Title: Toyo Proxes T1-R
Post by: Tem on June 27, 2004, 20:18
Anyone have any experience with these..?

Of course they are supposed to be better than the T1-S, but...  s:roll:  s:roll:

They are even available on the right sizes (185/55/15 & 205/50/15) and the prices seem pretty great.

They are brand new... would be surprised if anyone has put them on a 2 yet. Still, i will probably need new boots soon so if they are supposed to be better than the superb S's then i will give them a try   s:twisted:  s:twisted:

take a look there.

Looks they are available in teh same sizes. and I'm guessing but the new tread pattern looks like they will have stiffer sidewalls. Always a good thing.

Be interesting to see how these compare, but I'm guessing the main difference will be a reduction of road noise...

Had a look on the Toyo website when this post origianlly went up. I know it shouldn't be too much of an issue, but I am not sure I like the "look" of them as much as the S's. Probably a better tyre though.

But, as so many people have had good stories told about the S's, I think I will still go with them.........

the T1-S' look like they have a better wet weather tread pattern that the R's. but until someone has put some on there '2 and give it a good thrashin we'll have to see...

Those tyres are VERY cool looking; they're like semi-slicks    s:twisted:  s:twisted:
I'm quite sure they'll work very well in the dry; in the wet however...    s:? :? s:?
Contrary to what Toyo say, the tread doesn't look very "wet weather-ish" to me...   But then I'm not a tyre engineer    s:lol:  s:lol:
I'm looking forward to reading people's experiences  s:!: :!: s:!:

The TI-S is on the right, I prefer the look of it to the R, how sad is that - the tyres can be bling as well!
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on July 7, 2004, 08:21
The T1-S looks better IMHO but i can see how the T1-R would be better in the wet... still, toyos aint exactly crap in the wet anyway, but if they are even better and dont make the dry road holding any worse then i will get some. Unfortunatly i just need rears at the moment   s:oops:  s:oops:  so wont be getting these just yet.

Your not doing the same size tyre all round are you?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on July 9, 2004, 09:25
no no ... just they delviered my rears early.  I am keeping the same size as stock.  I just wich my fronts would arrive.
Title:
Post by: GSB on July 9, 2004, 11:07
Same thing happened to me, I got the rears first and fitted them whilst waiting for the fronts to arrive. The back end was all over the place, totally unpredictable and downright dangerous handling.  s:shock:  s:shock:

Thankfully, balance was restored with new fronts, and after a few miles of scrubbing in they are superb tyres. Just be bloody careful when they're new!

thanks for the tip .. just got my fronts and they are being fitted at lunchtime for £25 down at ETB.  I cant wait I have that childish grin back ... it iwll be good to get some grip back!  How long will they take to scrub in?
Title:

a good 250 miles or so in my experience.

Depends on how long you want them to take... Mark says 250 miles, I say the equivilent to 2-3 laps (say 2-4 miles)..

2-3 laps I'd agree with, on the road however they don't exactly get the same heat cycling.

In fact, they don't even look as good as the T1 S    s:? :? s:?

Ok, ok, I know, tires aren't really a cosmetic issue, but if they do very well what they're designed for, good looks are a nice bonus right?    s:) :) s:)

Does anyone know much about BF Goodrich tyres? I know they're now owned and manufactures by Michellin but that's about all. I like the look of their new G-Force Profiler which looks very similar to the new Proxes T1-R.

From what I have read previously the Goodrich's are not worth the money as they are not that good; especially on a 2.

Seeing as nobody has posted anything here for a while, I guess I may be the first to have driven some T1R's.  Unfortunately for my reputation here, these were not on a '2, but on an MX5.  Specifically my mate's (now supercharged!) MX5 that we use for trackdays.

During an all-day session at Cadwell yesterday, we made a few observations.  The tyres felt really grippy and predictable, good feel.  Sizes were 195/50x15 all round.  We certainly worked them hard, but we were slightly surprised by how soft the compound was, though obviously you trade grip for life.  They got hot and started to go off after a few laps but playing with the pressures helped a lot.  Perhaps oddly, reducing pressures 2psi all round seemed to make the handling more consistent as the tyres got hotter (as well as killing off some nasty understeer).  Seemed unusually pressure-sensitive to me.

In all, I think I'll get some for the '2 when the time comes, but I don't expect them to last anything like as well as the RE040's.
Title: BFG KD's

Quote from: "heathstimpson"From what I have read previously the Goodrich's are not worth the money as they are not that good; especially on a 2.

According to the TireRack comparison ratings, the BFG KD's offer the highest dry grip (9.5 rating) on the market, short of "R" compound track-only tires; KD's are rated better for dry grip than the Bridgestone S-03's.

I know some New Hampshire guys who swear by them ... on track days.

... anyone seen full specs, including tire weight?

The old Toyo T1-S had a reputation for being light-weight ... and were used with lightweight wheels to achieve 0.4 - 0.5 seconds PmD gains by many folks.

Toyo's site doesn't seem to have T1-R yet...the weights will probably appear there once they do as they have the weights for other tyres as well, here's T1-S:

Hi guys.
This is my first post on here and I'm after some advice.
I have an O2 reg Roadster and I have a serious tyre issue.
A few weeks back I decided I needed new rear tyres as the original Yokohamas were well past their sell-by-date (the fronts are getting low, but still got a few miles left in them.)
I went along to a local tyre place and they recommended some Avon tyres.
I went with their recommendation and had them fitted to the back.

However, the first time I blatted down my local by-pass the handling felt all over the place. The steering seemed to take on a mind of it's own. It felt very light, and under high speed acceleration the car got very twicthy. It felt almost like the front end was "on ice". Very frigthening.
Any ideas why? Does mixing the tyres really have such a drastic effect? Could it be something else?

Anyway, the problem hasnt gone away, and to top it off one of the new tyres has a irrepairable puncture. Therefore I want to ditch the new tyres and also replace the fronts. I was looking at these Toyo tyres.

Any help and advice very much appreciated.

Regards,

Ian.

yep on these cars, mixing tyres has that bad an effect.

downrigjht dangerous and Avons aren't particularly marvelous tyres anyway.

take it very easy until you have your T1Rs fitted,

and even then take it a little easy for teh first week, proxies take a while for the release agent to rub off.

I've got four Toyo Proxes T1-R's going onto my Racing Hart rims tomorrow afternoon. It'll be a couple of weeks until I get to use them, but I'll offer up an opinion when I can. Sizes I've gone for are 235/35/19 front and 265/30/19 rear. Ideally I wanted 225/35/19 front, but these won't be available for a few months. I may ultimately go to a wider tyre at the rear (10" wide rear rims mean I've got room for manouvere) but we'll see how they perform first.

Racing Hart in Japan... They had to be custom made for the offsets that I required. Gareth at Envy Performance ( m http://www.envyperformance.com (http://www.envyperformance.com) m ) sorted everything out for me. Pictures:

Sharp looking wheels!

But given the difference in size next to the stock wheels, I have trouble imagining them on a '2.  I'd love to see some pics of the car when you get the wheels put on.

Just had my T1-Rs fitted.  Have only driven them 10 miles (and I know I have to wait a good 250 miles before letting loose) but what a difference in feel!  Admittedly, my old tyres were crap (and the wrong size in the rear as well), but I didn't expect such a difference: even with the release agent still on they feel more grippy.  Also quieter, which was a nice surprise.  The car just feels so much more solid.  I'm delighted.

I'm still not convinced if they are better than RE040s.  Steering doesn't feel quite as direct and the back end feels (a smidgen) looser.

I now need some rain to compare as I've only driven them in the dry so far.

Still, they are a lot cheaper than the RE040s.

I placed two orders, one for the fronts and one for the rears.

They rang me up minutes after my order to confirm details.  I asked for the tyres to be sent together.

They arrived on different days!

Still, got them at a cheap price.

Quote from: "samhain"from mytyres you have to buy a set of 4 but as you know the front size is different from the rear. Will they make up the order for you

You don't have to buy a set of four.  At the bottom of the main ordering page is a button for 2 or 4 tyres.  Select 2.

Pick your front tyres and instead of clicking on 'buy now,' click on 'save for later'.

Then do the whole thing over again.

I ordered mine from the Irish version of Mytyres (Eiretyres.com) and had no problems other than that they were much slower getting the 205/50/15s than the front ones.
