Title: Dashcam recommendations please.
Post by: Carolyn on December 26, 2017, 19:36
I've put off getting one for the Roadster 'cos I can't decide which one and where to mount it, with ease of button-pushing and not in my sight-line.

Also, (you know me) not too expensive and simple enough for a pensioner....  s:) :) s:)    s:) :) s:)

This might be an interesting and educational thread.

I've picked up this one for £30 (seems it fluctuates in price but there was a discount code on the page last week).

Goes with my Sable car and earlier I spent the time to push the wire into the screen surround plastics, down the driver's A pillar and under the dash to come out in front of the fag lighter.

Doesn't weigh much and it's an adhesive mount so no falling off like a suction cup would

Couple of pics in the 'what have you done to your mr2 today' thread but it's hidden behind the mirror. Unfortunately I stuck it a tiny bit too close and my garage floor is on a slight slant. Therefore once I'm no longer SORN'd it remains to be seen whether there's enough room left to level it horizontally!

Had a decent write up on the 'TechMoan' YouTube cha. El which seems to be the authoritative opinion on these cheaper ones. Some talk of earlier production models being out of focus but won't get chance to test on the road until Feb.

I purchased an entry level Nextbase camera approximately two years ago which, to be honest, I've been rather disappointed with.  The navigation through the settings is far from intuitive and, for a branded Dashcam, it feels rather cheap.  That said I've seen footage from more expensive Nextbase cameras which has been rather good.

I've had a play with a few entry level 'Transcend' cameras and they felt better quality and were far easier to navigate the menus.

I will be watching this thread with interest as I'm also in the market for another 'good value' camera to go in my two.  I'm sure there must be a sub £30 camera that suits my needs, but there's so many out there a recommendation from someone would be great - I don't want to watch back videos of drives, just something basic and reliable to help sort out any liability issues should the worse happen.

Am I allowed to give a Mod warning for this post?

1. What is this natty setup?
2. Joesson failed to mention it in the Post of the Day.
3. Jason failed to give either
3.1 mention of his Topdown (  s:wink:  s:wink:  ) epic Boxing Day Roofless drive
3.2 a Natty Video of the above.

If you're going to get apeman- I suggest getting it from Amazon. I got the 70 version for Christmas and was one of the unlucky ones to have a slightly defective screen... Loads of people get them and are very happy- I was just unlucky, but the Amazon return function is very easy Vs eBay...

What's your overall impression?  And where are you planning to mount it?

Good wishes to all of yours!

This might be an interesting and educational thread.
As I'm in the same age bracket   s:wink:  s:wink:  I too wanted something simple and not too expensive.  I bought the Transcend Drivepro 220 from Amazon and also bought 2 extra 12v power cords and an extra windscreen mount.

One mount is fitted to the MR2 and the other in the Auris.  A power cable is fitted permanently in each car and routed behind the windscreen rubber and hidden away behind the dash.  Both cables are plugged into the 12v cigarette lighter socket (I told you it was simple).  The camera lives most of the time in the Auris but I also use it in the MR2 when that's on the road - it simply unplugs from one mount & into the other.

I also use the camera in my Motorhome....I take the mount off the Auris and use the 3rd power cable in the cigarette lighter (the cable is loose over the dash because of the layout of the van dash).

Video quality is perfectly ok and fine for what I need.  Thankfully I haven't had to use the camera due to an accident or anything like that, but I have been tempted when witnessing some awful dangerous driving.

I hope this helps with your research.

Over all impression of the 70 was very good despite the screen issue ( had a little red line going up it). Comes with loads of attachments and a really nice carry case for everything... I honestly think it's a good value for money buy.. bear in mind the 70 is basically like a go pro.

How you're having a lovely break too?  :-) :-) :-)

Just my bit of input but depending on your 2's set up I'd avoid the Nextbase ones. As they stand they're a good piece of kit, fit well in front of the mirror and hardwire easy as peas. But if you're running a firm set up like mine they constantly lock recordings as if you've had a knock, even on the lowest G settings.
You also need a card different to the brand recommend by Nextbase as they don't talk to each other very well.
For the record I'm on Meister Rs set fairly soft and T1rs and it records speed humps, drain covers etc.

