Was browsing MWR and saw the TRD Thermostat. The description is:

QuoteTRD's 160 degree thermostat keeps your engine running cooler for better power and more protection from detonation/pinging. This means you can run more timing, run leaner, and run more boost without risking dangerous detonation

Sounds good. Has anyone used one before? Do you think it makes a difference? Other than slower warm up, what would the disadvantages be?

I dont know the TRD one specificaly.

But a thermostat is usualy like a diaphram and a spring wich opens more as it gets hotter to allow more flow.

Possibly it opens  at a lower temperature or a bit quicker?

At a lower temperature usually for this type of "performance" modification

So by opening sooner its keeping the engine running at a lower operating temperature. Would the temperature drop have a significant effect on knock and timing as described above or is it just BS?

I have one and yes, it makes a difference.

And it actually warms up faster than stock. Just because the target temp is lower, so it takes less time to reach it.

But like Mark said, if you drive on winter, you might not wanna do this. It's great on a summer toy though.
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.
