Title: My 2001 Silver MR2 - Mr Stev3's track day now sprint roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on June 20, 2014, 10:21
Ok folks, a few weeks back I picked up a little roadster for beer money as I wanted a track car and didn't want to use my daily car.
I'm not a stranger to mr2's having owned two previously albeit in the mk2 form.

Heres one of them, cant find the other

here is my daily car :

ANYWAY

Back on topic. I plan to get started stripping her down and ordering parts asap so all the interior seats, door panels etc can be expected in the for sale section soon

So here she is as she stands at the moment

What exhaust has that got on it? Looks hugee. So what are the plans for the mods then?  s:) :) s:)
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on June 20, 2014, 12:27
It has some custom exhaust that was fitted a few years ago
It's really not to my taste and will get replaced

Well here's the plan

Stripped interior with corbeau forza and harnesses
Rogue seat frames
Tien springs for athe moment
15's rather than the 17's the last owner put on
Needs a service
Panel filter
Toyo sports manifold
Hard top
Soft top completely removed
Whiteline arb
New discs and pads haven't decided which brand yet
New poly bushes
Toyo t1r I plan
Lots more
My first track day is august 16th and I don't have a lot of time off work so will be tight
Will do what I can in the time I have
£2000 is the budget I have set to get it somewhat ready
So let's see

Sounds good. Just thought I would mention something that I have come across very recently. I see no mention of a roll cage/bar. The hardtop, is not a safety feature what so ever. Aparently the softop, has a much better roll over protection than the hardtop. If your planning on it being a track day toy, are you not thinking of putting some sort of roll over safety?
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster

I will be going cage or half eventually but not immediately
I have a large list of items on the radar
I didn't know that about the hardtop and soft top , I'll bare that in mind
Seems to be a large knowledge of these cars so I'm welcome to suggestion or places recommended to get my goodies from

You may want to consider some form of sump baffling as I am under the impression that the 1zz can suffer from oil starvation. Also fuel surge can be suffered if you run less than half a tank so you may want to consider some foam in the tank or just keep an eye on your fuel gauge  s:) :) s:)
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: Jrichards20 on June 20, 2014, 21:46
I think matt performance knows alot more than me, but from reading, I think its because tue hardtop is purely fibreglass, with no bars for strucural integrety so it will just shatter on inpact. Where the softtop will protect your head alot better in the event of the unthinkable  s:( :( s:( . And if its purely a trackday car, I wouldnt suggest the t1rs. Very soft sidewalls. Hope you dont think im taking control of your project  s:) :) s:)  just some advice that ive read from many others on here, and my own experience as well with tyres.

I'm welcoming the advice
I come from subarus and no cars are the same always someone who can help
I'm glad I've had replies and hope to continue to do so
I'll have to read what others have ran and see what's recommended and if they work for me

On a stock engine with regular tyre sizes you don't really get problems with either of these.  More power and more grip then you may.

Like the sound of your plans, pretty much the same as mine...but as I found you will probably end up doing and spending more! You should join is for the Toyota track day in July before any mods, then you can benchmark improvements from your hard work

The mk3's in the mr2 Championship are all running the above and the only difference being 888's (standard power). With him building a track car I assumed there was a chance of him running semi-slicks.

I am going to go to semi slicks but next year as I'm quickly blowing through the budget and with holidays looking and saving for our new house I'm trying to stay within what I set myself

My seat runners from rogue arrived , excellent people to deal with
The interior is all out but kept the firewall carpet
Many of the parts are on here for sale I still have more to put up
My seat is on order I'll get harnesses second hand be cheaper
Next week I have a day off so will spend it on the car

Baffled sumps aren't allowed in the MR2 Championship regulations. It's been queried before, standard only. Hence why I'm not doing Rockingham this weekend or next year or ever.

Rockingham a bit of an engine killer? If so I'll strike that one of my "must visit list"  s:D :D s:D
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: Jrichards20 on July 1, 2014, 11:54
Rockingham is anti-clockwise with long long longggggg left hand bend. so oil starvation can happen if you are running slicks because the speed and grip tends to move the oil away. But if your not running slicks i doubt one trip there will make too much of a difference, just make sure to top up your oil and monitor the pressue etc on the day.

Bill, I didn't realise that. Surely there is no performance advantage as it is simply an engine protection modification.

Do you know the reasoning behind the regulation?

(Sorry for the slight thread drift  s:) :) s:)  )

Well a small update
The seat is in as you can see above and the harnesses are being done soon.
The interior is as stripped down as I want to go for the moment but I have kept the carpet.
My toyo t1r tyres have arrived as the search for wheels goes on, I opted for these instead of slicks for the moment not so much because they were cheaper but have used them on my cars in the past and for my first track day on the short llandow circuit as a novice they should be fine.
Decided on discs at the moment to accompany my ebc yellow stuff pads I have already in my inventory
I have roughly 5 weeks left before it's first outing and I'll see how it does then evolve from there.

Tyres arrived T1r's

Gave it a service with the CTP Kit Option 2 and a k&n
Fitted a new battery one that was meant for the car

You've been a busy boy, some nice choice mods there.

The toyo t1rs are great road tyres but you should think about something gripper for track days, it makes a big difference. The tyres will hold you back for sure.

So when you gonna join us on track?!