Finally decided to bite the bullet and buy cameras for our other cars.  I've taken a punt on a camera (x2) that promises a ridiculous amount in exchange for peanuts - it may be completely pants, and if it is I'm quite prepared to complain and return them.

Will report back when (if?) they arrive;

Just found this thread but hopefully not too late to join in.

One of the above links goes to a previous thread "Tiny dash cam " in the electrical section where I posted:

Re: Tiny Dash Cam

"I have a similar camera but it came with a separate base unit. I bought an extra base and can swop the camera between my daily and my 2"

As Ardent mentioned IT is powered via a piggy back fuse in the passenger/ near side door jamb fuse box to a 12v to 5v transformer and then around the windscreen trim to just above the mirror. An adhesive pad fits the ( seperate) base to the screen. The base is available with or without GPS facility which can be switched on or off. There is a screen on the cam that is helpful for setting up and viewing the field of view when first installing. This goes off soon after starting up.
The second base optional item,  is in my daily and I switch the camera between cars as required. I cannot see the cam fitted behind the rear view mirror without some contortions, so not in line of sight and no distractions. There are slots for two seperate microSD's I use just one, a San Disk. With my kit there was a lead with a cigarette lighter connector so can be tested very quickly and easily. Also a polarising filter which connects magnetically to the cam, this is helpful in some lighting conditions. Only down side is this filter tends to fall off at times with vibration from pot holes or poor road surface, so not infrequently!

IT is a - mini 0806 Dash Camera

This style camera was available for some time before I bought mine and there were several ' improvements" over time. It had good reviews, was relatively inexpensive, readily changeable between cars with pre installed base unit fitted, very neat small and unobtrusive and features a screen and GPS if you should want it. The link is to a review that convinced me to buy.

Unfortunately have not located my purchase details which I shall search for some more if any one needs that info.

I have a Thinkware F550D with front & auxiliary rear cameras and it is brilliant. Chose it for picture quality and performance and it hasn't let me down. The lane departure, front collision warning and drive off safety features are brilliant and work as well as my OEM Golf setup plus the picture is superb. Can be used as a dashcam for trackday vids and others also as downloading is easy and as I said, the picture quality is superb. It also has a quick capture setting if you see something and hit the capture button it stores a separate file of the 10s prior to hitting the button plus the next 50s (1min clip) for evidence or catching info etc if needed. Worth EVERY penny in my opinion. and Thinkware cameras use the same software and hardware so you can choose other models and get the same/similar performance also.

FYI, I have a hardtop fitted all the time hence rear camera, but the rear camera disconnects easily if you want to put the roof up/down for summer also. It is mounted directly behind the rear view mirror so doesn't obstruct any view of the road and I just moved the rear view mirror when I set it up etc. I can still check the screen by glancing behind the mirror from below if needed.

Had a decent write up on the 'TechMoan' YouTube cha. El which seems to be the authoritative opinion on these cheaper ones. Some talk of earlier production models being out of focus but won't get chance to test on the road until Feb.

The two ridiculously cheap cameras I ordered duly arrived and were, to be honest, truly awful.  The cases were constructed of different material and they didn't even look as though they were new.

I sent an email complaining and listed the problems with them - I was immediately given a refund and they didn't want them returned either - says it all really.

Just upped my budget to £30 and bought the one suggested by Bossworld (although didn't realise that until I returned to this thread).

Currently at Amazon with a £7.99 discounted offer making it £29.99.

Let us know how you get on please. Apparently an early batch had a focus issue. I don't think I'll be back on road to test until March given the weather forecasted the next few weeks.

The reviews are overwhelmingly positive and my last Techmoan recommendation (SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi) is still going strong.

I would be very wary of signing up for a few quid saving.

It seems a grey area at the moment but if you can't produce the footage, would your insurance be void?

Too many risks including Micro SD corruption IMO. Equally I recently found the SJ4000 was only keeping one recent video, the reason being I'd taken the battery out a couple of weeks back and forgot to reset the date, meaning it wouldn't overwrite any 'newer' files. Odds are I wouldn't have been able to produce any footage if there had been a smash.

Just my two penn'orth.

I read the small print when I renewed a policy a few weeks ago - it said that they would remove the discount in an event of a claim for which you could not produce dash cam footage, so I don't think you insurance would be invalid.

Always good to ask the question directly when you take out a policy though.

Well at least they will leave you insured I suppose it's fair enough to claim back the discount.

Well my 'Yi' camera has arrived.

The quality of the packaging and its contents seems far superior to the Nextbase camera I purchased a year or two ago for twice the price.

I've reviewed footage from both day and night and can safely say, that is far superior to the entry level Nextbase we have in our other car too.

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, for the minuscule price (£30) it's a no brainer.  I've not tested the ADAS function as I'm not interested in that although I have tested the Wi-fi function + App which lets you quickly review and download footage to your smartphone - that also works great.

Just need to add a class 10 micro sd card (up to 64gb), everything else you need is in the box.

The power lead plugs into a usb, and it comes with a single 12v usb plug for you cigarette lighter socket.  Those that want to power anything else while on the move can just swap that for a twin usb socket.

Hope this helps.

Use a Thinkware F770 2 Channel (front and rear) with hard wire kit. I drive with a hard top hence rear cam. No problems to date, good quality video, easy to use and editable settings using phone app and a WiFi connection. Cost £249.00.

It's really quick and easy to download a clip (or part of) to your smartphone via Wi-fi using the app too.

Agree with the conspicuity of it though.

Front and rear facing cameras
Turns on and off with car (lighter)
Continual loop record with a tremble sensor which saves a window of video either side of an impact.
Had for 2 years now and working fine.

I went for the Apeman A80 in the end.  Has all the usual features and a screen but small enough to mount almost behind the mirror.  cheap as deep fried sliced potatoes too.

Thanks all, for the input.  Doubtless this thread will go on.....

This one has me intrigued as I'd love to have a dashcam that doesn't have to be installed and removed constantly...

Fitted this dashcam today, purchased because it's difficult to spot and bonded to the screen so no one can lean in and pinch it!. I'll post a video from the camera later.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170825/e4173172d877b40eb83d35e077f78464.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170825/34c98d6765351dce37504bbe9997cae4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170825/0582519e0db02c3a2dacec08125325ad.jpg)

Well decided to replace my ageing dashcam and went for the Yi after the recommendations on here.

Plan to swap the camera between my 2 cars so got 2 mounts and cables.

Its fine in the 2, but have a problem in my other car, as it affects the DAB radio in it, completely stopping the signal on it. I've tried turning the wifi off on it which does help a little, but it still cuts out in anything but a good signal area (which is everywhere to be honest!)

Obviously, the solution is not to listen to DAB, but just wondering if anyone had come across this and had a solution?

How are you powering the Yi in your other car?

In my Mini, the SJ4000 I've got is hardwired and not a problem for DAB. However, my little cigarette lighter usb plug causes DAB to cut out if I plug a phone into it for example. Tried a couple of different cig lighter adaptors and same problem so must be something to do with grounding.

Oh I never thought of that! The usb plug that came with the yi didn't work (must try getting replacement off them!) So bought another one and that powers it. Might try  a different one, or as you say sort out a hard wire for it.

Thanks.

In my experience it's not the camera that messes with DAB. It's the wiring, or the cheaper cables. In my daily I've switched the cable for a branded one (Can't remember the brand) and no more issues. I found the hard wired ones had issues with the stop/start in my car so I'm USB powered from a lighter socket now

Have heard about suppressors for the cables too so might try that if the new socket doesnt fix it.

I recently moved my YI from a car without a DAB receiver to one with (in an aftermarket HU) and experienced the same - I assumed it was because I ran the power cable for the Dashcam next to the DAB aerial cable - not got around to re-routing the cable yet to see if it improves things.

It's worth getting a decent USB adaptor too. The cheap ones don't often have the output they advertise. Some only have 1a output, some have 2.4a. The higher amp rating ones are FAR better even if your camera is drawing low amps. Not all that expensive either. I'll find the ones I use and edit in the links

Edit - I only paid about £6 for this one - https://www.amazon.co.uk/MVPower-Chargeur-Allume-Cigare-tablettes-smartphone-Black/dp/B00LXTT2OM/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&qid=1527850994&sr=8-25&keywords=aukey+car+usb

Black is out of stock - but I use this cable too - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JuicEBitz-HEAVY-DUTY-20AWG-Micro-USB-Right-Angle-FAST-Data-Charger-Cable-Lead/272622085300?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=571743385427&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

Fitted to 4 vehicles over the years (And removed from 3, obviously ;) ) and still all working fine (All have DAB which is also fine)

Another thought - is it just the small usb adaptors that have this issue?

