Title: FL MR2 Original Radio / CD
Post by: Brendantb on August 9, 2017, 09:06
Hi,
my MR2 came with a hokey touch screen, single DIN radio in place of the original equipment. Was the radio CD player on the FL cars the same as PFL?
I can see similar radio CD units on ebay from other Toyota vehicles. Will these be plug and play replacements for the MR2 unit?
Thanks for any help on this issue,
Brendan

FL radio is awful.
Looks rubbish and doesn't sound to hot.
Sometimes called Fisher Price.

Hi,
thanks for the replies. What is the best, least bother to fit, replacement for the OEM unit? I'd like physical buttons for the radio stations.

Sorry Brendan, haven't bought an aftermarket head unit for years, so not best person to advise. Although if buttons for radio stations are a priority, then the one positive thing I'd say is that the buttons on the FL head unit are unmissable, great  if you have sausage fingers like me. Honestly, the buttons are enormous - pretty sure that'll be why it gets called fisher price  s:) :) s:)

Brendan, how many preset radio buttons do you want/need?

I hated the FL radio - it's huge, sounds awful and was low on any features (mostly Bluetooth)... see my signature for the 1-DIN mini Pioneer headunit that I got fitted.... I just use that to stream Waze+Spotify (or BBC Radio app) into the headunit.... my headunit also has a line of 6 slim radio station pre-select buttons that would probably cover your needs. It's also VERY light and has a 4x50W MOSFET amp built in, so a pair of reasonable component speakers and you get as much sound quality as you could really justify in a Spyder...

I ended up going for an old school pioneer unit with a cd player, as the car was fitted out for a single DIN unit, and was terminated in ISO blocks. Sound quality is so-so, but I think maybe down to the poor speakers. Then again, I'm mostly listening to the engine when I'm out for a run.

standard speakers are frightening: flimsy plastics and cardboard... I did the headunit nearly 2 weeks before the speakers (I was desperate to get the audio via Spotify+Waze)... the sound quality didn't improve much at all.... but with the new speakers (and a small patch of Dynamat Xtreme around them), the improvement is staggering...

I use my MR2 as my daily commute toy... so I needed some decent speakers as sometimes I'm just pootling along in traffic...
