Title: How many miles do get on one full tank of Petrol
Post by: Anonymous on June 27, 2005, 11:55
How many miles has have you guys driven on one full tank of fuel.. I've got about 208 miles on one tank using the standard unleaded from Shell.... Also does anyone use the more expensive type of Petrol in their car? If you do how many miles do you on a full tank and do you notice any real differences from the standard unleaded??

I tend to get around 300 miles between fillups. That's using Tesco NUL, commuting to and from work 12 miles each way, with no major runs at the weekends. I think I normally put in somewhere between 35 and 40 litres when I fill her back up again, which is normally somewhere between the bottom line and 1/4 of a tank.

Wow  Hanslow, i suppose you drive really slowly.... and don't have a heavy foot.  How anyone else???

When I was N/A I got around 320 miles, now I am turbo it is at least equal if not better ('normal' driving and motoway as opposed to mental) and around 280~300 when on boost a lot with urban driving thrown in.
Strangely my car has always been really economical, Markiii's isn't anywhere near as efficient as mine when we did comparisons.

I get around 300 miles from a tank and I drive it like I stole it   s:lol:  s:lol:

I was getting around 200, but then I reset the ECU and enjoyed both a more responsive, powerful and increased MPG.

I tend to use brand name normal unleaded (same price as the supermarkets at my usual stations).

Long motorway runs with the roof down, I get about 300 to a tank (that's cruising at about 90ish)..

Roof up or slower (50-60mph up the M1, say) I can get 330-350 to a tank..

Round town, a smidge under 300, I'd say.

Any large figure speeds are km/h, naturally. Cough.

Somebody look up the volume of the tank   s:wink:  s:wink:  and i can do some maths. Always fill up around the 1/4 mark or above.

Since the Unichip (pity I didn't do it before) I have been keeping accurate records, and my overall on Optimax is 32mpg. Has varied between 24 and 36.

Anybody got similar comparisons, don't know if thats good, bad or indifferent   s:oops:  s:oops:

I worked mine out on a couple of long runs (Sheffield & back), and on the slower journeys it came out to about 36mpg, while on the quicker journey about 30mpg.

The tank is fairly small, IIRC..

I usually fill up at around 320miles, though I reckon it'd last another 20 or so.  Last time I worked out the mpg it was just over 37.

I race something from every set of lights and most of my driving is either crawling along in traffic or nailing it down dual carriage ways and I get 30-32mpg which I think is pretty good considering my poor driving.

When  I did Bruntingthorpe I started with just under 3/4 of a tank, drove from Birmingham to Bruntingthorpe(other side of Leicester) 90 mph with roof down, dids loads of laps with the engine screaming in every gear, drove home 90 mph with roof down and still had enough fuel for a couple of trips to work

Yep. Careful though, you will loose all your radio setting as well.

If you have a unichip you just have to flick a switch!
As to milage I tend to bounce around the 280 mark (filling up when just above the redline) although for some reason, on a trip back from sommerset on the bankholiday weekend I managed 345 before filling up. Needle was on the red when I noticed it as I joined the motorway to work. I think the last few miles were done by my sweat alone!   s:shock:  s:shock:

Does resetting the ECU affect the immobiliser at all?

do you have to mess about with putting codes in and stuff, or does it just 'work' when you press lock/unlock on the key?

Ok call me thick if you like.

though let me tell you my situation.. The only thing I've changed on my car is the wheels... (17" if your asking with 205/40/17 in the front and 215/40/17 in the back) and put petrol in the car and drive it.

Can u guys tell me whats a Unichip?? and does my car have an ECU??

Works fine with mine. (a 2000 uk car)

While you have the battery off, you can clean the MAF as well.

Search for Cleaning and MAF should get you the info on how too.

Don't worry, we all start somewhere. The Search button is good if you become stuck on anything.

A Unichip is a programmable chip made by Dastek that "fits" alongside the ECU - provides more power etc.

The ECU is behind the bulkhead, in the passenger cubbie hole behind the seat.

ECU (electronic control unit? possibly   s:oops:  s:oops:  )  takes info from the sensors (like the MAF) and decides how the engine is running and wether to change stuff to make it run better.

Wow technical aren't I. I am sure somone else can come up with a better explanation than me.

Generally ECU means just that, but often the engine ecu is also short for engine control unit.

While that's completely true, I think a simple description would be that it just controls the engine  s;) ;) s;)  Opening injectors, firing spark plugs and stuff  s8) 8) s8)

Never measured the range on the tank, or the mpg. And more to the point, couldn't care less. Thats not why I bought the car.

