Title: Scratches
Post by: Anonymous on February 5, 2004, 19:09
Hi,

Looks like a cat or something has been taking a strool over my 2.

A dozen or so little white scratches over one of the wings nr the headlight.

I know you cant use T cut on metallic paint, so whats the best way to hide them, touch up paint and a cocktail stick?

Suggestions welcome

Thanks

I seem to remember Kris has some special stuff you can rub in to blend touch up paint in till it vanishes.. And if they're deep, that's probably your best bet if they're quite deep..

If not - I'm sure there's a T-Cut variant thats safe on metallic cars..

I'm sure Kris will be along in a second to remind me what that stuff's called.. erm.. erm! D'oh...

well there's Langka, but I'm not sure how good it is for long thin scratches.

It you can run your finger over the stratch and catch your nail on it then it needs paint, if you cant feel anything and its just a mark/very light scratch then you could use some of my magic stuff i have - mer scratch remover... worked a treat on the small scratches i had on my hard top and will be used in a different way on the bad ones.

If your anywhere near Milton Keynes or turn up to a meet im at your more than welcome to use it.

Hi,

Thats great thanks sadly im up in west yorks.

May I ask where you can buy it, have some paint on order with Mr T and buying some cocktail sticks for application.

I have a mixture of the two some are minor , anyone heard of cats causing this before?

Thanks

I have cats and they do the same to my car - try to put a good couple of coats of wax on your car, that should help.

you can buy it from here (http://www.qvcuk.com/ukgasp/frameset.asp?nest=%2Fukgasp%2FIsItemNumberRedirect.asp&country=uk&txtDesc=mer), 3rd item down: Mer Professional Scratch Repair Kit with Video

Hope that helps

I've used T cut on various metallic/pearlescent cars without causing any problems  s:?: :?: s:?:

Im documenting the ones im doing on my hard top at the moment and will have that done the next weekend that has nice weather.

2 options, use Langka stuff and apply more paint, or use the mer stuff apply a couple of coats, then lacquer, then an abrasive to flatten it, then buff it up.

ive kinda gone off the pen... while it is superb for strange shaped scratches, my car being metalic it doent seem to transfer enough flakes and it looks flat when it comes out. however if you have a non-metalic you cant really go wrong!   s:D :D s:D

I had a small 6cm scratch along the bottome off my door which had taken the black paint down to er.. black primer?  I used a Halfords 2 pen set in Toyota Astral Black and I'm well pleased with the results.

I would go with Kris on this and highly recommend the Lanka route with a little touch up paint if the scratches are bad enough. I have had EXCELLENT results with this stuff. You REALLY can't see where the scratches were once it has been treated. Tremendous stuff. But that Mer stuff looks a bit interesting.........  s:shock:  s:shock:    s8) 8) s8)

I have one of these as well, and got decent results when I used it... the AutoSharp pen is loads better and easier to use though.

my 2p worth..

1) T-cut used to do a compund specifically for metallic finishes - it came in a blue bottle and was called something imaginative like "T-Cut Metallic"

2) My baby had a huge great 8" scratch on his arse from when he was in Mr T's showroom - the lads there made it worse when they tried to cut it out with standard T-cut on a dry industrial paper towel - I kid you not. I watched them do it - too gobsmacked too utter a sound! After several snotty phone calls they eventually sent a paint work specialist out to me - he used a "secret compound" with very very very fine wet n dry paper - I watched through my fingers! But he did a mighty fine job and even i can hardly see where the offending scratch used to be. One thing he did stress to me, that NO-ONE has ever said to me before - never cut dry paint work. always wet it first. everytime. and keep it wet. After spending 5 years selling parts & accessories, and going out with a lad that worked in a bodyshop this came as a total surprise to me!

so there you go. keep it wet. nuff said.   s:wink:  s:wink:

Kris

Don't forget to take a series of photos and take notes of what you are doing. This could end up proving very useful.

Or set up a webcam so we can watch you live as you tackle your bodywork with some wet and dry....but forget the wet bit!!!  s:twisted:  s:twisted:

well i just took the sandpaper to my car....   s:shock:  s:shock:

The Mer stuff sorts it out though, so im not too bothered now, but oen thing is to note... when they say "use a small amount of paint" they mean it. as i got pissed off and went outside the scratch the finish is crap... i have to use the Langka stuff now to remove all the new paint and start again!   s:roll:  s:roll:

Edit - just went over the area with Langka and it started to look a bit better... then gave it a polish and now its looking good. What i need to do it use the langka to get rid of all the paint ive put on, start again and use less paint. Still, for a first attempt it aint bad - learn from my mistakes i guess!   s:) :) s:)

Edit2 - here are some pics. The reason for the big blob is where i used too much paint.

I had to repair a scratch some time ago...I have red car and it was deep enough to show the white primer. I bought the paint from Toyota, which was less than 5 euros (paint+clearcoat+brush+metal brush).

Then I used a toothpick to put some paint in the scratch. And only to the scratch, not around it at all. After letting it dry like two weeks, I used rubbing compound to that area. The result is pretty much perfect, I can't find the place anymore, even if I try to...

This might be the easy way to those who don't feel like sanding the paint...I know I wouldn't dare...

Just cleaned my 2 and found a HUGE (well 4mm x 1mm) stone chip on the bonnet!
It's taken it down to primer. Any suggestions for best touch up option?
Only done 1000 miles since new and now all I see when I look at it is this bloody CHIP!!!  s:evil:  s:evil:

any of the above should do the trick... as your car is red & you wont use lacquer you migth as well go down the langka route. fill the chip up with several layers of touch up paint (try not to go outside the chip itself) then rub a little lankga on, polish & wax... job done.

Post by: Anonymous on February 18, 2004, 21:16
I don't believe it!  I just got out to my car and I found 3 scratches 2 ft long and going down to the metal/primer in places.

Because it covers the front wing and the door it looks like I'm going to have to fork out to get both panels re-painted Lagoon Blue.

I have no idea as to the cost and no wish whatsoever to claim on insurance so I'm going to attempt the Mer kit option.

Is it a lost cause with such heyowge scratches?....or will patience and elbow grease to the job.  I'd quite like to have a go at it.  Def a skill worth picking up.

What posses these single helix DNA low life charvers to do this?  If I find out which of the local burberry cap brigade did this I may need restraining!