If i bought this:

Would that still cause a problem?

On paper it looks good. I don't think I'd trust anything on the 'Slow Boat from China' though. It's really up to you.

My dashcam is on for about 8 hours a day and I keep 30 days of footage on my PC so I'm happy to spend more for the guarantee it will work, and the warranty.

'Orses for courses and all that jazz. I don't think I'd expect a £30 dashcam along with the bundled cables to be all that reliable in the long term, and have the proper shielding (which could be the DAB issue)

Well decided the take @Justin.D (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=24551) advice and get the Aukey charger. ended up with this one:

All I can say is a big thank you, as it has solved the issue. No breakup of DAB on the way to work this morning and camera working.  8) 8) :notworthy: :notworthy:

Just got around to test viewing some footage from the YI cam since I was able to move the mirror a little further out of the way.

The footage quality is far better than my SJ4000 in the other car and if you pause when you're close to a car, even if it's coming the other way, you can read the reg.  That said, presumably given the MR2's lack of ridigity, it's quite bumpy viewing.  Still for £30 it's a bargain.

That does look interesting - for £25, it seems amazing! I'm still on the lookout for one that I can mount behind the rear view mirror fairly silently... ideally no screen and then access the video via WiFi...

Best example of one of these that I've seen: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071ZKVD4S for £70...

Although there's a fairly similar Yi version too: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0792Z4M4Z - dual camera, rear view mirror mounted, WiFi sharing AND has a screen built in... £50 if you apply the voucher...

I've just got the Toguard dual 1080. Front and rear facing with combined coverage of 340°. Very good quality picture. Looks a bit combersome in the pics but the format actually works really well. It sticks flat to the windscreen just behind the rear view mirror and the rear facing camera just pokes up above the rear view mirror. It's easily removable just by sliding it off it's flat mount. I think rear facing footage with the top down should be pretty good as the brightness will be even with the scenery. They were on offer recently and with an eBay 10% voucher I got it for £39 delivered. Will post a photo of it mounted if anyone is interested.

Hi Guys,

Having just got round to fitting the Nextbase 512GW into my Civic, I've been interest to read this thread.

I've taken advantage of Halfords 25% off offer, so cost £119.00 plus hardwire kit, £20, then needed micro blade fuse connector to fit in fuse box, as nextbase didn't include one.

It's left in all the time and after some experience with some less expensive models which stopped working after a few days, i wanted something I could trust and take back to swap if it died on me.

Am looking to add one to the MR2 now i've got the main car sorted, so it's been interesting reading what others are doing.

good to see everyone is wanting to be safe on the roads and catch others that aren't so good around them.

Cheers

What sd card do you have in it Darren? Nextbase recommend Sandisk but there's a lot of stories about missing recordings. I tried one and it's true, it only recorded to half the card, I've got 2 of the other brand now and never had any problem.

I've got a Samsung 128GB Card in (it was one I used to use in my Go Pro - It's a U£ as opposed to a U1 - As for the only recording to an element of the card, I've not noticed that, i'll keep an eye on it though....

As for where to purchase....https://www.7dayshop.com/64gb-micro-sd-cards/filter/uhs-speed-class-3

I find these fast, reliable and offer a good price.

Hope this helps.

I bought a cheap dash cam from Lidl last year for my VW Beetle, and I've got to say it has been excellent.  I paid £34.99, plus it needed an extension for the power cable because the one supplied was too short, and it also needed a micro SD card (cheap as chips these days, obviously).  I think the cable extension was a couple of quid on ebay, and I already had a spare SD card from one of my GoPro's.

The video quality has been excellent, it's at least as good as my other half's Garmin that cost me nearly 4 times as much... The main difference is the Garmin has got loads of advanced functions that are pretty useless, such as lane assist and collision avoidance sensors (both so annoying they were switched off within the first day of use!).  Anyone need a reminder alarm if the car in front moves away and you don't notice...? No, I didn't think so, lol.

