Another interesting progression in the life of Jack.

Since bypassing the boost control solenoid, it's been running significantly better.

Ever the skeptic, today I let it warm up and got some readings on it. Not sure how I never noticed this but timing advance at idle was 25deg... that's rather over spec.
I added a few PIDs to Torque to read misfires and misfire advance degrees.

I revved the engine to 3.5k-ish a few times and looked at the screen.. 5 misfires.  Well damn.
Reset the counter and revved it again... 3 misfires.

Heart sunk... ."NOW WHAT?!?!"

No codes. No fuel leaks from injectors. Nothing at first glance.
Then I remembered the spark plug ordeal a few months back. I was never comfortable with it running the BKR7E plugs. Not when other TTE/SP240 members were using BKR6E.
But we got BKR6Es and the car just stumbled and stalled all over the place. So put some new BKR7Es in and put the 6s in mine. All seemed fine.

Decided to give it another try. Pulled the 6s out of mine, put new BKR5Es in (as per stock spec) that I had in the garage. Took the 7s out of Helen's and put the 6s in.
Connected battery and fired her up.
No issues. In fact...quieter. Much quieter. Revved it. No misfires. Revved it harder. No misfires. Sounds more like a stock 1zz now. The deep heavy rumble is gone.
Took it out for a spin. Smooth. So smooth.

WHY THE F*** DID IT HAVE BKR7E plugs in?!??!

So far we've had a blocked 200 cell cat, replaced with a new one
2 dead o2 sensors
1 brittle and finally snapped wastegate hose
Loose bolts on turbo to cat pipe causing leak and dodgy o2 readings post-cat.
Duff MAF (tried the old one in my car after a clean. Didn't check maf reading because I'm an idiot, but fueling went sky high).
Colder plugs than necessary

The good news is...it's running more and more like a proper 1zz turbo. We'll get there. There's not a hell of a lot left is there?  s:) :) s:)

Youve have had a bad run of luck, hopefully more of the good luck coming your way now.
Are you running boost controller yet?

The second part is right on the money about ramping up dealer charges!

I've bitten the bullet and Saturday I dropped the car off at AK Automotive. Patrick went there for his wheel alignment and they're kind of the place to go around here for M X 5 work. Yes I know, I said it. Shame on me. But they do tons of engine builds and build race cars so we decided it was worth a shot.

So far they've been great!
Dropped the car off 3pm Saturday and got a call today at 1:30 to discuss the first findings.

We've fixed tons on the car that wasn't right, mostly from it standing on wasteland unused for so long, but the big issue turns out to be the ECU.
They found no obvious mechanical issues at all besides some small oil leaks which they will fix.
They plugged in the boost solenoid, took it for a good drive and measured stuff using complicated equipment stuff and it all works as it should, but the ECU is telling the car to be silly.
Needs a remap. Why?!

Any suspicions we had about the car having been tinkered with has been confirmed. It has definitely had a remap, and most likely for different parts that were taken off the car before it was sold to me.

So, getting prices now for a standalone ECU and getting it mapped how I like it.

Oil leaks were from an aged oil return feed and the sump seal. All else given the thumbs up.

They work mostly with MegaSquirt and Emerald K6 ECUs for their customers' MX5s/Evos/etc and their own Ginettas are running MegaSquirts as well.
Waiting for their quotes. Fingers crossed it's somewhat friendly.

Great news Guys.

Hope you get him back soon in full health.

Shame you are missing full boost with the current driving conditions eh?

It's a shame someone chose to sell you a car with suspect tune.
Glad you are getting it sorted.

Bigger turbo and a charge cooler too? ;p

Hopefully they will be in touch today with a price to sort it all out. I was really disappointed to find out that the map is the issue, I was hoping for it to be something small and cheap (nee chance) once we've got that sorted in will start saving up to add extras to it.
Jason, hopefully it will be running a lot better by ding day next year so we can have a spin

Thankfully Simon we have no snow here, it's pretty icy but nothing like what you have. Mr2 weather it is not!

To give the benefit of the doubt, it's wholly possible the seller didn't know as it was the previous owner that did funny stuff with it.
And not enough not-so-funny stuff with it, like driving it  s:) :) s:)

Wouldn't it be easier to just get your ecu mapped correctly?

Garage just called;
- sump removed, cleaned and resealed
- oil return pipe replaced
- waiting for oil filter to arrive; "The Big Freeze" strikes again....unbelievable.. and then fresh oil and fire it up
- alignment fixed. Some odd camber on the nearside front sorted (not sure how)
- MegaSquirt and Emerald not advised. The MegaSquirt has VVT, but can be a bit of an arse to get running with the 36-2 and 3-1 triggers on the crank and cam shafts, along with the kind of injection it has. Then there's the fact that it'd have to be run in-line with the existing ECU. Syvecs advised but not gone into because we'd be talking over 2k. So final conclusion was (as above) get it remapped and that should solve the problems. They also recommended getting an eManage Ultimate instead, if anything just to be able to allow access to more tuners while losing very little in the way of functionality (if any).

So, next port; remap or find EMUltimate, put a base map on myself and get it power mapped by a pro on dyno with boost control (either in EMU or via external boost controller).

I Have an EMU, P&P 1ZZ harness and the required boost sensor if you want to borrow them for testing porpoises? Can't do anything till the new year tho as its in the UK and I'm off to Finland for Christmas tomorrow

It would help for sure, but only because we'd have to get it mapped. But might as well spend that money mapping the stupid Dastek  s:) :) s:)

Glad to see it getting sorted.

Did you find someone local to map?

Decided for remap. Most likely from RA Motorsport in Perth.
The cost of a standalone (2000+) just isn't something I want to spend.
I know it's better, but plenty Sp240s out there running my ecu just fine.

So, as Steve says, a good map will sort it out. But I don't want it to be running full boost permanently. 240 is too much, most of the time. I want it to be as it is now, but without issues.

It will get a map selector thing so I can choose.

See what else they recommend at RA and go from there. Now to book a weekend away to get it done.

If you do go for a map selector see if they can sort you a viable map for 95 Ron fuel.
I know most places do it these days but sometimes you get caught out.
Can come in handy.