I would love to join you guys on track and hope to next year
I did consider 888 or some other such tyre but there's always room to upgrade after I'm used to the car
I have to say after test drives this week my god it's a hoot was kinda wierd driving the Subaru after it infact it didn't feel as good and that's something I didn't expect to say and well the new focus I drive at work feels so numb and devoid of anything

Roll on tomorrow

Epic
Loved it
Car didn't miss a beat
Stayed on for 40 plus minutes and she did well and held her own
On my last lap went some serious sideways and made a save haha
Need to get slicks you were right and new shocks next Definately as they felt poor which obviously I didn't notice til today as they looked fine on inspection.
People seemed to like the car and I loved learning so all in all glad I chose the mr2 and totally been worth building it.
First track day of many I'm sure

Great news  s:D :D s:D

You'll find lots you want to change or replace, that's what I've found.

But do it a bit at a time and don't feel like you've got to get it all done straight away.

Glad your enjoying it, makes it all worth while doesn't  it

Sad news for me
Think she has head gasket failure won't go into too much detail cos I hope to be wrong I'll be gutted if this is the case but if so she will be broken for parts which will be a shame but with looking to buy a new house etc I can't justify the time or money but I'll keep you all posted  :-) :-) :-)

Oh no! Gutted, what are the symptoms?
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on September 26, 2014, 14:01
Scratch that just an oil leak from the tensioner and a small one from the drive shaft
Mot failure on Monday just gone but nothing mega so all is well and after I come back from holiday the spending will start again before Xmas rapes my wallet

Well you will see me , then overtake me , then see me, then overtake me haha
I don't know if I actually could bare breaking it I love it too much, whenever I'm not in the focus I take the mr2 for a spin it's got to the point where my Subaru only did 4000 miles last year and gene less so this year. May sell it before it becomes a waste

So she failed her mot
New handbrake cables
New lambda sensor
Some bulbs (obviously done before)

So not too bad

Going on holiday for a week with my missus so the track car will have cower under it's cover before it goes to it's next track day on the 18th
Going to try and lose some more unwanted weight off her by then

Hardtop is here , it's black but that's fine for now
My fitting kit won't be here before the weekend so no track pics with it on.
Tow strap is here to replace the standard one so looks less fugly
Will get pics up soon

So I went back to llandow on the 18th October now with new oxygen sensors and it ran amazing, no engine management issues like last time throwing up lights and making me come back in to pit .
The car really was awesome and now with it running right it was a different machine and i'm more in love with it than I thought I could be.

Heres some sample pics taken by oversteer photography, he did take 98 but I don't wanna bore you

Sounds Like you had a good time on track again, was it dry?
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on November 17, 2014, 09:31
It was wet and slippery in the morning then dried a little at lunch time and a race line appeared then mist decended so different driving conditions every time I've been which has been a good learning curve.
Not have slicks slowed me down as it dried out
They are a must now but no more action for a few months and by then it will be upgraded a little but more  :-) :-) :-)

January it will be time for the manifold to go on I bought months ago.
Will overhaul the bushes and fit new shocks , think coilovers can wait for a while there's no rush.
Also arb front and rear and some slicks and go from there.

I wish I knew why I was so attached to this car :-/

In Vegas, try to book half a day with world class driving,  (I think that's the name), I drove a Ferrari 458, r8, lp640, and a jag XKR-s !! And they don't mind if you gun it too, they encourage it!

Fantastic day, have a great time dude...and happy birthday in advance

I won a few times
$61 four times from $15 and $40 from $5 all from the big wheel.
Lost on the slots every time and I'm crap and poker also haha

I have penciled in combe for march and April so will be looking for some improvements between now and then but trying not to go mad and just do it bit by bit so I can see and feel the transformation instead of doing huge amounts in one go.
Problem is I can't help but buy if I see deals or have money spare.
I've only had the car since July and I never took it to the track in standard form which I kind of look back and wish I did

I have a list of parts I want to buy and I'm just ticking them off as and when but really will be looking at bushes and arb and a strut brace next, not sure what to go for so been looking about.
High on the list is a half cage and some ad08r tyres which I may put on a new set of wheels and keep these ones I recently got for going to and from the events
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: Anonymous on January 21, 2015, 20:08
If you are getting Ad08 don't bother with another set of wheels and tyres, they are great all rounders, having another set is a waste.

If you are going to do that you way as well go for something really extreme on the track tyres. The AD08 is after all an all rounder, albeit track biased

Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster

Steve don't waste your money on new shocks, if you can't afford coilovers right now (check out the group buy for the miester ones!) just save up; to change the shocks isn't really worth it for short term unless they are an Mot fail of course.
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on January 27, 2015, 11:38
Thanks Ricky
195 on front 205 rear. Sticks well but needs some better rubber. T1r give out after a while and the cars chassis has lots left.

The shocks didn't fail the mot last October but the front right fails the bounce test now after some heavy track use I think they don't wanna play no more haha

I'm looking at d2 or Bc  :-) :-) :-)

Dc performance have my car on their Facebook and offered me 10% off their BC coilovers which are £687 I believe. Your probably right dude I should wait rather than spend on shocks knowing I'll want coils later on.

Steering wheel is also on the radar

Iv got BC-Racing coilovers with a 4/6 kgmm set-up...im really happy with them.
I was previously on on tein springs and oem shocks, its a big difference.

