Title: Black TTE MR2 from Poland
Post by: Tewje on December 16, 2015, 14:28
Hi All!

Six months ago I finally made the decision and bought mr2. It's my second car (for longer distances I have BMW E91 320d) and it's brilliant! Tons of fun during every ride. I made almost 10 k km in 6 months which is a lot for a car which was bought as a weekend car.

So, it's a 2000 car with clean history but with some minor scrathes. It had 150 000 km still with pre cats. It was my first improvement - to remove precats.

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/1_zpsjkzee449.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/1_zpsjkzee449.jpg.html)

It was branded with TRD logos. I don't like such ideas so I removed them in first week.

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/3_zpspcvjjw0w.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/3_zpspcvjjw0w.jpg.html)

16' wheels were chinese. Although they looked good I decided to change them in near future.

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/2_zpstwpn7vbn.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/2_zpstwpn7vbn.jpg.html)

So that's how my car looked like in my first 2 weeks of ownership.

Looks in great condition! Really want mine to look that shiny!

First thing was precats. Than I've changed OEM exhaust to dual powerflow one. Sounds great. You can hear massive deep noise from 2 rpm. Of course it makes long journeys almost impossible but hey! it's a street fighter not long distance limo.

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/6_zpsx5m44c16.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/6_zpsx5m44c16.jpg.html)

I didn't like chrome interior additions so I painted central console and arm rests in black

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/4_zpscymv8arj.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/4_zpscymv8arj.jpg.html)

I still have pre facelift radio what drives me crazy - all dashboard lights are amber so green lighted cd player looks ridicules. Need to change it in near future

At this point my last upgreade were lowering springs. 30 mm makes a huge difference

What I always liked was red badge on black car. So here it is - red Toyota badge from Celica TS.

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/DSC06085_zps8ri9iv79.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/DSC06085_zps8ri9iv79.jpg.html)

After 3 months of searching I finally bought a duck tail. Looks great!

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/DSC06058_zpsep57pvjo.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/DSC06058_zpsep57pvjo.jpg.html)

From the very beginning I knew that my mr2 must have 17' TTE wheels. For sure they are bit heavy and very sensitive for all rough roads but they look amazing

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/DSC06063_zpstdztgezu.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/DSC06063_zpstdztgezu.jpg.html)

I also changed front badge from TRD to standard toyota one.

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/DSC06066_zps8ops8qov.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/DSC06066_zps8ops8qov.jpg.html)

TRD short shifter was another mandatory upgreade. I also put TRD logo on steering wheel

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/DSC06071_zpsgf9ksfoc.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/DSC06071_zpsgf9ksfoc.jpg.html)

I also upgreated front lights. They are now xenon lights. Taken from VW Passat. Works fine.
And I've changed side vents for FL ones. I'm not convinced about that modification.

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/DSC06076_zpsc7ba4evq.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/DSC06076_zpsc7ba4evq.jpg.html)

That is all for now. Since my last photo session I bought hardtop, yellow HEL Braided Brake Lines and OEM carbon fibre kick plates.
I'll update my gallery soon.

I need to buy new soft top before next season. And I'm still looking for TTE style bar. In next 2 years I hope to go turbo.  Hope you like it!

V max with soft top - 135 mph
V max without soft top - 130 mph
V max with hardtop - 128 mph
0-60 mph - 7,4 sec

7mph slower because of a hardtop? I don't believe that.. How was that difference calculated?

It's from Seat Leon Cupra R I gen.

About V max - Hard top is like 20 kg more plus. There could be few other external factors - f.ex stronger wind ect. These are just my records.

Welcome.
It' s good to know that a 2000 model has not suffered the oval bore problem.
I' m guessing that it had regular oil changes/ a good service history.
I notice you have fitted HEL brake lines.
Did you have any problem fixing the hoses to the fixing bracket on your car?
In the " What have you done to your 2 today" thread in chit chat and gossip a problem with the fixing couple has been discussed.
Apparently a long standing " problem" but the manufacturer had not been informed!
Enjoy your 2.

Few things has changed since my last post.
My mr2 is no more a roadster - now it's a coupe, so hardtop mode on.

Looks great. Even better than cabrio.

I've changed two minor things recently.

