Another ariel problem

I have just fitted a new mast after the old toothed wire broke up.
The fitting was straight forward but now when the mast goes up the motor carries on grinding away until its "time out" arrives.

The mast is OK going down. The motor stops as soon as the mast is fully retracted.

I thought that the motor cut off as soon as it felt some resistance i.e. the mast won't go any further.

I have read the bit about burning the end of the wire but I feel the motor will continue to run even if the plastic lump is there.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.