They have offers on tyres a lot so I'm always checking but the ad08r is a mega deal

I need some rear ad08r - I was gonna get a full set of r888 but I might just get a rear pair for now, at that kind of price

Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster

I'm having to stop myself getting them now as the car needs other bits first and pointless putting new tyres on for it to sit there until end of march plus I sorned it in December as it's tax was up and I was busy with other stuff.

No! you just buy the resistor. It's not an MOT requirement to have the Airbag, and the light still functions normally. I have a resistor in mine, and one for each seatbelt pretensioners
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on January 29, 2015, 13:41
I see that's how its done  s:) :) s:)  I've been browsing jjc for some and theres a few I like, for example  m http://www.jjcraceandrally.com/trackday ... 00mm-black (http://www.jjcraceandrally.com/trackday/steering-wheels/omp-trecento-uno-steering-wheel-black-polyurethane-300mm-black) m
im a bit of an omp fan on this build

Well I've made a list of stuff to do before my first track day of the year in march.

Front strut brace was the first. but theres issues annoying me like all the rusty bits under the frunk and surrounding plastics, its all surface but does my head in. im down to 11.4 stone now so should be quicker haha . put down the weights and went for cardio   s:lol:  s:lol:

I will change the tyres in the few weeks before the event, scrub them in with some fast road driving (at speed limit) of course.

But all the surface rust actually really bothers me maybe more than it should, considering it's a track slag

The rust was bugging me too, it's easy to tart it up if you want to, just a wire brush / flapper wheel, some rust treatment, primer and some topcoat  s:) :) s:)

I will find out how different it feels when it's back on the road Friday. It has been sorn since beginning December as I had lots on and went to the States beginning of jan. But now it's time to get her ready with new parts for the years events where I can attend

Friday evening I will have some time and take her out for a few legal speed blats across the gower peninsular and I'll have an answer as to what if any difference it makes.  s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:

It's a 2.2ohm airbag resistor. You need one for each airbag / item removed, including each seatbelt pretensioner

Off the Brooklands Hairpin is a bit slow, but then you are flat until Honda, scrub a bit of speed and fly down to hatches.

The front feels a little bit tighter, I took it for a blat to Bridgend Saturday some good miles then some country lanes to see how she was and could notice a little difference but I'm sure the front strut is in need of change on the passenger side.
Next week I'll be ordering a few bits.

So pembrey is all paid for now can't wait

I've ordered two new front kyb shocks as one side needs changing and best to do it in pairs.
Plus I don't really have £640 spare for coilovers right now maybe next year.

Ordered an ultra racing lower rear brace from gt-4 play do it the easy way, cheapest price I found .

I was offered a package for £237 so read some reviews and a lot of Porsche guys use them so I thought hell give them a try and I wasn't disappointed, I haven't a frame of reference really as ive not owned r888 to compare but I was happy with them  s:) :) s:)

For me they were epic and never missed a beat and the car felt as if it's was scalextric haha but I did see people saying the lasted less longer but lots rated them highly
I'll try something else next I think
Back at pembrey in April with more mods to suspension so see how much better it gets

I will do buddy

If I were off I'd definitely be running but I'm sure I will go back there towards the end of the year

Debating exhausts right now as the aweful ones it came with have been on far to long

I had mongoose on my old mk2 back in the day but cobra seems to be popular now and I need it to pass track noise restrictions so both mental
I've just watched a cobra video 80db looks good to me
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster

Think the cobra is usually recorded more like 94db trying to find the thread where people put there db with different exhausts.

Cobra is definitely more than 80db. Looking at over 90db. Mine with markii pipe, decatted and cobra quad exit was 95 iirc.

A family friend has an old mg midget minty condition and has offered it to me.
Also I went to see an evo
Now I'm weighing it all up because I know the grass isn't always greener on the other side
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: 1979scotte on April 12, 2015, 07:53
Very different options there.
I'm not a fan of classic sports cars, unless its to look at, so the MG wouldn't do it for me.
What's the mpg of an evo driven in anger? Can't be good.
Do you just want a change or is the 2 not fulfilling your requirements?
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on April 12, 2015, 08:13
If ingest the evo it will replace the mr2 and in anger like 9mpg
I'll do the pros and cons and see where I land
The mr2 is fine right now and I enjoy it but I will consider my options

The evo and mr2 are very different cars, in every way possible.

Have you considered spending the extra money on making the mr2 a little more serious - IE power, suspension etc

Hi Steve,
Sorry to hear that you are thinking of selling the MR2, I was looking forward to seeing it in anger.

For what it is worth tread carefully with the Midget, before I bought the Roadster an MG was on the list but ultimately the cost of a really good one and a bad experience of previously owning one put me off. I still love them but the memory of the dreaded tin worm sends a shiver down my spine.

If you do fancy the MG make sure you get underneath it for a good look.

Pete

The mr2 will be angry on the 26th of this month haha

The mg wouldn't be good for me as you say rust is a killer and I have  the time to spend on it to make sure it doesn't happen.
I do love my mr2 but 3 cars would be silly and if I get another car it would be the mr2 that gets the chop not the Subaru i have

See if I can get a bit more weight out and fit my under brace then take it by the scruff and see if I can upset a few more bigger cars again

It's an ultra racing one I have the front brace fitted but bought this from gt4 play and never got it fitted

So my moment of grass greener is gone and i realise what a great car I've got and built and don't need another rocket car as half the fun is chasing cars bigger and better if I get an evo for track I become the target

I've been off the forum for a long time, just catching up on some of the track cars... Good man on this decision! For me, the MR2 is way more satisfying to drive than bigger cars - in stock form an Evo would be very effective, but not as fun putting a corner together... the goal becomes only to blitz everyone else. My 200sx is a little like this, but with a dash more fun due to rwd traction issues. I have a friend with a silly evo VI (600bhp ish) and he spends so much time rebuilding the damn thing, or worrying that it will blow up, that it again doesn't really tick the box for me. MR2 on a diet - and with a 2zz if you want to give that porsche more of a run for his money - is the cheap version of the Elise I'd love to own.

