Title: where to buy breast plate?
Post by: Kool PT on August 6, 2008, 18:20
private sales aside, does anybody know where in the UK sells breast plates for the mr2 roadster?

the only place I can find is japanparts who do the cusco anti flex plate...which isn't really in the UK at all.

I have spent hours looking on google but as there are about a million different names for this mod it's proving difficult. breast plate, anti flex plate, anti skid brace...etc.

aside from corky & cusco, did anybody else ever make one?

I think that's your best bet.

Or get the Cusco through any store that sells japanese stuff in UK.

Like Prolex? I've waited for over three weeks to recieve my J-spec nose badge, have currently been waiting for 10 days for a response as to when the hell it will arrive. Three ignored emails so far, I wonder when I will get a response. I have asked him twice if he can sell it and have been ignored both times. Any other stores worth talking to?

They don't make them anymore. So i'm stuck waiting for one to go in the private sales. Who the hell would sell it unless they were upgrading to MSMB or selling their car? It's not like waiting for something rubbish that turns up every three days!

I am currently developing a stiff breast plate. A test one is under fabrication - hopefully finished in the next 2 weeks. Once I have tested it I will put up more details & shall be putting them for sale.

Pretty pic as a 'taster'....

Where are the holes for the hoses and did you remember to allow for the extra hose clips on the air conditioned cars? Nice project, hope you sell lots of them!

It fits under the centre of the car, a direct bolt-on replacement for flimsy stock braces across the centre tunnel. As the only bracing I have added (yet!) I can definitely recommend it, it really makes the whole car feel more solid.

Viewed from the front of the car, the stock set-up looks like this -

and the Corky's (or similar) looks like this -

Or go the whole hog, a MSMB (breast plate +)

Not sure if they are available new from http://www.3point0racing.com/Braces_MSMB.cfm, but they may become available S/H over here after a few were imported for our GB.

Quite common for cars getting sold to be returned to stock and mods sold on here separately. That's how I got mine, keep your eye on the Private Sales.

Well spotted...the holes are on the manufacturing drawing - they are just not included on the FEA plot that I posted above....

Quote from: "aaronjb"Hey it's a Corky plate!
True. Although I have made a few changes with the aim of increasing stiffness and I didn't actually measure & copy from his design - I actually spent a long time under my car in the rain working it out for myself. I know it would have been easier to buy from Corky but I get huge tax benefits if I 'develop' products like this through my company   s:D :D s:D  .... I'd rather waste the cash than pay it to Mr Brown & his cronies...

sjspitz, fair play for designing it yourself. As you are still in the early stages would you consider designing a version like the MSMB as its supposed to be better and there is nobody currently offering one since Corky doesnt do them anymore. I'm sure you'd shift more!   s:wink:  s:wink:

That would be interesting. I'd imagine ground shipping from UK across Europe wouldn't even be as bad as from US.

Yes, I thought that too.  Of course if there is a chance of a MSB, will that limit the number of people that would buy a breast plate though?  Guess price is the key..

Just what I was thinking. I assume most would be interested in the "real" thing, but like you said, price counts.

Or were you thinking about doing the breast plate first and then just adding the rest to that? IIRC, Corky tried to do that, but it just didn't work out.

Yeah. Progress has been me moaning to my fabricator to find out WTF he is up to.... I mean in the time he has been working on this, I have finished two major design jobs for his company! I am considering an engineering walk-out - but being a single person on a picket line is no fun!.

The company doing the profiled plate lost the original PO. I am being promised it ASAP but they have been pretty slow on this. Once I know it fits I will get a price from them to make 5x or 10x batches depending on how many people are interested once I know final price. I am also looking at a different fabricator who I may go to speak to at lunchtime today.

Hi All,

I found a place in the UK that sells breast plates and other Cusco bracing http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk

I was going to wait and see if any came up on the second hand market but as most people said that these are one of the best mods to make for handling I ordered these about 8 weeks ago and they arrived yesterday. Perhaps not the cheapest or quickest way to do it but saved me watching the "Private sales" section on the hope of getting them.

Hope this helps anyone looking for someone in the UK that sells them.

Cheers,

Naive question here, anyone know what's involved in fitting these two?

Presumably the strut brace is just unbolt strut tops and fit?  Does it fit without interfering with the plastic liner or does this need cutting / modifying?

What about the breastplate? Are there mounting bolts already in place for this or is any other work required?

Strut brace means cutting plastic or running without it (I do this and the front bin has stayed dry, if a little dusty). Breast plate fits in place of existing feeble factory bracing and is just a case of remove 6 bolts, drop old tin braces off, offer new one up and replace the bolts. Can even be done without jacking up the car.

