Hi Guys, Im a bit lacking in the knowledge of cars so I was hoping if anyone could tell me what could possibly be wrong with my mr2.  s:oops:  s:oops:   Its a japanese import with manual transmission (with a clutch), and just recently, the engine light lit up when you would hit 90-100kph and would stay on until you turned the engine off. It runs and sounds fine otherwise. I had the car serviced and they said they couldnt find anything wrong with it but said I might need to take it to a specialist mechanic to get it checked out.   s:( :( s:(  Any ideas??? cheers

Not sure what the problem is, but any Toyota dealer will be able to cennect to the car and download the CEL code - this will tell you exactly what the problem is.

Not sure what the setup is in OZ, but in the UK the dealers are unable to read the codes from J-Spec cars. There are a few people who have the necessary kit in the UK (Rogue found one in Coventry recently) but they are few and far between.

The reason the light clears when you switch the engine off is probably a third party imobiliser (none fitted as std on J-Spec) that interupts power to the ECU - same problem that Rogue also experienced.

Basically, try taking it to your local Toyota dealer, and asking them to connect their diag kit to the car whilst the engine is running and the CEL light is illuminated.

Good luck.

PS. Little bit of background on OZ Roadster's - the reason 'DownuderMR2' is specific about this being a manual transmission car is that the manual 'box is NOT available as a domestic import in Australia - only the SMT.

Resurrecting an old thread.....

Normally my advice to anyone with a CEL would be "get it read"..... so I apologise in advance for trying to dodge this rule.

....but here I am with a J-Spec car, a CEL that clears every time I restart, a diary thats set to bursting point and a European driving trip around the corner   s:? :? s:?   I need your help with some intelligent pointers please.

Ever since the run to Dyno Day I've had a CEL appear about 5 mins into a journey. Its not boost-related and can happen under any driving condition.

AFR is stable (albeit a bit rich under boost), and the car runs like a demon with or without the CEL - not missing or obviously knocking/spluttering etc. MAF appears to be MAF'ing OK, TPS appears to be TPS'ing OK. Coolant and Oil are both up to snuff.

The last changes I made to the car prior to dyno day were:

- fitting uprated injectors
- installing turbosmart valve
- remapping idle air correction (was too rich)
- a well overdue gearbox oil change

Might be worth checking the g'box oil level and topping up, although it was up to the fill-hole when I did it. Do we have a sensor that CELs in relation to G'box oil level and/or temperature?

I will try to book in for a reading, but my diary is manic and I've got to book it in to arrive and be ticking over with the CEL otherwise it won't be there. PITA.

Any ideas what I can try during my less cluttered evenings? I'm running out of things to rule out   s:shock:  s:shock:

is it worthwhile going back to how the map was, just in case the new settings are the cause??

I considered this last week, but the only changes I made to Phil's map were at idle - the CEL triggers under uneventful driving conditions (ie not at idle, or lift off, or acceleration, or under boost - just driving along minding my own business).

Still, its worth a try I suppose. Another trip into the garage with the laptop  s:? :? s:?

Maybe something is temporarily "glitching" once the car is warmed up and its so subtle I just don't notice it.

Maybe my O2 has packed up - this would only trigger after warm-up period, right?.....but then AFR is pretty much bob-on, so it must be regulating the ECU OK  s:roll:  s:roll:

yep thats right, the o2 sensors do stuff all at first and the ECU goes into a preset routine for engine management. Afterit warms up the 02 sensors take over and start controlling the emissions

Well go figure......

I reset the ECU last night, recalibrated the wideband (for reference only) and not a CEL in site after 8 stop-start-hacks today  s:roll:  s:roll:

Idle is perfect at 14.7AFR. Boost is still a tad too rich like before, but now the AFR at low revs has come rich too!!

Do you think maybe my N'band O2 is on its last legs? Do these things bottle out a bit before they pack up completely?

Sorely confused

anythings possible with these type of sensors. it could even have been some bad fuel, i'd monitor it and perhaps even get a new o2 in preparation, just in case
