Title: Members with OBD II Code Readers
Post by: carl_evs on April 12, 2007, 20:08
Hey all. This idea was brought up in another thread and is a cracking idea.

Any member who has an OBD II Code reader and is happy to help out other members get readings when they're having problems, please add your name and location on this thread (which will be a sticky).

Anyone thats needs help, look up a member near you, send them a PM and see if they are able to help!

Members with Diagnostic Code Readers (OBDII)

Note; These readers are only compatible with UK/EU/ or US market cars.
Japanese Domestic Market cars use a different communications protocol. See post above if you own a JDM vehicle and need a diagnostic code reading.

Thanks for these additions people.

Final call for any more in time for the next update - Jaik will hopefully be in a position to renew the interactive map when his current work commitments ease up a little.

For those without a reader who wish to be added to a locations map, please see the topic sticky in the feedback section (http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=17921). Thanks.

Another far afield member. I am in New England, not Jolly Old England. However, if someone in my area needs OBD II reader help, I will. I am in the Mount Washington Valley region of New Hampshire in the New England region of the USA. My wife has a 2002 MR2. Toyota calls them Spyders here, instead of Roadsters. This group has some excellent how-to postings, thanks!!

If you care to have a quick google, you'll find that TommyTa quickly leads to Autobink (http://www.autobink.com/) which leads to the Creader V (http://www.autobink.com/products.html#creaderv) which apparently is a code reader. The user may be a genuine sign up, but it's cheap advertising for a code reader from China that in no way guarantees to be able to read from JDM cars. Maybe not direct spam, but if nothing else it's a commercial advert and should be treated as such.

Ah thank you  s8) 8) s8)

Can you confirm that you can get the Launch Creader JP that can read JDM vehicles

There is no JP Creader V in LAUNCH original.
As I know only three language EN,Spainish and French.
I saw that picture post on the board. But be careful,LAUNCH has never that stuff. You can see on x431.com
Thanks

this is ot but I bit and looked that stuff up.

There seems to be a uk site for it  m http://www.launchtech.co.uk/creader.html (http://www.launchtech.co.uk/creader.html) m

So I think its possible the point is it likely some kind of copy and not the original product, from the named supplier.

It's true that LAUNCH has no that JP stuff.
As Launch has a sub-OEM factory. Some guys with those over produced accessories to made SO-CALLED JP Creader V.
LAUNCH official site has never shown that JP Creader V stuff. They are COPY units. The original Creader V has a stick with serial number to register at x431.com
But all copys have no that stick.
Kind remind only

If you are in EU countries,I suggest you use Creader V in Spain and EN or French.
Anyway, that has three language options for your choice.

No, I have no problem with the language ... the reader doesn't work with MR-S imported from Japan.
European market cars are ok as they are true OBDii compliant.

I got it to try really as i wanted one to read JDM cars codes.
It doesn't work on them, but I like the reader anyway because it's small, light, got a good display, and reads out live sensor readings nicely.
No batteries either.

Have heard that the generic sensors @£50 are not fully compatible with the MR2 (apparently Toyota and Hondas have different electrical properties/requirements) and need to get the specific units @£140. Still saving my pennies to go for the real deal - but anyone any experience of short/long life from the generic sensors?

Used a cheap bluetooth dongle (chinese ELM327) with jap spec MR-S on Android mobile phone running "Torque (free)"
Fields that can be mapped:
   . Intake Temp
   . Coolant temp
   . Revs
   . Speed
   . Throttle
. Acceleration (using phone acceleration sensor)
   . All data widget

The chinese knock-off owever supports less protocols and speed than real ELM327 chips...

Hi all, I have tried since a "Diag my toyota" free android app with a cheap ELM327 OBDII dongle on my Toyota MR-S. (Yes, it's a jap one...)
It does give a direct value reading on few sensors like accelerator, clutch, etc... that could help people test if their sensors are working or not
It does allow to read ECU error but could not get it to work on my MR-S. THe non jap cars should be OK

If you have an ELM327, give it a try, it is nice to see the voltage range on the accelerator when you press so you know the normal range, so using two cars should allow to diagnose easier sensor issues by comparing...

Hope it helps...

Just a quick heads up... If you have an Android Phone you can download an App called Torque from the marketplace. It is VERY VERY good. Not only can you use it to scan for codes you can use it to display realtime data.

Pair this up with a cheap bluetooth OBD reader (Expect to pay around £15) and you have your own code reader.

