Title: Brake suppliers?
Post by: Zonda_ on March 2, 2013, 16:56
Want to get some new brakes but looking round the prices seem to vary wildly! For instance CTP are £140 for a set of discs and pads where Camskill are £52!  That's a hell of a difference in anyones book but is it a case of you get what you pay for? Has anyone used the Camskill ones and can report back on quality?

PAGID Discs - approx £75 for the front (Eurocarparts) or £54 on Ebay
EBC Yellowstuff Pads - approx £58 on Ebay

Cheers,
Paul

Got EBC on now,  don't like them,  less feel than standard setup.

If you got yellow or red stuff then they do need to get some temp in them until they start to have a feel.

They vary quite a bit. Not heard much in the way of good reports on the green stuff pads, but the yellows are brilliant. I've found the yellows to be fairly decent even when cold.

If you just want standard type stuff you won't beat brakes international they supply most motor factors, garages etc and you can order online.  Average discs are about £25 etc

Agreed Nige,
I think yellowstuff, pagid discs and HEL hoses are fantastic on my Turbo 2  s:D :D s:D

entry level ebc pads, half the price of the yellows, just for normal driving not track days etc. So far so good.

Oh track day pads Carbotech not cheap tho they were ~£340 for the set but make EBC etc look like a joke.  I've had them on for about 6 track days now and probably could get 1 or 2 more out of them where i'd finish a set of yellow stuff in 1 day own my old MX5 so over all quite cost effective.

Going to pagid RS42 hopefully next on the AP 4 pot size but using  K sport 6 pot calipers.

I got mine off Camskill.
4x discs and 4x pads.

They're grand. Do the job.
But I wouldn't rate them for "spirited" driving.

Where would I get the wind back tool from? Seen one in halfords but think It was £40 :-/

Not sure, haven't seen it so don't know if something else would do the job. I imagine cheaptoyotaparts will stock them.

here you go, can use long nose pliers to wind it in if it's not seized but you're better off with the right tool for the job, pliers don't like being twisted  s;) ;) s;)    m http://amzn.to/Za855z (http://amzn.to/Za855z) m

Don't forget a tube of copperEase, wd40, hammer, wire brush. Caliper cleaner spray never hurt.
The first one is essential

Gotta agree with shnazzle there after the night mare of getting things out, you will cover everything in copper grease hehe could even swap wd for plus gas  s:) :) s:)

Don't worry, it's perfectly doable!

Just remember one obvious nugget:
Lefty-loosey, righty-tighty....REGARDLESS of whether you're looking at it from the back or the front.
Get it?

So when you go to turn the bolt, fight the temptation to pull the spanner/ratchet to the left. Look at it as if you were under the wheel arch looking out.
Title: Re: Brake suppliers?
Post by: tomaky on May 29, 2013, 15:58
Indeed maybe i over exagerated as far as loosening yes tight spaces alot patience needed to get your spanners or the nut then little turn then back on nut alittle time consuming but i didnt have to use too much force on anything the worst bit was the handbrake pin mine required a fair few hits off plus gas and hammer to get it out.

Hopefully do my brakes today, I'm subscribe to a how to on here "rear discs and pads" I assume if I do this front one will not be far different?
Title: Re: Brake suppliers?
Post by: tomaky on June 10, 2013, 09:28
Hmm the front one will get the disk and pads off but wont get them back on if applied to the back if thats what you mean?

Not sure what you mean :-/
Basically could you follow the guide for the front aswell?
Title: Re: Brake suppliers?
Post by: tomaky on June 10, 2013, 09:40
Oh ye but you likely wont need tue wind back tool on the piston, just loosen the nipple (container to catch drops of fluid) and push piston back.

Yup, and the fronts have smaller radius but are a few mm thicker. From past experience I expect the ones with 4 stud holes are the fronts and 8 holes are the rears.

I had this too, PlusGas is a good start. I then managed to fit in my 14" breaker bar with a socket for more leverage on the upper ones. For the lower ones I  used the Edd China/Wheeler Dealers spanner trick...

Pop on the correct spanner (ring end) so that it's pointing just under the car, then use the next size up spanner to 'lengthen' the effective lever by hooking the ring of the second spanner over the 'U' part of the first spanner. This give you effectively double the length to work with and also allows you to manoeuvre it around some awkward bits of chassis/body.

It's a little hard to explain in words but if you want I'll take a photo of how it works when I get home.

Also, ratchet spanners make it a lot easier once you get the thing loosened a bit!

Hate to beat a dying goat here but...sure you're turning the right way? Only saying that because I've been that idiot...put all my might into it, soaked it in WD40. Was about to to get some PlusGas and a gas burner when I realised...turn other way  s:) :) s:)  hehehee. Fail.

Here you go (so the right end would go over the bolt)  s;) ;) s;)  that's pretty much the method I've always used for any bolt!
