Hi, I've got a "w" plate 70k roadster and when idling the engine has a distinct diesel like rattle.  I haven't noticed any change in performance, but after reading various threads I'm very concerned that the pre cats have disintegrated and are now rattling round my engine!.  The Engine Management light has also come on recently.

Are there any tests I can do before taking it to a garage?  Additionally does anyone know of any good independent specialists in the Cov/Leamington/Warwickshire region as I don't really want to pay £170 p/h labour!

Keep up the good work Guys & Gals!  s:D :D s:D

How is your oil level?

Keep a close eye on it.

If you are worried about the precats, take out the O2 sensors and have a peek at them.

Broken precats don't really make a noise.

The idle diesel sound is most likely a broken belt tensioner. You'll find more info if you search for 'belt tensioner' and choose Search for all terms.  s8) 8) s8)
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

When the engine is warm, give it a good rev, see if it spits unburnt oil out of the exhaust. My roadsters have done this when either suffering precat failure or suffering excessive bore wear.

other test is to remove the 02 sensors and see if the precat matrix is still there (Search for "precats" for more info)

good Luck,

Richie.

when you say diesel like "rattle" wouldnt be a loose heatshield type rattle would it? but as suggested before check oil level and check tops of precats first of all.

I think there is a MR2 specialist in Kenilworth.

I met one of the founders of  w www.mr2oc.com w  at the motorcycle museam a few months back and she mentioned it.

I did plan to take mine there and get the pre cat's removed one day but still have not found what the place is called yet!.  Im also not sure if they specialise in MR2 Roadsters either though.

Silverstone Performance is not too far away, and they charge £45 per hour (+ VAT).
