Gearbox Oil Change (SMT Car)

Hello again everyone,

Another one of those newbie questions - I have the SMT 5-speed in my car and I'm looking to replace the gearbox oil, as I have no idea when it was last changed.

I've done some searching and found an excellent guide here on the forums which I will follow, but wanted to clarify a couple of things:


- Is the procedure to change the oil the same, even though my car has it mated to the SMT system?

- What is the oil capacity of the 5-speed box?

- What oil would you recommend? I've seen references to both Castrol Transaxle 75w90 and Redline MT-90 (which is pricy stuff)



Thank you again for your advice. I apologise if this has been covered elsewhere, I did some pretty thorough delving but my have missed something.

(I'm also keen to replace the SMT fluid at some point also, but the gearbox seems the simpler of the two to begin with).

Yes the gearbox internals are the same.

The MT90 is pricey, but as one only changes gearbox oil once in blue moon, it's worth it.  Two quarts (it comes in Yankee measures) are just right for a five speed.

When I first put it in my manual MR-S box there was a noticeable difference in the smoothness of the shifting.

The SMT system is bolted onto the gearbox has a separate fluid system, so you can treat the gearbox like any other.

Awesome - my fear was that there was some kind of difference between the manual 5 speed and the SMT 5. Thanks for setting my mind to rest folks.
