I'm looking to buy an mr2... just once i get this damn credit sorted...
It will be a 2001-2002 registered model.

I'm concerned about previous posters who say the red paint will fade. As I have no garage to store it in, thats going to affect me.

Is this true, Is there any way to stop it fading?

As someone who has owned red cars in the past, both Classic 70s, and modern, I can tell you that red does go pink eventually when exposed to uv light.

Classic cars used to have lead in the paint and that is why it tended to happen less in the past.  As someone who used to get involved in restoring cars as a hobby, I have this information on reasonable authority.  My old Triumph is restored and I keep it in a garage, partly to avoid light damage, as lead is now banned from paint.

It's a great shame as red is the best colour for showing a car's lines, but check out any mk1 mr2s or old escorts out there to see the worst effects.

BTW, all colours fade, but red is worst affected.

Though i can except that any paint may fade or weather to the elements, modern paints take a lot longer to display these signs, plus the clear coat used on most cars offers some levels of protection.

Even buying a car a couple of years old, i don't think you would see any loss in colour in the time you owned it, unless you were planning on keeping her for years and years.

Nothing that a good clean and wax won't help to protect too, another cleaning tip is to use UV blocker on the black plastic parts on the car to avoid them going grey over the years. Don't think i would recommend applying this to the paint though  s;) ;) s;)

I have no garage, so the car is outside all the time. Mine's a 2000 and I can't see a difference in paint color compared to new Yaris with same 3P0 red. Maybe it will fade in the next 5 years, maybe it won't...it's probably time to overpaint by that time anyway  s8) 8) s8)

So either the red paint is better than Toyota used a decade or so ago, or Autoglym is doing a good job protecting it  s8) 8) s8)
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

Excellent, thanks for the advice.

I don't really want to look like a flash Get, but mr2 in red *is* luscious. Like Mr Turbo says, it is very complimentary to the lines of the mr2 - which can look pretty ugly at times. Sable is just as good, and is tempting me to stretch for a new car instead....
... hmm a new car, 3yrs warranty, for, say, £19k at a broker (ac+hardtop+leather), vs 3yrs old, for £12k.

You should be able to get a new one with that spec for at least a grand cheaper than that
