Following inspiration from Dan, I'm undertaking a turbo build of my own! I've just purchased a new manifold from Turbokits.com and now I'm trying to decide what turbo to go for. Dan has put the GT2554R in, which seems to be delivering great results but I'm still wondering about the 28 instead. I'm going to install a link standalone ecu and injectors from an Astra VXR. Any hints/tips would be most welcome!

Tips: speak to Dan :)

There's not a hell of a lot he hasn't covered, considerered, discussed, etc.

As for turbo; get the right one for what you want.
Lag, kick, top end, low end torque/flow, etc.

Cooling cooling cooling. Get a charge cooler. Don't consider intercooler. I don't care how fancy a setup you've designed or how big the intercooler is. Just get a charge cooler.
Oil cooler. Vents. Fans. Shields. Do everythinf you can and must to keep intake, exhaust, oil and water temperatures down.

Nice choice on the Link. Can't go wrong. The EMUBlack mapped by RRR is a winner if you want to save pennies but the Link is definitely a class above.

Cooling.

Definitely go charge cooler. If you do it from the start the cost probably won't be that much different.

Other than that it's pretty flexible.

I love my turbo. But if you want more kick. Go 28. I've been in a car with the 28 and it's a huge burst of power but a fair bit of lag.

The only 28 to go for is the gt2860rs even then Dan's gt2554r with a charge cooler would probably push 260 or more at the crank and I wouldn't want to push a stock 1zz too much harder. Then there is the torque limit on the gearbox to consider.

Charge cooler it is then! Yeah I don't fancy having to upgrade the gearbox too!

michaelb

Is there a particular charge cooler that works?

Check out spyder lees write up on YouTube. He does a comparison.

Biggest eBay chargecooler you can get.
Proper Bosch pump.
Quality charge cooler rad again biggest that will fit.
Or if you have budget constraints try the fiat Cinquecento rad.

How do you know which will fit? Just a guesstimate?

dan944

Decide your intake pipe diameter. Probably 2.5" (63mm) then search for coolers with this diameter Inlet. In all fairness. I found there's LOADS of room so just get one and make it fit lol. Use the dimensions to check. You could even mock it up with a cereal box or something.

The barrel one looks good and probably fits better but the stats seem to suggest it isn't actually very good! I'll have a hunt on eBay. Did you put a charge cooler in Dan? I thought you had an intercooler?

According to research (Lee) the eBay ones are better. I haven't researched it properly though.

(Sheepishly) I have and IC. Probably should have started with a charge cooler though. I think it's in the pipeline.

I take it I need one which goes in one side and out the other? Not one of the ones where the air pipe comes out on the same side?

Depends how you want to lay it out mate.

I think the pipework would start to get more complicated with the pipe going in and out the same side.. maybe.. I'd need to look a bit closer at it

I haven't done it so I'm not the best person to speak to but have a google and look at the images it comes up with. Design your own. Let the garage decide. It's completely up to.

I'd say intake pipework is probably the biggest variable between set ups.

When it comes to the chargecooler rad, the Ford Focus RS Mk1 CC rad fits nicely behind the front bumper as long as you don't have AC

Has anyone got any info on the longevity of the 1zz with a turbo installed? I was just chatting to a race tuning company and they were concerned about going beyond 250bhp with the old 1.8 vvti engine

shnazzle

Depends how you drive it.
People on here have had their turbos for years and many miles (Ardent, s12vea, etc). If you service it well and drive it with some degree of sympathy there's no reason why it won't do 100k miles.
Keep that oil fresh and your map good and you'll have a happy engine.
Watch for any signs of wear and address asap.

The race guys told me it would be around 2k to purchase, install and map a G4 Link Storm. Does this sound a bit steep? He said the Storm is the cheapest Link ecu that will provide the capabilities for the vvti drive by wire that I need. I looked at the EMU Black and it seems to do the job just as well but it's only about 850 to purchase.

2k sounds about right.
How come you have DBW? Is it an SMT?
That opens up a lot of cool functionaliry in the EMUBlack.
I don't know much about the Link Storm. I did research it a bit and it definitely does the job for our car. Easily.
But so does the Black.

Personal choice really. EMU is quite new on the market (but catching up quickly) and the Link has proven its worth.
I'm very happy Mike started the group buy. Amazing piece of kit.

No my car is a manual but the guy thought the mr2 has an electronic throttle? I didn't know as I've never had to find out lol. Does it not? I like the EMU Black, it does look decent
