Aerial replacement Question

Just stuck in my Alpine MP3 player over the weekend and the difference to the OE unit is that the automatic aerial always comes up now regardless of whether the radio is on or not whereas the Sony it would only come up when you put the radio on.

My question is, is it possible to replace the automatic aerial with the stubby ones you see on Ebay.com for about $20? I tried unscrewing the aerial but it doesn't come out so presume you need to get at it from under the wheelarch but just wanted to check that these stubby aerials actually fit

If it helps, my car is a 2000 model with the 3.5 foot automatic aerial and it is bloody ugly !!!

There are regular GB's on Spyderchat for a 'bee-sting' replacement aeriel. The other (cheap) option would be to wire a switch into the aeriel power feed, you can then override it yourself.

This is a mod that is well worth doing.  I can't imagine what Toyota were thinking with that giant aerial.