I use Super Unleaded exclusivley, change the air filter and clean the MAF every 5000 miles, and never have the tank above half full unless going on a long journey, as I'd rather save the weight.

I think the petrol tank capacity is 48 litres (just under 11 imp gallons).

I was quite pleased when I managed 160 miles on 20 litres (the fuel guage was read half full) on my recent trip down thro' France..(autoroutes at about 80-85mph). In total 1750 miles was roughly 230 litres, about 34mpg. That included a fairly lame (but fun  s:lol:  s:lol:  ) night time Ronin moment thro' the tunnels south of Charles De Gaule airport...(want to see/hear the video?)

Running map B all the time my last fill up was 35 litres at exactly 300 miles, the conversion makes it 7.7 gallons which converts to 38.9 mpg  s:shock:  s:shock:  (No! I don't drive like a granny!!  s:wink:  s:wink:  )

I've only been checking out of curiosity, since I fitted the chip it usually returns 34 mpg but I recently took the it out for the last service before it runs out of warranty, that figure is since re-fitting the chip and letting it settle in.

As far as running on map A at Bruntingthorpe goes, I really wish I had filled up at lunch time because it certainly driks at a healthy rate.  When I left the site my fuel light was on and got lost looking for the filling station and ended up back at the airfield  s:? :? s:?   I eventually found one after about 35 miles!!   s:P :P s:P

Depends from the radio  s;) ;) s;)

I used to have a radio with tons of features, like automated volume control, which required you to teach the radio where you idle, what revs you consider low and which high...not to mention setting all the filters, outputs, inputs and whatever.
(and I never even used the radio)

Don't remember where the fuses are, but IIRC they are marked on the inside cover of the boxes.

Just got back from a trip to the Lake District.  The wife and I shared some of the driving on the way up and, over mostly motorway and A road, including some pootling round the lakes (total 280 miles) it averaged, wait for it..........

40 mpg   s:shock:  s:shock:    s:shock:  s:shock:    s:shock:  s:shock:

I thought the fuel gauge had broken as it wasn't far below half with 280 miles on the trip counter lol.  Thats a potential range of 400 miles!!!!  Haven't filled up yet after the return trip (which was done a lot faster with a lot more stationary motorway traffic - how DO people crash on a straight road   s:roll:  s:roll:  ) but it looks like it's done about 35.

Almost makes 87 pence a litre seem bearable.

Having now filled up again, it actually averaged 39.7 mpg over 600 miles - bloody amazing imo.

Re the comment above, it is indeed easier to bear 87 pence a litre when nailing it through the twisties but it would still be nice if we weren't taxed quite so highly on fuel.

How do you know when the ECU resets anyway?
(not just you, but in general)

I've had the battery off for several months twice and it didn't seem like the ECU reset itself. It started just fine and felt just like it used to, as far as I can remember. Same goes for shorter battery removals, I can't see any difference to what it was like before the assumed reset.

But I've had this happen twice now. In both cases the stock ECU has been off car for a year or so, several months anyway, while I've had the PFC in the car. When I put the stock ECU in the car, it pretty much refused to drive during the first 10 mins or so and wouldn't rev past 3000rpm even when floored. Instead it did what I can only imagine of being learning the idle. Bouncing between 500-2000rpm, sometimes slower, sometimes faster. And going VERY low on the revs, lower than it ever does during normal behaviour, even when it's going down enough to make the car vibrate and feel like the engine would stall.

Real reset perhaps?
Title:
Post by: Bongo on July 4, 2005, 11:33
I had a CEL (caused by user error), pulling the fuses didn't clear it, pulling the battery did.

The butt dyno noticed better performance after this and MPG improved aswell. Previous attempts with fuses led to no such gain.

I do a lot of miles so have to watch my fuel bill (one of the main reasons for buying the 2 - good fun and good mpg). I live in the country so don't do any town or motorway miles:

most litres at fillup was: 387
highest mpg was: 39.9
lowest mpg: 34
average mpg over 10k miles: 36.88

Altogether, I am very happy with the result.

I suppose that at 40mpg the '2 should be easily able to pass the 400 mile mark on a tank.

with a PE turbo and a usually heavy foot i do around 200 miles till the point the yellow light comes on, but on hughway drives that rises to 250 miles. bear in mind i have lead weighted feet   s:twisted:  s:twisted:
