Title: 2006 Roadster error code P1394 VVTI Malfunction
Post by: sportyking on June 2, 2013, 13:21
Hi,

forgive this being my first post but I'm not actually the owner, just the family first point of call for all things automotive.

My Sister recently started looking for a soft top and was considering all sorts of options but knowing what she wanted from the car I pushed her towards the MR2 Roadster.

Anyway, I am now rapidly learning about the car and have a new issue to iron out.

Error code P1394 Generic code for VVTI malfunction is stored in the ECU even though the CEL does not always illuminate.
I have cleared the code and it returns after a good blast down the road.

I have searched and on some other toyotas it appears to be related to either a VVTI Oil control valve or its associated filter / strainer.  Unfortunately I don't have a clue where these may be on the roadster and having had a previa in the family for 10 years until this roadster replaced it I know toyotas and their codes can be a bit mis-leading.

Anyone out there had this problem or can point me towards a workshop manual that may help?

Many thanks for the links Pete, I searched P1394 but nothing came up for some reason!
This gives me somewhere to start now.  I will post if I find anything of use to others.

Thanks also for the welcome to the club, though I must admit I'm currently a modded VX220 turbo owner.  Having said that, I am considering a Mk1 MR2 to have as a future classic.  It goes back to the mid-eighties when I remember standing in a used car showroom choosing between the MR2 and a Mk3 escort RS turbo.  The turbo won that debate, just.