Had an excellent day , met some good people and the car performed brilliantly considering how low spec'd it is.
Took it fairly easy in the morning but come the last 3 hours I used as much of the black top as I could and I was harder on the brakes and generally more aggressive resulting in some surprising over takes.

Went around in an elise with a racing driver called Susanne and jesus Christ could she drive , awesome car and in the right hands it can really dance. I felt cheeky asking if I could go in it but she was friendly and said no probs

Had a lot of compliments and people seemed to be surprised how quick it was for what it is around the circuit

Thanks for the pictures Peter shame I didn't get to meet you

Hello Steve,
Glad to see that you had a good day and sorry we didn't get to catch up, I spoke to a marshal about crossing into the paddock and he said I could when there was a break. I waited until lunchtime and it didn't look like there was going to be a break so headed off.

The blue Lotus certainly looked and sounded nice with the white Integra not far behind.

Your Roadster looked to be going well and I have few more photos which I'll try and post later.

That be great Pete
Yeah dinner time was 12.30 til 1
I was quicker than a lot of the big boy toys and to be fair thier owners came to complement my car which felt good
The integra is my friend Steve and it is rapid and very well built
He was at spa a few weeks ago
The little lotus belongs to a female race driver called Susanne and she let me go around with her and inly was everything I thought it would be and in the hands of a pro , my god that car can dance

So what's next for the car?

Next is cage, even more stripping where I can, more suspension mods and new cat section and back box as I still have what was on it when I got it
Also gauges , fit a passenger seat and harness , more bushes and generally chassis I'm happy with the power with the choice of tracks I go to.
The steering wheel will be going and a new one fitted.
And I need to run some camber  so I'll get on that also
But im hoping to make half of these changes before the next track day I book inbetween now and brands in November

Watched the vids and it does look like your 2 holds well in sweeping bends at speed.
But as I mentioned on the book of faces...not the world's most exciting track is it? Does it become a bit samey after a few laps?
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on April 28, 2015, 21:20
I went around in other peoples cars and it's very technical as a circuit to be quick.
I loved it and it suits the roadster, the videos look slow and very controlled but there's a video of a civic type r chasing me and he's doing high speeds but not catching me the distance stays the same.
He also owns a Cupra 260 which I went in and that was fun but not as epic as the lotus I went around in.

So many people love pembrey and I would say try it because watching a video doesn't give an idea of how much of a hoot it was.

The mr2 still needs the driver and relies on the driver to get every bit out of the car to make up for it's short comings in performance and the fact half the people on the new stuff have esp and all that stuff so they can't get it to wrong

I love it there and it's close to me so a good place to try new parts
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster

I'd have to try it from the sound of it. Unfortunately Pembrey would be highly unlikely as the next furthest track would be Spa Francorchamps  s:) :) s:)
I have yet to track the 2 as I want it to be more track ready before I do so, but it's 80% there so I hope to do this relatively soo n
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on April 28, 2015, 21:37
It doesn't matter how track ready the car is really as you still won't be able to get the best out of it first outting, you will just be feeling it out and learning the car and how it responds on whatever circuit plus half the fun is doing a track day then improving it for the next one.
I started off doing it all quickly but then slowed it down to enjoy it as I go.

There's a few tracks on my list but I'm going to do some more improvements before my next one.

Just book a day and have some fun. Plenty use the car in standard form with some better pads

I started off doing it all quickly but then slowed it down to enjoy it as I go.

There's a few tracks on my list but I'm going to do some more improvements before my next one.

Just book a day and have some fun. Plenty use the car in standard form with some better pads
I get a hell of a lot out of the car as it!
Now I just need to really push it to see what it (and I) can do.
But to do that, I want a solid platform. Hence the remaining 20% of my track set up is indeed just some fresh track-ready pads and a brake fluid flush.

It's already braced, on coilovers, CGLock to keep me in my seat and  set of Yokohama AD08s to keep the car on the track  s:) :) s:)

But I do know what you mean with regards to the stock car being fun as it is.
I've built up some track time, just not in the 2.

I wouldn't wait , I don't think I could wait if I were you id just go for it   s:D :D s:D

The other stuff can always be done but go enjoy it as it is  :-) :-) :-)

I've done 5 track days in her current set up so moving on with new bits now I feel I'm half decent and getting the car to do what I want but also I shall be booking some tuition time because I can never learn enough
£25 for 25 minutes in my car with the company I did pembrey with will
Be invaluable so that will be fun

I'm definitely doing tuition.
I'm always up for learning and taking comments/feedback.

I have a good feel for driving but I'm no Sebastian Loeb. So, definitely tuition. If anything to learn the track.

I am getting impatient... And motivation from yourself is not helping! Hah

Too bad tracks are all at least 2hrs away from me. Not a huge issue but a bit of a pain and limited choice.

But back on topic for YOUR topic... It would be great if you could share any driving tips/experiences/improvements for next time, car setup changes

Yes I know same here

Most tracks are between 3-5 hours away except 2 local 45 minute away circuits that's the problem living In sheep land haha

For me i think your first track day should be in a completley stock car, that way you learn the car as its all completley diffeerent to road driving, you then get a idea of what aspects of the car you then want to change to improve the car to your driving style, like at the moment im loosing the front before the rear, so im going to uprate the front arb rather than both to see how that changes things.

Croft is indeed not too far away.
Very long straights though. Bit wasted on the 2.
Helen wanted to track it as well so might be a fun day out with the Audi and the MR2  s:D :D s:D
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: tomaky on April 29, 2015, 09:10
Haha, the Audi be fun   s:) :) s:)  its relatively flat so suppose its a good starter track, different elevation changes are interesting on your first track day hehe.
the straights maybe long and you might get overtaken by a hot hatch but then its so forgiving to re-overtake them in the corner, depending on how my plans develope i might get there or oulton in july.
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: shnazzle on April 29, 2015, 09:25
The Audi would be just for a jolly really  s:) :) s:)  It's a 3.0 V6 TDI so has plenty of grunt and handles ridiculously well for what it is, but it's still a lumbering beast and our daily, so wouldb't want to go through a 700 quid set of tyres haha.

Not sure July is feasible. Broke as hell after the BC coilovers and need to get all new brake pads before I indulge in such niceties.

So with my cage booked I am now starting to make a list of what I want before the next track day or should I say block of track days

I shall be doing pembrey again, then thruxton, then brands so I've givenyself two months to complete the next batch of bits and bobs

So here's the list I plan to achieve;

Cage - booked
New exhaust
Camber bolts - as I'm yet to run any camber
Mid brace
Rear arb - undecided what yet
Hard race lower arms
Steering wheel - going omp quit like the brand
New harnesses - ones I have are a bit pants
Gauges - found some I like oil and water temp
New rad - possibly mashimoto
Wilwood calipers - I doubt it will happen before but maybe if the time allows

I love Oulton Park and of course Brands  s:) :) s:)  funny as we lived in Silverstone up until 2 years ago. Silverstone Stowe circuit is not bad for small power cars but the main circuit needs a GT3 type car to get the most out of it.

As for Europe Spa is legendary, did this in my supercharged 4age 20v Rotrex Raw Striker in the wet, 272 bhp  and 525 kilos was unbelievably scary, but fantastic circuit probably best in europe tbh The Le Mans circuits are good too and there are loads of very good small local circuits dotted throughout france, oh and of course Pau if you can stand the trek there.

Anyway, i am looking at an MR2 for trackday use for a year or two as times are tight atm, so will be keeping an eye on here for some tips and supplier advice for bits.

I wasn't running a passenger seat or soft top or any of that stuff anyway but I had left the storage bin bases , carport and fire wall carpet in place

Kind of why it makes sense to me to fix the obvious weaknesses before even trying to put it under track stress  s:) :) s:)
Bracing, brakes, suspension and tyres. The power is secondary. I've had some great little fun throwing a stock 1991 Clio 1.2 around.

I suppose it can be fun to get the max out of it in both stock and modified guise to see the difference.

My cobra quad arrived from Steve at gt-4 play which I can't recommend enough
Best price I could find and super fast delivery

I snapped up a matts brace and that arrived today, it's highly recommended by a lot of you guys so when I saw it up for sale I was quick on the case

Can't wait to get these on the car once it's back from having the gauge in a couple of weeks

Back I go to look for more bits

Do try letting a few psi out of the front tyres before doing anything too drastic to the suspension. It's amazing how much difference it can make to the balance of a car. My Mk1 felt like the fronts were pawing the air, dropping them from 28 to 25 Psi (IIRC it was a few years ago) firmed up the front end completely and it got it's balance back.

Well its been a while since ive updated. the car is now scrapped..........

na just kidding   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:
Basically the car was booked in for a cage, as the date neared I tried to contact the garage who were doing it and go no answer so I popped down and it was all locked up. I carried on over the next week ringing and popping down and nothing. so late afternoon a few weeks back I popped down to find that it was being cleared out. The boss who I originally booked with wasn't around. When I asked what was going on they said they were moving but couldn't or wouldn't tell me where too nor when or if my car could be done.
I was a little bit annoyed because surely if they were moving they could of told me 30 days before when the booked me in and the fact now I could get no info out of them seemed suspect to me so I walked away.

A month of doing nothing to the car but readying it for the cage was wasted time so called P&p and booked my cage which should be with me beginning of august. Huge props to these guys

I have a huge pile of parts but with work and little time my living room is looking like a tuning shop.

Also I sold my impreza my03 a week ago as it sat there and only did 900 miles in a year so that's gone to someone to enjoy as it should be, so 10 years of imprezas is over but to be honest im not too bothered as I use a new focus diesel for work and its more than sufficient but I maybe tempted to get a little mr2 to go for evening spins in over the summer as ive been left with a £4500 budget now its gone.

True, but given the comment was that the preferred solution was to "uprate the front arb rather than both" my suggestion was to uprate the rear instead. I'm not sure if you can really soften the front arb without removing it altogether which is probably a bit extreme?

