Went to Powerhouse Garage to get my new Che manifold fitted and the old precat manifold removed. They did the work in four hours and said they would be more than happy to do the job again for anyone else on this forum, including whether you just want your manifold gutted, and they'd offer a 10% discount on labour charges for everyone on the forum.
The guy I spoke to was a really nice chap called Colin Hillier. His contact number is 01276 25566.
He removed my old manifold, fitted the new one, did a full emissions test and included a print out, together with my old manifold and charged me £157.30 inc VAT.
He said gutting a precat shouldn't take much longer, and providing the job went the same as mine (few niggly bolts shearing etc but nothing major) the charge would be the same, plus the 10% discount.
So if you're in the Surrey area, scared or unable to gut your precats yourself and want a reliable company to do it for you, here's the answer!

He removes the pre-cats and changes the oil (5-30) and filter all for £112 he's getting really good at it after doing more than 4 members cars.
We are now in a position to offer a modified exhaust manifold (i.e. one with the pre-cat material removed) on an exchange basis.
Total cost £145.45 inc VAT
This includes labour, new (genuine) gaskets and nuts and an exchange manifold. Any additional parts or labour required over and above this will be chargeable.

Thanks for the tip-off re the dreaded pre-cats...I've found a reliable mechanic prepared to get them out and he did it a couple of days ago - happens to be the brother of a good friend!
If anyone else wants it done (e.g. Helen whom I followed into Kuoni HQ to warn about the prob), call him - he now knows how to do it and apparently already looks after several car at Kuoni! He's Mark Jaques ('Jakes') - his company name is Motorcure, is based in Capel, south of Dorking, tel. 01306 712825. Cost to me was 105 plus 31 for gaskets, no VAT. Well worth it!
All seems fine - no added noise - good job I trust him or I'd wonder if he'd done it at all!

After I had my tracking/camber sorted at this garage my car developed a squirming issue - I took it back to the garage and he couldn't find what was wrong. After 5 minutes of Spit looking at it he discovered a loose bush nut on the rear toe adjustment arm - bearing this in mind I wouldn't trust this garage to touch my car again!

Big thanks to Nathan @ mrtwos for gutting my pre-cats today. My 04 reg only has 20,000 on the clock and the pre-cats were in good condition, but better safe than sorry so i've done the decent thing and had them gutted.
I'm sure theres a few people on here who want theres done so the cost is £60. I've also painted my manifold cover up whilst it was off, so the engine looks new again!

As others have already mentioned, Nathan at Mr Twos in Willenhall (not far from Birmingham/Wolverhampton) will take out the precats for you. I booked a time to go see him last week and, on arrival, he put the car straight on to the ramp and got on with the job. 100 minutes later and after breakfast in a cafe down the road, I drove away and it only cost £50 - well worth the 150 mile round trip from home and he was also a pleasure to do business with. Interestingly, on inspection, Nathan found that one side had started to break up but nothing had been 'ingested' so it would seem that I got there just in time. Apart from twin Janspeed SS exhausts, the car is a bog standard 51er that has only done 11K miles (and, yes that is genuine!). Nathan can be contacted on 07812 506772 for anybody interested and I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Maidstone Sports Cars (http://www.maidstonesportscars.co.uk/home.asp) might do it for you. Mainly MG and Lotus specialists but they fixed a problem on mine once (not precats though - did those myself). Probably not the cheapest either.
Farleigh Forge garage in East Farleigh do my servicing at pretty decent labour rates. They might take it on if you give them the instructions from here.

hi i have just joined your club after meeting a couple of you guys yesterday at anglesey circuit . luckily i only live two miles from the track , i popped down to see what cars where at the track day and i was glad to see all the roadsters.i was even more happerier as i had just became a very proud owner of my 2000 roadster .my car has just done 63000 miles and a couple of you guys said have you had your pre cats out yet .one or two you helped me examine my car to see if i had the cats out by removing the 02 sensors . sure enough the cats were still in place and seemed to look ok .
then my halloween nightmares begun after looking on your site when i got home . and reading about engines blowing up etc.
so my question is do you now any reputable garages in north wales / north west to rip my pre cats out.i do 80 miles a day to and from work and the miles will soon ad up and to stop my nightmares i wont to get this job done asap . my car is not using any oil atall so fingers crossed every thinks tickety boo at the moment . i do have a good local garage but i would prefer using a garage that has a good knowledge of the job.
i am pretty handy at s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce: fixing bits and bobs on cars but its sods law that half the bolts wont come out for me . and i live a bit to far from any garages if i cock it up .

