High idle

I am looking at another car as mine was totalled at the weekend as I got smashed in the back when stationary and shoved into the car infront.

The one I looked at yesterday is great but it's been sat for a while. When you start it the car idles at about 600rpm which feels low and one touch of the pedal sends its to 1300 which is fine for a cold start but it never drops even when up to temp and driving it stays at 1300.

Any ideas? Other than that the car is really good

#1
Sticky Idle Air Control Valve.  Common issue.  A bit fiddly to deal with but not too hard.  It often happens when a car has sat idle for a longish time.

Thanks Carolyn that confirms what I thought. They can be cleaned right or is it best to just replace? Would a really long drive help it because the car is two hours away so it will get 139 miles coming home

Carolyn

They can be cleaned. When you open it up there's a rubber gasket.  Take that out before you spray with carb cleaner as the rubber will swell.

While you've got the intake in bits it's a good time to change the air filter too.

Drive it home by all means.  I doubt the IACV will cure itself on the way.

Sorry to hear a about your car getting written off.  It's such a  shame to lose another one.

In case you don't know the car uses JIS spec screws. Buying 2 or screwdrivers wouldn't be a bad idea.  If you can't at the moment use a hammer to tap a crosshead bit into the screws, or they'll chew.

Pleased to hear you're ok......

Mr Twos in Birmingham looked after the last car and will also look after this one so he can do the job just wanted to check my thinking it wasn't anything serious and therefore time to walk away.

Thanks everyone I'll get the deal done