The Lidl camera is pretty basic, it just starts recording when you switch the ignition on, and stops when you switch the ignition off.  No links to satellites to indicate the car's speed, no GPS location data, just nice clear video footage with a date and time stamp on it - Sorted!  There are a lot of menu settings for video quality, brightness, contrast etc, but it recorded pretty good quality video clips straight out of the box.  It does have a G-Sensor, so in the event of a crash the current video is automatically saved.  You can also save video clips manually, so they don't get over-written when the recording loops around after the card is full.  The clips are 10 mins each, so it's quite easy to jump to the one you want after they've been downloaded onto a laptop or computer.

The quality of the camera seems to be rock solid, and it was a lot heavier than I was expecting for the price.  The windscreen holder sticks firmly, and has stayed in place behind the mirror for months without any issues  (I don't bother taking it off at night).

I just need to decide what to do now I've got the MR2.  I'll either swap the Lidl one permanently into "Ruby" and get a different one for the Beetle, or maybe I'll treat Ruby to a new one sometime instead.  One thing I won't do is spend £120 on a Garmin again, when I know you can get the job done for a lot less.

Here are a couple of pics, in case anyone is interested:

A quick update to this thread, I've now bought another dash cam (NextBase 212G) and I used it for the first time today, so I can compare it to the Lidl version and give a few comparisons for anyone who's interested.  I decided to swap the Lidl one into the MR2, and use the more expensive NextBase in the Beetle, which is my daily ride.

First impressions are that the NextBase camera is slightly smaller, and weighs a lot less than the Lidl. Neither is "better", they're just different.  The mounting arm and sucker pads are smaller on the NextBase, and the wiring is slightly different.  On the Lidl, the power cable connects directly to the camera, but the NextBase has got a GPS receiver built into the powered mounting arm.  The cable stays with the base, and the camera can simply be popped off if required, which is a much more elegant solution (I normally leave the dash cam in the cars at all times anyway, so this is not really an issue for me).

The video quality is slightly better on the NextBase, although to be fair they are both really good.  It seems to cope with direct sunlight better than the Lidl, which seemed to make the picture too dark when the sun was in front.  Today was overcast but with sunny spells, and the picture quality and exposure was very consistent.

The camera settings and menus are quite similar, but the NextBase has extra information displayed on the video clips, with longitude / latitude / speed / time and date included, whereas the Lidl has no GPS receiver, and only shows time and date stamps.

Installation was pretty easy on both, although the Lidl power cord was too short and needed an extension lead on the Beetle (only a few quid from ebay, so no big deal).  The NextBase power cable was long enough to route around the MR2 with some to spare, so I think that would fit most cars.  The cable routed nicely around the left hand windscreen frame, inside the rubber seal.  It's only visible around the hood clamp, where it makes an appearance for a couple of inches, then disappears again inside the "A" post rubber seal.  (I'll have to be careful not to crush it when I put the hood up...).  I took the glovebox off and routed the cable behind it, fitting in place neatly with cable ties, then while I was in that area I tidied up the horrendous cabling behind the stereo, which was spilling out everywhere (another one of my pet hates! Lol).  The power cable is fitted with a standard cigarette lighter plug, which stays permanently connected.  I will probably hard wire it into the fusebox at some point when I get round to it.  And by that, I mean when my mechanic mate gets round to doing it for me, ha ha!

So, all in all, if I'm honest there's not a lot to choose between the Lidl and NextBase dash cams.  The NextBase was 15 quid more expensive, and on balance I'd say it's probably worth it, just for the GPS functionality, but both do an excellent job.  I hope this has been useful for some of you lot anyway.

Just for completeness, I'll include a few photos, starting with the 2 cameras side by side for comparison:

This is a driver's view of the NextBase fitted to the Beetle.  As you can see, the camera is completely hidden:

Here's a view from the passenger's side:

This is a driver's view of the Lidl fitted to the MR2.  Again, you can see the camera is completely hidden:

And here's the passenger side.  It's not quite as neat as the Beetle, because the camera can't be mounted directly behind the mirror, and sits off to one side:

Pretty pleased with both of them though.  Any questions, just ask.

No problemo, glad to help.  You won't be disappointed, the NextBase an excellent piece of kit for the price.