If no one can recommend a garage your best bet is one of the little independant garages, print off the "how to" and go round a few, show them it and ask for a quote.
If you are gutting and not replacing the header, make sure they understand the importance of getting all the material out and the manifold cleaned inside.
Cost will depend on the difficulty in getting your manifold off, worth having the replacement gaskets and studs etc to hand, i believe ctp in the affiliates section has put together a kit for this.
Just had my precats removed by Sportomotive Service in Salisbury 01722 410893
They also changed discs and pads all round for me at the same time for £180 all in, I supplied new EBC discs and pads so very pleased.
Incidentally got my MR2 back in August 2009, have done 16,000 miles since, it hasn't used any oil at all and the precats were totally intact so I guess maybe some duff ones around !
I have a warranty from the Toyota garage so wasn't in a hurry to whip them out but you do get paranoid with all the precat issues others have had.

Interestingly he had done one the day before where the owner had had precat failure in the past. The car was on a replacement engine fitted with a brand NEW Toyota manifold. Even though the car hadn't done many miles since the old engine was replaced the Precat was showing signs of beginning to break down

You've got Silverstone Performance and Rogue Motorsport who are in the Warwick area, both are 100% top notch garages, as for manifolds, Che's already being mentioned but you've also got Zero & H&S who make a better more up market manifold for about £360.

I rang Japtech, a local Jap car specialist to ask if they had experience of this and they mentioned that although they had heard of removing the precats they have never seen the need to and they questioned why on earth I would want to do it!
Might be a jap car specialist, but they obviously know little about the roadster. Get em out! Print off the "how to" and take it into a local garage you trust.

I did just this. The precats were in good nick but the manifold was a bit of a bugger to shift and the total job took 4 hours. As I've just bought the car (a 2001 model) with 60K on the clock and a bit of a sketchy service history I had them do a few other bits and bobs to get it just right. All in all a very professional job and a good set of blokes - I can thoroughly recommend them:

Right then. Very happy with our new purchase and hopefully it will be a long term relationship. I suspect the best way to ensure this is to get those pre cats out before they do something nasty. I've been in contact with Advanced Autocare and they quoted £70 + vat to do the job. They're North of Doncaster and I'm in Huddersfield so they said they would do the job while I wait. Part of the excellent service is they will taxi you to the retail shopping park where there is a big Asda and cafe to keep you entertained during the two hours that it takes to do the job!
I did enquire locally at an independent exhaust fitter in Huddersfield and although he'd never done on before he said he'd be able to do it for £100 + vat.
I wondered if anyone knew of anyone more local to me in the Huddersfield area that could do the job at a comparable price to Autocare.
Alternatively I do keep wondering about having a go myself however it's the rusted nuts/bolts/studs concern that does rather put me off. I have bought a can of Plusgas which I'm going to start applying for either outcome as it's bound to make anyone's job a lot easier.
Just one more thought. If there's anyone on here who could do it I'd be happy to reward them for their work and maybe even help and see how it's done.

Well I've just done mine and I have fairly crap mechanical skills. Either way you need to buy the lower ring gaskets from toyota as these can't be re-used. I also bought a new manifold gasket too. Both cost £20 from Mr T. I was quoted £50 labour locally to get mine done and to be honest I spent nearly that much on tools to go DIY on it! Still for me I was more worried that local garage would not get all the material out and end up knackering the engine and the tools never go a miss! I had no trouble with nuts except for the bottom three manifold nuts. So if you want to have a go try those first. Still with patience, a hot engine, plusgas and a breaker bar they came off.
Thanks for the reply. The good thing about Autocare is that they know the procedure very well and they seem to get quite a bit of business by their name being mentioned on here. So basically I have no worries about them doing the job and in the end we got an excellent car for only £3100 so we've still quite a lot of our 'fun' budget left to pay for someone else to do the job.
Did the shortish journey over to Advanced Autocare this morning for the pre cats taking out. Mark did the work and part of the service was him taking me the short journey into Carcroft where I entertained myself for two hours. A bit of this was at the large Asda where they have a good selection of magazines to read. I then had a little explore in the town and found the library where I read several books to pass the time. The best was the Jeremy Clarkson book on vehicles with soul. Basically Flying Scotsman, Rolls Royce, Boeing 747, Concorde, Space Shuttle etc etc. Very interesting though and I learned many things about all the subjects.
Two hours late I walked back to find my car de catted and ready to go. Saw all the potentially dangerous material in the bin just to confirm the job had been done. Apparantly one thread had caused some trouble but with the right tools it had been sorted.
Anyway, it's good to know that this particular problem is sorted so we can get on using the car without that particular worry.
Just for interest, Skirmish, what did it cost please?
£70 plus another £14 in vat making £84 total. They charge £35/hour however they have now just increased that to £37.50. Fortunately I got my quote before the price hike.