Update time

So with work being so busy it's been hard to find the time to get the car to where I want but here's some progress now having the ppcage fitted, new Trs 4 point harness and the new exhaust fitted

So dropped it in when it came just to have a look

Then over a few days here and there got it in
Sorry I didn't take many pictures of the stages

Very pleased with the cage and would recommend
Set me back more than I thought but excellent

And now a finished bum shot with new quad cobra, cat pipe and sensor plus gaskets or as I call it £700 of pain

I'm not skilled in such things
The plates didn't quite line up with the feet so adjusting had to be done but after all the test fitting and marking my father fired up the welder and welded those bad boys in
Sprayed some paint over to stop the weld rusting , I know its black and the car is silver but nobody will see it

Quote from: "tomaky"Ah just read that guideline, guess thats me out of the running haha

Yeah a cage or half cage is compulsory for this and grass route sprinting
But only for the roadster which is why I guess they aren't used in it.
I think t tops also have to have them
Next year I may change to the 1.0l class for fun if the mr2 dies

Even with hardtop only you still have to have a cage
I don't have the soft top at all just hardtop
Plus there's a few other regs I had to change the car for from its track case guise

What else have you had to do?
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on July 27, 2015, 19:24
I forget now lol
The regs aren't to bad but for the mr2 roadster the cage is needed and I've had to get door panels again as I don't have door bars, film the headlights, lots of niggly stuff. My helmet was sah2000 approved so bad to get a new one even though you can rent on the day if early enough.
Exhaust back box was too loud aswell as ugly as sin so I binned that along with the cat pipe that fell apart
You would have to run in my class as in c street you aren't allowed engine changes
Have a look on the site at regs but be good to have you there next year

Just spent the last 45mins reading the regs and rules. Sounds like my car is legible but I'd need to colour the earth lead for the battery and I'd want to fit a plumbed in extinguisher.

So where do I sign up!

Will you be going to Cadwell in November? I might go up there to see what it's all about.
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on July 27, 2015, 23:37
Yup you are good to go
I will be at Caldwell
Read the terms of Cadwell park as its offered first to people who have competed earlier in the year first and if spaces are left then new comers can sign on
When you purchase a round you also must purchase a sticker sponsor pack which all cars must wear or you cannot score points
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: Anonymous on July 28, 2015, 09:52
I think Cadwell is the only event I can make regardless of participation or viewing. I've emailed the guy who seems to coordinate things called Adrian with a few questions.

Where did you get your sponsorship sticker pack from then, I didn't see that mentioned anywhere?

At the moment it's my plan to join in next year, I need to get miles on my car first and get this gearbox noise fixed, which will probably end up in a replacement gearbox.

Thanks for making me take the plunge  s:) :) s:)

When you book the event there is the option for sticker pack or buy it on the day, contains all the decals for your car from the sponsors. Basically if you don't wear them you cannot score the points .
I've paid for mine and will have them on the day
Yeah don't rush in and risk more issues just sign up for a full year next year as I shall be but I think next year I'm going to drop to d pro in a yaris or hatchback of similar as it will be cheaper for me than carting the oil burner everywhere
Thinking of building an iq or aygo at the moment

Oh ok I see, thanks.

I'm planning on coming to Cadwel to watch and learn etc, but I won't participate.

depending on weather I may drive the mr2 and get them to look it over and point out anything I may wish to do.

You should just spend the money on fixing the mr2 rather than starting again! Then we can be in the same group  s:D :D s:D

The mr2 will stay but I fancy building something else too haha

Or do half the season in the new car and half in the mr2

Get a new aygo £99pm and drive the cack out of it

The mr2 will have more toys but no more power I'm really 100% not going to engine change or turbo It's gonna be big brake kit next when the brakes need doing

Plus I need to empty my garage from when we moved in I still haven't made it into the man cave haha

you could just replace the smokey 1zz for a good one...but as long as you are having fun that's all that matters.

I'll come and see you and the TSS team at Cadwell  s:) :) s:)

That be good mark as we keep saying we will cross paths
The car seems to be fine now it was just the 0 ring leaking badly
So now she's sweet and no loss of oil so I assume its not burning but yeah if worst comes to worst I'll replace it with another 1zz

So the spending continues
New front drop links
New rear drop links
Hel braided brake lines
New brake fluid
New rear caliper
Fuel dump and spout

I just can't wait to get back on track it's only been 3 months but feels like a life time

Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on August 18, 2015, 12:26
Amazing !
Hard though
No sighting laps so didn't know the circuit so just had to go for it so span out on first go haha
I was so out gunned so beating some gt4 celicas and mr2 turbo was good consideringy spec is poor I'm very happy
Roll on the next round
Only had 6 runs as it was so busy and the noise restrictions made us have to have breaks
Considering I have no power and just lowering springs and never having been to croft then just had to compete It went well plus my spin braking into tower bend at speed really woke me up
Track was slippery and we lost a celica gt4 in the first run and had many spinners.
Tyres struggle to warm as do brakes so it's so different compared to track days where everything gets to warm up but I'm hooked
Car looks awesome with stickers at the race track but proper chav on the road lmao

great to hear! do you have any pictures from the event? how many were in your class?
Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on August 18, 2015, 13:04
I do but on the missus camera
Two more in my class both quicker and both had more power and bigger spec than me and more importantly experience of croft plus Pete is a cracking driver and last years group winner but I'm happy not to of been last over all
I think some extra weight saving may help for the next round and I need more corners as straight line isn't my cars forte
Cracking people all round and I was 0.23 seconds off the gt86 ahead of me , so close

