hi all just bought my 2001 mr2 tried to play cd and it just takes the disc and makes big grinding noise then spits the disc out, is this a common problem with these cars. also what is a true figure for mpg many thanks.

Put 'mpg' into the search box and you will get a ton of info.

As to the cd, you could try a cd cleaner. Also iirc the headunit will not play ripped cds, is it an original?

Not able to offer much help in terms of fixing your existing unit, but by coincidence I put the original head unit from my facelift car on eBay last night, just in case you are interested:
