If you accelerate slowly and smoothly, avoid engine labouring or over-revving you can achieve 38.2mpg!

But if you do any of those things then you have purchased the wrong car.

I get 38-39 on a long journey at motorway speeds. Probably more like low 20s round town though

Having just gone to my running costs excel spreadsheet.  I find my avg mpg since ownership is 38.05

Ahh, the early 2000s.  A time when the published mpg figures still matched what drivers could get.  Those were the days!
Today
2000 x reg pfl - blue - as original no mods
In the late 1980's
1982 x reg Toyota Corolla Liftback Coupe (also blue)
1978 s reg Mitsubishi Celeste Coupe (yellow)
