it won;t hurt too much other than extra weight if you add an extra 1/2 inch in width to both of those, 6" wheels are quite rare

best bet though is talk to teh guys at Demon Tweeks. they know there stuff and are used to resolving this issue for customers who know hat they want rather than Nova boy who most outlets support. (PS Not that Demon tweeks don't sell a lot of shit for Nova boy as well  :-) :-) :-) )

Thanks again, is it worth just getting the 15 x 6.5 rims all around then? and use the original tyres sizes?  I read somewhere that it was a bad idea to have the same size wheels front and back and keeping the back wider was generally considered better..

it's acceptable if you have to but personally I''d keep teh wheel stagger, even it meant buying different wheels

the wider teh wheel the more a given tyre is stretched. effectively changing its width fractionally

so a 205 tyre on a 6.5" rim will have a slightly smaller contact patch than a 205 tyre on a 7" rim

might be worth a look at compomotive wheels, they will pretty much make any offset or width you want, just put their MOs on the VXR and very happy

Why don't you go 16" on the back, sell your existing rear 15" Toyo tyre and get a set of new rears(Toyo's) to match your front, cost wise it's not a great deal of difference - in other words a 03 set-up.

If you like the Momo I can reccommend a place that will save you a good £70 in total over what you would pay at DT, even with our club discount.

I've got Momo's, weight wise I'm a kilo over the standard front wheel including the tyre, and I expect the back to be lighter due to 215 rears I'm using. Offset you can expect 38mm on the front and 40mm on the back - basically it pushes the wheel out slightly giving it a wider stance.

Thanks Rob,

Now you've got me thinking...

I could got for:

Front: 15 x 6.5in with the old rears 205/50R15 Toyo's  (Offset 38mm) (
Rear: 16 x 7in with new 225/45ZR16 Toyo's (Offset 40mm)                         <<<<< Not sure about this size need to check.

And sell the old alloys with the two front tyres

What is the 03 set-up? may I'll adopt that.  s:) :) s:)

It's 15" x 6" front and 16" x 7" back, tyre size is Front is 185 / 55 x 15"  and back 215 x 45 x 16", so the above sizes would be OK, especially the back.

Has anyone got any high res pics of 5 spoke 17's lowered? Ive got some MVK 1's sitting at home which i bought a few weeks ago but dont know whether to splash out on tyres for £250 Falken FK452 (225 35 17) and (204 40 17) or sell them. I want to see other peoples 5 spoke 17's lowered, before making a decision.

17 x 7 offset 42.

I am thinking of upgrading my standard alloys to eiher 16 or 17. What im asking what would be stagger on both including correct tyres front and back not to up set handling.

I dont think.it does.the ride or the handling any good but plenty disagree.

Im going back to stock Alloys from 17s as I find the ride a little too harsh

Personally I couldn't discourage the use of 17s enough, but that's a personal preference apparently

What tyres did you have on the 17s shnazzle?
Silver 2004 MR2 -  Unmodified but very shiny.

twas on Helen's car. Uniroyal Rainsport 3

CAn't complain about the tyres to be honest. They grip very well. Albeit they're quite soft so you do get a bit bouncy handling and resistance to turn in.

So why are 17s so bad, I had assumed it was short, stiff and uncomfortable tyre walls?

Its hard to explain, but it doesn't feel "Right" compared to the others I test drove on Std Wheels
Hopefully my New Std alloys will arrive tomorrow so I can get them fitted this weekend

Maybe it's increased unsprung weight?

Nope. Helen's 17s on SP12s were lighter, front and back, than the 15/16 MonzaRs she got

S12vea loves his sp12.
StuC has 17s and thinks theyre great.

Ardent got rid asap hated them
As do shanzzle and the wife

Tomaky has sp12 and has slowly gone off of them

Me i havent had them. Price of tyres initally put me off but i now have 205 front tyres and regret it so cant see bigger wheels/tyres being of any benifit. Makes the front end feel heavy.

Oh well this all sounds like a good reason not to spend a fortune on new wheels, that must be a good thing.

One thing must be said. The mr2 on the 17 SP12s is probably the best looking combo. There's no doubt in my mind.

As a whole I have to agree. I like to keep my car looking decent, but it's by no means an FGRob/Bernie11a/s12vea job.
Top of the list has always been handling for me. That's what the car is built for.
It's pretty blatantly obvious the car wasn't meant for brute power (although it'd be nice).
Next steps were to make it comfortable for daily driving without losing out too much on the handling.

So many cars these days are there to look the business and just be generally sh1te in every other way.
