This maybe a stupid question but I don't know the answer
Do our dashboards run on the CANBUS system?
How do standalone ecu' s run the dash?
Thanks
This is something I would like to know 100%.
My gut says no.
I think people end up running 2 ECU like I do with the V6.
Krampsnetts ChrisGB Headcase and others will know for sure.
Monsi said this earlier this year.
"The guy who tuned my Megasquirt uses Motorsport Electronics ECU's for his "car with engine in wrong place" projects and seems very happy with them. I would check and see if they support the crank and cam profiles for our engines, it's also worth going through the MR2 circuit diagrams and working out how many inputs/outputs there are, and what signals they expect. The standard ECU also controls the dashboard (temperature gauge, Charging indicator, Oil pressure light and bizarrely the handbrake light, I couldn't find any off the shelf solution to this and ended up making a CAN bus adapter for the dash as a temporary solution), and also the immobilizer."
When we started looking into the wiring for the Adaptonic Standalone they (Adaptronic) suggested that we keep the stock ECU to run the dash and immobiliser
Mr2 isn't CAN

So how do you run the dash?

My 2gr has the dash running from the stock ECU

CAN is just a protocol. Cars ran electric dashes long before CAN s:) :) s:)
Mk3 MR2 is OBD2
From tinterweb:
CANUSB could be used to read CAN signals from a vehicle by connecting CAN_L, CAN_H and CAN GND to the correct pins on OBD-II connector, but without software to interpret the messages they would be pretty meaningless. So, if you want to interrogate your car, get an OBD-II scanner or scan tool, which uses PID codes defined by SAE J1979.

Keep stock ECU.
Piggyback it off the relevant sensors so it can read speed revs etc.
It does nothing except the dash.
