Remove centre stereo supports

Has anyone removed the two uprights where the stereo and ashtray fit?

I'm guessing he means taking the whole pillars off and leaving them off? I'm assuming that's not the best idea but I'm sure someone else will update in due course.

Thats along the lines of what i meant ,although replacing with something else ?
