Title: New unused 2008 1ZZ engine?? 1ZZ-FE vs 1ZZ-FED Help
Post by: Ozzy on February 14, 2018, 10:03
Hi,

I've been looking for a replacement engine for my MR2 and have found a few decent ones but have a few questions as I've read mixed answers.

- Will a 2008 1ZZ fit straight in? I'm assuming it's from a Corolla/Avensis as it's 2008

- If so, is this 120bhp or are all 1ZZs 140bhp?

- And am I right in thinking that Celica/MR2 has 1ZZ-FED (140) and Corolla/Avensis has 1ZZ-FE (120)?

Thanks.

I would think that once mated to MR2 ECU exhaust etc it would be the same.

If you look at all the vehicles the 1zz FE is fitted to it makes the same power as the FED. The Elise uses the FE I think.

FED was made in a different plant with lighter rods according to Wikipedia.

Read this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_ZZ_engine

Edit:  Not all 1ZZs have vvti - so double check.  I've had both  Japanese and Euro engines apart.  I didn't notice any difference in the rods btw...

You'll probably have to swap all the bits off your old engine (harness manifolds and other bits) to make it compatible.

Also it's still an older used engine, so don't assume it's a good 'un just based on 2008.

That's my confusion. Expect both engines to make the same power once with MR2 ECU and stuff but then it also says some are non VVTI.

I guess my next question is; Is it possible to tell if it's VVTI or not by visually looking at it?

If it's still got the plastic cam cover on top of the engine it will say VVTI on it.... - otherwise you can look to see if it has the control valve in the head. (look for a pic on Google).
Are you capable of doing an engine swap, or would you be paying someone else?  I ask, cos it's often a better bet to rebuild that which you have.  When you add up the cost of taking the engine out, buying another one, and putting it back in, there's not a lot of difference and you'll know exactly what you've got.

Just a thought.

Where are you based?  If near enough to me, I'd be happy to assist in inspection and decision making.  If not, another member may be able to help.

I'll be paying someone to do the swap and too far unfortunatly but appreciate the offer.

I definatly want this engine that I've found if possible because its one of those "once in a lifetime oppertunities" lol.... Amazingly someone has a brand new unused 1ZZ that's never ever been fitted in a car. Never had any fluids in it or anything and best of all, its a bargain. I definatly want it if possible.

Update:
I've spoken to the seller and he said he'll try find out for me tomorrow. Also he's informed me he has 9 more unused ones for £300 each. He's putting listings on ebay soon if anyone is interested.

Did you buy it?  'Cos they're all gone now.

NOPE!  (:< >:)

Seller messaged me shortly after saying someone is interested in buying all of them. Told him I could come that very evening or today but didn't get back to me, so guessing he decided to go with the other offer... Oh well, atleast this keeps my options open.

Damn!  I was so tempted to use the 'buy it now' while it was for sale on Ebay, but I didn't, thinking that you wanted it and would use the 'buy it now'.  He would have had to honour that deal.
So we both lost out.
I did try to buy five of them.  That didn't work either.
Might be worth seeing if you can find out who bought them?

Ebay allows the sellers to pull out of a sale before the end date unfortunatly and sometimes just give a slight decrease in rating if after the sale. I did offer cash in hand aswell to make it more tempting and also asked about who buyer was but didn't reply to either message.

Not end of the world though. Did want to possibly go for more power, ie 2zz but was tempted by it as it was a brand new block. Can easily find and have a replacement 1zz dropped in with 80k-ish miles for around £6-700. Gonna stick with current engine until it dies as running perfectly fine, just burning oil under spirited driving.