Now it's fitted. I was actually staggered by the improvement in feel & handing of the car....Just have a few tweaks to make to some sizes and will be ready to go for a batch.

The prototype cost me £121, this will drop when I make a good sized order (5off) but I am looking at painting options so it may go back up. It is looking like £120 - £150 and this will include the correct length stainless bolts & washers.

I'd possibly be interested in one of these breast plates, since I had my recent re-work of the turbo install, next on the list is bracing, as I think the aftermarket bracing was removed from my car, I drove it yesterday, first time in ages, and after driving the Audi all of the time, the twitchness was more apparanent. I need under body bracing as well as front and rear strut bracing.

Interested to see a final product and some prices  s:) :) s:)  Might be worth a little review in MR2 Only Mag once its tried and tested too.

I am basically ready to kick off a batch of these - except I have a few remaining issues:

1) The cost for me to add the square holes to mate with the Toyota pipe clips adds a good wedge to the price, so I am looking into supplying standard round hole mount pipe clips. Does anyone know of a UK suppler of such parts? And to save me getting under the car again, does anyone have the diameter of the three pipes?

2) Painting - anyone know of a good (cheap) contract paint or powder coat company in the UK? I don't fancy painting them cos I do not have a garage....

Hi. I could put you in touch with a couple of excellent and reliable engineering firms that offer in-house painting.
One in particular would have no problem with small quantities and would probably even sample for free if you can show them the interest/pre-orders you have.

Re the holes, I don't know what profiling method you are using, but laser cutting should add around 10 - 30p per hole. Water Jet cutting, if you are working in ally and your laser cutter does not have capacity to cut it, will work out more, but still only in pence, not pounds. I cannot remember if the rear face needs to be pocketed and that will cost however you profile. Microjet plasma on the other hand reaches its limitations with this sort of detail, which is where a laser works out a lot cheaper because you don't have to second op for the hole profiles. If you have a product that needs bodging up to work, you will sell less of them. People want to use the original pipe clips for peace of mind, cable tie bodge could chafe pipes in the long term.  Profiling is cheapest it has ever been at the moment. Drop me line if you get stuck for a decent profiling supplier.

Powder coaters should be a yellow pages job.

Quote from: "ChrisGB"I cannot remember if the rear face needs to be pocketed and that will cost however you profile.

If it's as thick as the Corky bracing, it does (the originals being plate steel, of course, have minimal thickness)

Well I can agree no matter how long you spend on an estimate, it is still just that, an estimate. If things consistently take longer that estimated though maybe the estimation process can benefit from some attention or a better feedback loop.

Maybe you just meant we are all too optimistic when starting something, so im sorry if thats the case.   s:) :) s:)

Sorry to sound like a noobie but does it reduce the breakover angle  (underboby clearance) at all ?  I ask because I occasionally get a rub when I turn into my drive.

Yes, just a little, due to the bracing on the X section (see pic), the plate itself is the same thickness as the stock plates. I get the occasional zing across the top of a square speed bump

Assuming it is the standard fitted plate that is catching would I be correct in thinking this would give more underbody protection to anything vital (my other car is an '86 Range Rover with 2" lift, big tyres etc and is used for some serious off-road fun so you can see where I am coming from).  If I try and get the MR2 in the garage there will be some almighty sparks flying - would a breast plate help or hinder?

Well I can't wait anymore so I'm going to contact Corky and get one from the US.

If the shipping isn't that much extra I might buy a few extras.

All,

There is a small discount for multiple purchases (11+ is much better), however were the big cost saving is with the shipping.

Buying a "single" BP will cost $166+$45 shipping (6-10 days transit time) if we buy 6 then the shipping cost is a much more reasonable $100.

With the current exchange rate of around $1.60 to the pound, I would suggest a price of £110.00 plus any duties and fees (pro rata)

Any thoughts?

From what I've read this is one of the best handling mods for the MR2...£110 is a small price to pay...but what will the duty be? Surely on a bulk postage it will be moe due to the value of the order!

Which means it could work out not much elss than individually shipped!!

Isn't there someone in the UK that can manufacture these?

I'm still in BTW!!!

The breast plate makes the body more rigid and gives the car a more solid feel. It is a very good effect for very little money. You would be hard pushed to ever find someone taking one off their car because they did not like it.

Duty on suspension and chassis parts is 3.5%. This is applied to the value of the package including shipping costs, then VAT is calculated on the total. If you import one at a time, you have high per part shipping cost, then you add duty to that as well as each part, plus handling fee per part (sometimes as much as £25). One big package splits the cost of per part packaging, shipping and handling down by a huge amount. This saves on overall cost and duty.

Hope this helps.

Chris
