Starter Motor Wire Guage

Looking at my battery terminals the negative has 2 wired going to it and the positive also has 2 wires going to it.

Can anyone tell me what guage wire is used? it looks like 8 guage to me but my local audio shop swears that a starter motor shoudl use a 4 guage cable.

Anyone help?
