After pm'ing one of the mods we thought a thread to monitor my turbo build would be a good idea – actually it's more than to 'monitor' it's me throwing myself on the mercy of the club, as a mechanical noob and gathering advice long the way. I have read as much of the information on Turbo Builds as I can, and now it's time to get things moving, and I am really looking to tap the collective knowledge of the club.

I bought some basics, over a year ago, to start a turbo build. I am looking for (a) help so I know what else I need to purchase, and after I've purchased the rest of the gear (b) some advice while I assemble.

I am not handy with a spanner beyond the very basics, such as changing brake discs and pads, but I want the challenge of putting it together myself.

So this is the list of gear I have presently:

1.   Uprated clutch (already fitted professionally).
2.   Garrett GT 28r
3.   Intercooler
4.   Moroso oil pan
5.   Cast Manifold
6.   Injectors (380cc)
7.   Greddy Emanage & Profec E 01 boost controller
8.   Emanage harness
9.   Dump Valve (BOV)
10.   Nord lock washers
11.   Dash Pod for gauges (52mm)
12.   Nissan gasket set for Turbo
13.   Oil feed restrictor
14.   Torque app for android
15.   EGT, Boost, Oil Pressure and Temp Gauges
16. Manifold Bolts from Mr T

This is what I think I need in addition to the above:

1.   Bolts turbo to manifold
2.   Engine Mounts (Kirk mounts?)
3.   V Band 3 inch or 2.5 inch?
4.   Boost Pipe
5.   Gasket for manifold?
6.   Induction kit
7.   Flouro lined oil lines
8.   O2 Sensor resistor
9.   Downpipe/Exhaust
10.   Liquid Gasket Oil Pan
11.   Oil guage fitting  t piece
12.   Heat Wrap
13.  Resistor to join O2 sensors

So thanks in advance to anyone willing to weigh in on the conversation. My overall aim is a reliable fun car - and I am shooting for 200 bhp or thereabouts.

My first question is - which gauges? I am thinking oil temp, oil pressure and exhaust gas temp, with boost being provided by the profec e01.

I am looking for reasonable priced gear (not so cheap it is not reliable, but not spending more than is necessary). So cost is a consideration.

So which gauges and where to buy? (I was looking at evo digital gauges, but have read they glare in daylight.)

Also if someone wants to step in and offer any advice on mechanical versus digital...

i think you can easily push past 200bhp reliably with that list.

I have oil temp, oil pressure and boost, all 3 are very useful as the oil gauges tell me when the car has properly warmed up so I can give it some   s:D :D s:D
I bought some mid priced stepper motor gauges I think they were around £150 for the 3. And they light up white in the day and red at night.. Really bright and easy to read.
These.

I used a oil filter sandwich plate for the turbo feed and oil gauges. Bit easier to work with than t-pieces.

Don't forget you need a inlet pipe post turbo with a maf fitting. Pre turbo is a nightmare to setup on the emanage, I couldn't get mine to tick over properly. The air is completely different after the turbo and intercooler, so the maf likes being last before the throttle housing. Then the stock ecu sorts out the tick over properly on its own.

Where are you going to fit the intercooler?  This will obviously dictate what boost pipes you need.  It gets very hot in the engine bay, you may be better with a water-air charge cooler.  I know they aren't as efficient but in a mid engine car it seems like a better solution.

If your anywhere near me you can come and see how my intercooler and turbo are plumbed in.
Much neater than other solutions i have seen.
Also i think you'll easily make 200bhp. Careful not to make too much torque and fry the gearbox.

Pahh, gearboxes are cheap... Torque is fun, (although I do think I've broken something..my gearbox makes a new noise when changing down gears ...opps)

I'm quite happy to bet that your setup is pushing both engine and gearbox past their limits. You need some forged bits and an s54/e153 box.

Yeah I know but I'm putting in a new engine (or rebuilding mine) after summer and will get it properly set up on a rolling road.
But for now it's good fun and I've no idea what it's pushing.. But I showed my mate up today, he has a 320bhp Impreza

And I have RAC   s:lol:  s:lol:

Depends on the type of BOV - The e-manage/ECU handles a recirc valve with the MAF pre-turbo without any drama. With a vent to atmos valve you effectively introduce a huge leak in the intake pipe when the MAF is pre-turbo.

Che cast iron - as far as I am aware.

Thanks to all have replied - I will return to the various considerations and points that have been made, e.g. MAF position.

Scotte - unfortunately I'm way up north, get to the Scottish border and just keep on trucking! So I will decline your kind invites. But as time goes on I might pester you for some pics?

Lee Gauges look good - I'm still toying with the idea of an EGT though.

So any further opinions on an EGT gauge?

Cheers

I was in Scotland a few weeks ago. Always a chance it could happen again.
If anyone up there has an SP turbo kit i would recommend you take a peek.
Very nicely packaged.

I think the closest person with any type of turbo'd MR2 is about 3 hours south of me - though I'd be delighted to learn otherwise.

If you do end up in my neck of the woods give me a shout.

Gauges now bought and original post edited to suit.

I agree the chargecooler is a better solution - but I have a Precision Intercooler, and would rather see how I get on with that for the time-being.

I would rather not have my intercooler at the bottom of the car as I live at the end of a steepish country track that can be quite unforgiving of lower hanging bits of cars.

However, I might run an intercooler at the bottom with a scoop and if that does not work,  (cooling and ground clearance).move onto a chargecooler thereafter - if I do this can I leave room to position a chargecooler at a later date?

Anyone running a turbo, successfully with an intercooler want to weigh in with some advice?

I'll get some pictures for you.
Mine is on the passenger side, just inside the nappy. Hole cut to supply airflow.

no worries - the title of the thread is world's slowest turbo build - I'm in not in an extreme hurry.

The Americans have mounted them at the back over the exhaust. Not that I think its a good idea but might help you to look at spyderchat. Where in Aberdeenshire?

So I got distracted...  s:roll:  s:roll:

Anyway - turbo brace, is it necessary?

If so, does anyone have a template, I seem to remember seeing one somewhere.

Thanks in advance

Wow not finished yet?

Turbo brace.
If you have a cast manifold i would think not.
If you have stainless or similar then i would think you will.