@jinxedkitten. Just a day in the garage. From memory an hours labour. I gave them new gaskets to fit from Toyota just to be sure s:) :) s:)
Blue Streak in Northampton - removed the pre cats along with fitting the new front struts for the princely sum of £125.00 - pre cats where £55.00 which is a good price. I was quoted £120.00 just to do the struts by two other garages i know! This included replacing two snapped studs in the Manifold.
The work is excellent, no marks on my freshly painted wheels and the car drives perfectly. Sounds slightly deeper as well - Result!
Based on this i would thoroughly recommend them to anyone in the Northampton area, he knows his MR2's inside and out.

Another big up for Nathan at Mr Two's in Willenhall (07812 506 772) who did a superb job of gutting the pre cat as well as fitting new O2 sensors that I gave him - and all for £50. Worth the hour and a half drive via Leominster to get the work done by someone who really knows what he's doing.

That's odd, I have been using Blue Streak for the last 2 years to service all out cars including the MR2, they removed the pre cats on our car. He has done all the work on it and has always charged a fair and honest price, he reads any fault codes for free instead of charging which is a nice thing to do.
Pretty sure the guy who runs it is called Richard, he is usually good at returning calls. I will give him a buzz today and see what the score is. I hope to god he hasn't gone out of business as it is the only place i trust.

Well just returned to the MR2 fold after having a MK2 a few years ago and after dismissing the MK3 years ago given the "lower bhp" (I was ignorant to power to weight ratio at the time!!).
I have to say I'm more than impressed, however first job is to have the precats removed (if they aren't already) I'm considering ordering a stainless manifold at about £130. But can anyone advise a good garage in the South Yorkshire area that you have trusted with your 2?
I'll also be having a service including new iridium plugs, as it's due and I can see me possibly having to have one of the lambda sensors replaced as I think theres a slight misfire. With my usual garage which I use for the Jag (chalk and cheese I know) I normally buy all the service parts myself and just pay for the labour.
Grateful for any recommendations as I need to get everything in order sharpish, the 2 is really tormenting me just sitting outside.

Just had the pre cats done by Andy from Bonzai Car Services in Weston Super Mare: m http://www.bonsai-wsm.com (http://www.bonsai-wsm.com) m (07885 22 77 29).
He did the job with no issues and renewed the gaskets too, all for £60.
Some of the nuts were a bit tight but nothing a heat gun and WD 40 can't sort out. I was recommended him by Alex Knight, and I have to say he does seem to know his stuff. If you need any sort of mechanical work doing I would give him a call!

Servicing and maintenance work you do no wrong than to use Roys motor company mate, sprowston road , have used them to service my Lexus and all my toyota's always a superb job and not ripped off. Been using them for last twenty plus years. Not sure if they would remove the precats but I done mine myself and took me two hours and cost £16.40 for a new manifold gasket. Give Ian at Roys a ring and ask him. If he not sure he can always give me a call and I will tell him what I did.

Having decided to finally remove pre-cats as i bought her at 80,000K and she is by no means a young girl anymore. I can recommend Oatlands Garage in Harrogate.
Been using them for years and not only removed pre-cats, but spotted that gasket was going, so replaced that as well.
Will update with price when I get the invoice. At least I don't have that nagging feeling that my engine is going to destroy itself now. s:D :D s:D

For ideas have a look via "search" there is a lot of info on here.
If you are seriously contemplating starting diy on your 2 this would be a good opportunity.
If you are tool less ( as well as clue less, your suggestion !) What you would pay a garage to de cat the manifold would pay for a starter set of tools and the necessary Plus Gas, gaskets and replacement nuts and possibly studs.
You will also then have truly joined the ranks of the ROC and have gained the tools and some confidence to do other jobs yourself.
Ok well I'll keep looking then. I'll have a good look through some of the topics. I would love to give this a go myself, but I also wouldn't like to mess up my nice new (to me) car.
I'll have a read around first.