Blyton next but can't wait for cadwell  :-) :-) :-)
I was going to upgrade my calipers but it was hard getting heat into the yellows so will stick for now.
Come down I don't expect to be good there as its 8 runs to learn it but I'll have a go and I'm sure you can tell me what it's like at cadwell

The stickers must be on or you can't score points but apart from your door numbers you can stick them where ever aslong as they are displayed

Me and the missus just spread them out but made sure they were symmetrical
I was running some gt4 play ones also as he's been good to me
I hate stickers but felt wierd not having any on when I arrived at the hotel haha my car stood out as the noob a mile off

Title: Re: Mr Stev3's track day roadster
Post by: MrStev3 on August 28, 2015, 14:23
Some gt86 were slow some were fast
Some had superchargers and some turbo chargers and some n/a
The overal winner was fensports turbo one and second was fensports n/a one
Third was a celica gt4

0.23 seconds quicker than me was a gt86

It was hard to go out and smash in 6 competive runs with no sighting runs when I didn't know the circuit at all but I still had a better time than some impressive machinery

The gt86 to me is a beauty though

I'd like to see a new mr2 and a new celica
The celica t sport can be quite the weapon and one if the guys I met had a 190 supercharge he only pulled 3 seconds a run quicker than me and he had double my power , huge brakes and coilovers
When I consider how crap my spec is there's so much room for improvement so roll on the next round.

The gt86 spins around lovely too haha was the best car I saw spin so graceful compared to my spin   s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:

Hotel is booked but next week I hope to have some free time from work to put a further diet into the car too make up for my short coming in power

Since I changed the "o" ring I have been able to see if it's burning oil or just losing it as to the leak.
Well I drove from swansea to croft circuit, did the sprint and drove it home and didn't have to put a drop of oil in it lets hope I'm not tempting fate.

Well it's at that stage where it's hard to lose weight but I still have the steering wheel and air bag to be changed and well the rest of the weight will come from myself but also a few cheeky places in the car

I have literally just seconds ago sorted out cadwell and so cadwell is final now and I shall be there, hotel is yet to be sorted but will stay with the rest of the tss guys as normal.

I won't do much else between now and the end of the month but enjoy the car.

Looking at a track day on my birthday at brands too.

Coilovers really do look likely though and I'll be going to sort that as soon as the money comes

Do you think a changing of steering wheel will improve the feel of the car? I know I enjoyed the smaller feel of my previous car, but wonder whether changing the steering wheel in an MR2 will have much effect?

All the grams add up and the airbag is heavy I imagine.

Great thread mate. Love your desire and dedication. I too love being the underdog, I've given a few people a shock already with my little sleeper  s:D :D s:D  If I ever come down south we'll need to catch up for a cheeky track day.   s8) 8) s8)

Have you always used the staggered setup tyre wise and wheel wise? Most of the tracks I'll be doing are really short and I prefer to steer from the rear so was thinking of sticking 15s on with the same size tyres all round. (Don't want to cause another war here btw!) I've got a friend who gives us a good discount on MaxxSport tyres for the racing, and supplies most of the mx5 guys up here, so was thinking about using his tyre range of 15s.

thanks man I appreciate the kind words.
I've had so much fun building and driving it and now with the sprinting.
I've decided that I'll stick wit the 1zz and try to make up the difference in weight loss and balls haha
At my last sprint I ran 205 all round and it was pants as I couldn't get heat into the front tyres to make them work over such a short distance but usually I keep it staggered.
I'm hoping to do a test day next week to see the results more clearly but I'll be going back to 195 front for blyton sprint.

I'm thinking next year of trying to eek some more horses out of the 1zz even though I know it's expensive for little gain.

Have some parts not fitted right now but work comes first

Nice. Thanks for the input. That's something I hadn't thought about in regards to trying to get heat into 205s in such a short distance.

I'm kind of stuck though and would appreciate your input. Would the following tyres sizes be ok to run as staggered? Keep 15s all round or go staggered, and is the 185 too narrow for the front?

185/55R15
205/55R15

195/45R16
205/50R16

Also, any idea on the weight of yours as is?
Title: Re: My 2001 Silver MR2 - Mr Stev3's track day now sprint roa

I run 195/50/15 and 205/50/15 and it handles excellent but heat was an issue as I said when using a bigger tyre upfront.

I don't know how much she weighs as there's no interior but cage was added which brings the weight up a bit, heat shields , nappy, under plastics, doors cut out etc so I've lost the weight where ever I could but it's mich quicker than the standard model as I have one as a daily and the difference in acceleration and corner grip and days apart

Cheers mate. Think I'm gonna steal a set of 185/55/15 from my step mum's mx-5 and try them out on the next test day.

Give them back to her bald haha

Well just over a week to go to the next round and I'm swamped in work so really haven't done much but I think next week I shall be trying hard to rectify this.

I'm looking to book a test day next week also so I can figure out what is best for me over the short run tyres wise in different combos.

I have just got whiteline camber bolts form gt4-play so will hopefully get them on along with my braided lines I got from him.

Will bleed the system then with nice new fluid .

