Fuel flap sticking

I've had the car a year and the fuel flap has never opened properly. Pull the switch and very occasionally it pops open. 90% of the time you have to stick a credit card into the gap and lever it slightly. What's the best way of solving it?

Bend the springy thing out a bit more.

Remove the side vent cover and get in there with lube spray.  Free up the spring and hinge.
