Title: 5th gear issues
Post by: ty222 on November 20, 2023, 16:51
Hi All

Has anyone had an issue with 5th gear where you put it into 5th, it feels like its there, but then theres loads of noise and the car pops back to neutral?

its like its getting 95% into gear, but then it doesnt get all the way maybe. its hard to explain.as soon as you lidft the clutch and apply revs horrible noise like its taking an angle grinder to itself and then pops into neutral.

if i hold it there in 5th the noise is even worse.

5th slightly works before it pops out.

any thoughts would be highly appreciated.

Do you have a five or six speed gearbox?

You may have worn out bushings at the gearbox end of the cables.  If you take the airbox and inlet rubber tube out, you will be able to inspect and get at the bushings. You can also give the exterior linkage on the gearbox a good lubrication with spray lube.

It's also possible that there's problem with the linkage inside the centre console.  If you don't get results at the gearbox end, that would be the next thing to inspect and lubricate.

If all that fails, then it's an internal gearbox issue.

The five speed box is a strong and generally reliable bit of kit.  I bet (hope) that the problem is external to the box.
