Hi all.

I have over a while now developed what I think is a tensioner rattle, but I can't be sure, and I would like a second opinion.

Let me know what you think:

Could be.  Hey they're cheap enough that replacing it is the simplest way to find out for sure.

An easy way to find out is by pulling in valve cover and you can see down to the tensioner to see how far it's pushed out against the guide.

Update:

I've removed the tensioner, and it sounds goosed to me.

Let me know what you think:

And if it is indeed goosed (Andy Ball, formerly of Bonsai tells me it is), can you replace just the pulley, or is it good practice to replace the whole assembly?

I see MWR sell the tensioner:

And the pulley:

Anything wrong with just replacing those two parts? It's a hell of a lot cheaper.

I thought you meant the chain tensioner 😅

Ah - I too, thought you meant the chain tensioner.  I'm sure you can just replace the two parts.  The rest of it can be dismantled, cleaned, greased and reassembled.

You might see what Toyota charges for the parts???  MWR ain't cheap.

@Alex Knight
I found that TCB offer Toyota parts at less cost than some others.

Carolyn

I'm pretty sure this item is the same as on the 1ZZ.  If so, I've got one or two in my pile of parts.

You're welcome to one for the cost of postage.

Yes, I think it's the same as the 1ZZ also.

That's really very kind of you @Carolyn but I think I'm going to fit a brand new part. The car sees track work, which is high load, and the peace of mind a brand new part is worth it for me. Thank you anyway.

Does anyone know how to get the tensioner damper off the engine without jacking the engine up?

There's not enough room between the shock tower and the stud to slip the damper off.

You cannot wind the stud out either because it's too long and hits the shock tower on the way out.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Carolyn

IF it's like the 1ZZ, you don't pull the bolt all the way out, but just far enough to lift the tensioner, with the bolt, free of the block, and take it out along with the bolt.

Thank you.

I need to replace the damper/spring also as it's not serviceable, so I really need to remove it.