I've erased loads of codes on a variety of cars at work and I charge £5 a pop...

Good idea. To make that easier, I suggest making sure all the PIDs are selected that you want to log, then start logging a run and email it to yourself. Then open it in ScanXL for some pretty graphs  s:) :) s:)

Had a play with it today with the Torque app, really cool.  The Head Up Display reverses the screen so you can lay your tablet/phone on the dayshboard and it reflects in the windscreen the right way round - great idea  :-) :-) :-)

I also had a couple of error codes from unplugging the MAF which I have cleared using this setup.

I got this one:

Only cost £6.50, and seems pretty multi-purpose. Gives clear results with the Torq software that was included, and easy to use on your android phone via bluetooth.
The 2001 thing may refer to the change in US law that year, stating that all cars had to be fitted with an OBD socket. Just a thought...

Lowestoft / Norwich....
I have bought one - simple bluetooth ELM327 code reader - The software looks very complicated and far too sophisticated for a mere blonde girl like me - but it confirmed my code of 0151. Hubby is an electronics guy and he fitted a heater bypass resistor mod until I can get a new O2 unit fitted.
But anyone needs a reader I'm in Lowestoft - occasionally in Norwich at weekends give me a PM.

I've just got one and am in Tamworth.

Only problem I had is that when I plugged into the mr2 all the text was backwards, like mirror writing! I can still read it though. Tried it in my celica and no problem so not know why it is. My partner suggested that it's because the mr2 is back to front being rear engined!!

Hi all,

Been a while!

Having just got the dreaded engine check light, rather than immediately take my mr2 to the junkyard for £100, I decided to buy a U480  obi two kanobi scanner.
Despite looking a like Fisher Price 'my first Walkie-talkie' it worked rather well and kindly informed me of a p0135 error.

Anyway, now I own one, PM if you need a scan around south London Se27.

Cheers all
Dave

Have various readers including factory kit for other makes.(gm/vag/volvo)
got the elm327 wifi which is my favourite.
got techstream but my subscription is out, so it'll only do code reading and such like (pita to set up).

I don't keep the software installed for others so will need notice or can just drop the leads off.
or you can borrow an wifi/bluetooth dongle type OBD tool. pickup from home work or drop off if in-between/nearby.

edit: after my experience with the ELM327, I bought one of the cheap ones direct from China* as I fancy having one of these in each car, but willing to wait for the budget ones this time around - PM me if I forget to update this when it arrives late April'18, but ~£2 for the hardware (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B014WHK27W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) + ~£3 for Torque Pro seems amazing!

* I gather they're reasonable for pulling/resetting fault codes, but less reliable for running live dashboards as the Bluetooth sometimes fails...

I have a code reader in the west yorkshire area, I will read anyones codes and give advice.
But at £18.50 you should think about buying one. Iv'e looked, Its scary the amount of readers there are and the price difference.
I do not have any connection with this code reader company and cant remember who I bought it off on ebay but I could find out.
It was £18.50 inc post and it reads all mr2 codes and does some live stuff (o2 sensor and injection stuff, it does not read air bag codes , maybe a beter model does that.
It is wired not bluetooth and is about the size of a large phone.
It is made by Creader. I worked at a car garage a couple of years ago and they had a car diagnostics tablet by the same people, the one at the garage was £1000, for £18.50 you can't go wrong.
There is no point buying somthing for £100+ because the mr2 is quite old there is a limit to what you can read with the standard ecu.

Most people buy the Bluetooth ones for less than £5 and then buy torque pro for android does almost everything you want .

Hi all

I bought an OBD 11 Bluetooth device a few years ago as we had two SEAT cars (now only one) made by Voltas.

Will this work with the MR2 to read codes or make any alterations? When I bought it I believed it to work with all VAG cars.

Gerry

If I'm not mistaken that's the OBDEleven stuff that came out around 2014ish. It's very VAG-specific but maybe it will read codes via the standard OBD2 channels anyway.

You won't be able to adjust anything

Adding my name to the list: I've got a Veepeak bluetooth dongle and it works well with Car Scanner ELM OBD2 app on my iPhone. I'm based in Croydon, CR0 but work in Peckham, SE15.

I can go on the list.
TOPDON Topscan OBD2 bluetooth to their own software. Works quite well and although I've not tried it, should be able to clear safety fault codes like the airbag.
Milton Keynes area.
