't cut it. It just folded under the blades. It was hard and did not stretch or tear under my strength
Yes, we had to have some fitted to a window that is at a low height to prevent anyone falling through the glass. Seems to be pretty strong stuff and satisfies UK building regulations.
We use MAXAM products for emergency glazing repairs.
They also do security films

Slight issue if you have an accident and they can't get you out of your car.

FWIW very few residential burglars break windows to gain access. It raises attention quickly and the chances of injury (and therefore forensic identification through blood) are high. I don't know what the situation is in Toronto, but UK at least I wouldn't bother with window film. Better off closing your windows when out, ensuring you have good quality locks and doors, and an alarm.
Surely if you put Spam on your windows it would restrict visibility somewhat???