Well next week I shall be testing at Llandow on a testing day with Motorsport teams should be epic.
As before the last round of tss I hadn't been in the car at a circuit for 4 months so this time I will have a feel for the car again
I'll take some pictures and there should be some tasty machinery there.
I'll be doing short 2 lap stints to get a sprint feel as lap after lap isn't realistic as the grip levels are higher then

plus the Welsh sprint series has rounds there too and i did my first track day there so all good

I had the whole circuit to myself I mean I was the only car there for testing today at Llandow it was excellent gave me a chance to iron out my flaws with no traffic.

Learnt a lot today about why the car under steered So badly at Croft Circuit for the sprint race.
I removed the spare wheel from under the bonnet which I've not done before on my track days and always had great grip so when at croft I had an understeery mess I was confused and irritated. anyway at Llandow today I tried laps with and without the spare wheel up front over the wheels and the difference is crazy.
205 tyres up front with no weight over the front axle was even worse than the 195 pushing the front wide.
205 all round 28psi front and 32psi rear was the golden combo with the spare over the front wheels the grip was back and I could point and squirt it any direction

May seem obvious to some but I never thought the small weight the spare gives over the front wheels could make such an impact but it actually does
Car felt beastly

I've never had understeer with the 205s and no spare in the front, funny how these cars seem to behave differently.

Sounds like a very useful day, mad that you had the place to yourself!

When is the next sprint, is it Blyton?
Title: Re: My 2001 Silver MR2 - Mr Stev3's track day now sprint roa
Post by: MrStev3 on September 23, 2015, 19:49
I never thought it either mark but the difference was scarey and I did stints so the car was starting on cold tyres each time I tested but the front was washing wide wothout that tyre on the there so I may go ballast tank in place of the frunk.

Yup I had the whole circuit to myself so I could test it under sprint rules per say

Short two lap sessions and then later when I had the perfect setting I did some longer stints

Llandow runs 2 rounds of the Welsh sprint championship so was also good practice for that next year.

I was irritated at croft cos the car was not what I was used too, it was like that dream common to many , where you are trying to run but you can't and feel helpless. That's what it was like but today put some confidence back in my saddle when I realised there was reasoning.

Blyton is Sunday so let's hope today translates

Brilliant days testing then, that's what it's all about. Ive got my battery in the frunk I guess that helps. It's small, but still quite heavy.

Good luck on Sunday, post how you get on!

Sorry for the late reply Ive been ill and also very busy.
cracking weekend battling in the 2zz group of cars and a 3sge. car was much more on the pace but still struggled to beat the two guys in my class both with bigger motors with the long sprints to the start and finish this is where I lost out. Cadwell park next. people keep saying to get coilovers but right now I don't have the funds and also im looking to next year.

just a few pictures of the 45 competetors, there were over 12 gt-86, a hell of a lot of gt4 celicas but lots of variations: yaris t sports, mr2, celica st, corolla 1.3, yaris hybrid, starlets, supercharged mk1 mr2 and a supercharged celica gen 7 driven by a great guy called joe, my aim was to get close to him and I managed to pull a quicker run than him after being close at croft and him blowing me away on the few final runs. cracking guy and welcomed me as a newb haha

Quicky update again

My mot is booked for Wednesday so fingers crossed that goes ok, but if not I have 4 weeks before cadwell park to fix it.

Once the season is over I will de sticker the car and work on it for the next year unless I decide to move classes which I have considered but selling or braking would then be required and I don't really want to do that.

I'm really looking forward to cadwell park for the final sprint of the year looks epic fun and I'll be watching some videos so I know what I'm doing roughly or maybe I'll try and play some project cars as I believe the track is on that game.

Some drivers have the course layout on their dash or steering wheel which Is a good idea if you are new to a track such as me

My pc is so crap that it will have to be console games for me but it's still practice   s:D :D s:D

Today I have sat down and done some maths about parts for more power and suspension and decided that for the gains the cost isn't worth doing so it's with great sadness that after cadwell park I will test the water with selling this and get onto building my new car for sprinting next year

I have two mr2s so I shall still be here with my road one, this is not final yet but I have enquired on parts for the new car with Stephen at gt-4 play already

Before the vultures come circling haha I'm not breaking this and still have some racing to get her through

Maybe cadwell will change my mind

Hey Matt

I take part in the toyota sprint series , I started this year from round 4 and I've convinced mark or Meeerrrkk to compete in the final round in his 2zz mr2 so should be fun
The last round is at cadwell 7th November

Well I've been mega busy with cadwell finals for the tss just over a week away.

Changed all the fluids, got myself a small sponsor and also decided to put in a track day for the mr2 people for next year. Details can be found in the Motorsport section.

Car passed its mot so here's to another year of her being alive.

I have been made an offer on this car but I'm holding out and weighing up the options as I'm very attached to this little car

As many know I have another mr2 so I'll never be without I like them to much.

Photos and pics from cadwell to follow

Sorry for the lack of updates

I adored cadwell park but the federal 595 rsr have a E Rating in the wet so I knew things would get interesting.
I went off track twice at park and also had a spin. Rain was relentless all day but still didn't stop me enjoying
So I finished 3rd in class for the year only having done a few rounds.
In all honesty the car just doesn't have the power to mix it up near the front, if it were lap after lap then its got a chance but on a short squirt its just not got the power. really needs a 2zz but I can be arsed for hat mess
If anyone is bothered my friend Meeeerrrrkk won the class on the day in his 2zz , awesome specced car.
So I have put her up for sale and if not I will break it, ill be moving on
anyway heres some pics