There is very little room to mess up your car. Everything you need to work with to do this is solid metal. There are two things that can happen:
1) you break the bolts or brackets that hold the top heat shield in place. End of world? No... Just buy 10 quid of manifold wrap.
2) you have to cut off bolts because they're rusted/rounded. End of world? No... Buy a few new bolts s:) :) s:)
Costs are: time, tools (if you have none), new gaskets, and plusgas. Possibly new bolts/nuts as required.
But you gain: a de-pre-catted manifold, heaps of experience and confidence in working with the car, a renewed sense of patience, and possibly some shiny new tools s:) :) s:) It's wins all around really.
The biggest risk is snapping / rounding a stud in the head.

Done mine myself straight forward and only cost was new exhaust gasket. Not sure where you are in Suffolk but my mate Ian at Roys motor Company Norwich (Independant toyota dealer ) has said they have done them before. Norwich can,t be to far for you.

I had my precats removed last August by Andrews Motor Engineers at Beverley, East Yorkshire for £95. The job took around 2-3 hours and I would recommend them to anyone as they have experience of removing MR2 precats.

Happy to help as always. Just a quick note for anyone doing their own pre cat removal. Less you have to undo the better. Dont bother removing the manifold. Undo the 3 14mm nuts. Plug the exhaust so nothing falls into it and carefully chisel out the cat material. You can always remove the sensors if you are worried about damaging them. Damn itchy stuff when you get it all over you! Naturally easier to do on a ramp but still doable on axle stands. Good luck.

Maybe for a garage/professional, but for advice for the DIY'er on here I'd say don't even go there. You only need a small amount of precat to be missed or get knocked into the manifold pipe for the engine to draw it back in and you will have caused the very damage you tried to avoid. Lamda's are also very easy to damage and £60 a pop so you want those out the way too.
I've done 3 x MR2s now, I'm no mechanic and honestly with plus gas and patience, getting the manifold off is not that bad. Also once its off its much easier to clear out and you can get a pressure washer on the inside after to make sure you get all the dust out too.
Whatever the individual finds easiest. I'd rather try to undo 3 nuts than remove heat shield then the manifold nuts and the support brackets. less chance of breakage. With a torch from underneath you can see when all of the cat material and wadding is gone. Like you say if you are not confident of doing the job yourself get a garage to do it. Its not expensive and peace of mind. Just a quicker way I'd found and thought I'd share it. We all have different ways of doing things.

I have a couple of mechanic friends. One in Crawley and one in Oxted way. I'll ask them if they have done/would be willing to do a de-cat and see what they say/charge.
Pick mine up his week hopefully, if the dealer has managed to read the fault code on my jap import MR-S and replace the sensor!

But aftermarket manifold is better than de-pre-cat

Not everybody is a born spanner monkey. So having it done with a replacement manifold would cost labour + manifold. Otherwise it would just be labour.

Darkstar.... The garage removes the pre-cats (ceramic honeycomb and fibre material, and thats it, car runs just the same as before, no problems with MOT.

Steve, would you be prepared to give a rough idea of cost?
I'd like to have a go myself, but I've seen the state of my manifold bolts and I'm scared I'll do permanent damage.

does anyone one around the doncaster area do this.did try the one suggested early on in the thread but they said they no longer remove pre cats due to their company now do mot,s and it could get them in trouble.guess I could do it my self but just so busy with work and things.

I did mine recently with the jdmhondaparts on from eBay. If you need any pointers/help let me know. Also bought a few parts from tomo70 before, top guy with good items.

A vote for Headcase on here, aka Patrick Chambers Motor Services in Bexhill. Picked up the car (helps that he only lives about five doors away!) took it away, did the deed, returned same evening, all for 50 quid.
MrTwo's in Willenhall did mine 3 weeks ago, still cost £50, excellent job!

Have a look at them yourself if they're OK odds are they always will be.
Personally think the issue is overstated.
Either way it's easier just to buy a new aftermarket manifold and swap them.

good point, well made! After an aftermarket still, don't want something too cheap that will give me problems... But brand new zero is a little pricey with the other issues I have to sort!

By checking the pre cats. Don't be surprised to get a eml shortly after. The o2 sensors are a bit finicky. You only need look at them the wrong way sometimes. And a you get a code.