1. Door sills with MR2 sticker. Standard one always look incomplete for me

2. I moved licence plate on grill. I hope that it would help me to avoid few tickets.

Finally. After 4 months of ebay explorations and one month after purchase I mounted the famous TTE style bar.
Before that I powder painted it in black.

Drilling holes was easy

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/12773047_10153570295283090_2026201823_o_zps7titr7xf.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/12773047_10153570295283090_2026201823_o_zps7titr7xf.jpg.html)

Rubber rings were a pain in the ass!

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/12776809_10153570295213090_1659068709_o_zpsvixfpuwr.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/12776809_10153570295213090_1659068709_o_zpsvixfpuwr.jpg.html)

Now my MR2 looks like that. I'll take better pictures (these are from iPhone) next week.

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/12772910_10153570294953090_1974692234_o_zps8tfbp0jj.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/12772910_10153570294953090_1974692234_o_zps8tfbp0jj.jpg.html)

Now I need to buy a new roof. Any suggestions where can I buy the best aftermarket one?

One more - minor change. I'm not 100% convince that it would stay with me for ever but for now - it looks ok

It's a engine lid mesh. Black one. Bought for 5 pounds in tuning shop

(http://i1375.photobucket.com/albums/ag449/Tewje_Wojdstein/IMG_4887_zps7k6r5s6b.jpg) (http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/Tewje_Wojdstein/media/IMG_4887_zps7k6r5s6b.jpg.html)

Looks like that. Better pictures soon. It's very easy to install. Took 1 hour.

Oem one. If you want a mohair one than there is a guy in Swansea that does is for £275 in a day. But that's a no go for you. Depends on how much you want to spend, but I guess a work around could be to buy a cheap working frame and get him to fit it for you and then deliver it over. I'm not sure there is such thing as an "aftermarket" hood that's off the shelf.

Post by: Tewje on November 25, 2016, 13:59
It's been long time since my last post. My MR2 has changed a bit. My aim was to create a full TTE version of my car with few extra bits. So MR2 TTE +
First thing are yellow seats and door panels. Very rare and very hard to keep clean.

Than I flocked the central tunnel, glove box, central console cover and storage space behind the seats.

I bought few TTE accesories:
-17' wheels,
-rear bumper inserts
-side vents
-front bumper
-style bar (painted in black)
-chrome ring (painted it in black but it've lost it's shape! I can't fit it now!)
-lowering springs
-Exhaust

The only thing I want from TTE package that I don't have right now is turbo...
Now my car looks like that:

[imghttps://s21.postimg.org/qmmvy2huv/DSC00497.jpg[/img]

I've also changed aerial - from electric one to standard model. It's now black and can't broke - cheaper and better option.
Last thing from exterior and interior mods I'd like to add is light in glovebox. Will do that in next two weeks. And it would be the end of my story....

...untill next year. I must think about new soft top.

Hope you like it!

I've got TTE banana spoiler from Dick but It's still in bodyshop. But you are right. There was a lot more accessories from TTE: gear knob, central console plates, chrome rings around gauges ect. Now I need to focus on mechanical part. Front and rear strut bars, braces and turbo or 2zz conv.
About the 16' wheels. It's more or less 5 kg!

5kg is very light. Even lighter than my supposedly lightweight wheels. Are you certain? Is the balance you used within calibration?
I am slightly sceptical as TTE wheels have a reputation for being heavier than stock.

I'd like to go turbo. But in the TTE style-so I want to make the exact copy of all TTE turbo components. Thanks to Arthur L. I've read a lot of stuff about it. I know that turbocharger is very easy to buy (same as in SAAB 9000-around 100£ in Poland), but there are also IC, fan, manifold, ecu and pipes. Anyone has an idea where I can buy them? Did they existed in other models than mr2 (like turbocharger)?

As polish winter is full of snow my MR2 is still in tuner shop where my TTE (Tewje Turbo Edition) turbo it is building.
They replaced my 5 speed gearbox with 5 speed LSD one.

My turbo kit would be ready around 12.03

I've also received front strut brace and  Mattperformance X brace as well painted in black. I think that fitting braces is very important when you want to go turbo.

Now, I need your help guys. As I want to have my mr2 in perfect condition I need to replace my soft top which is very tired after 16 years. I wanted to buy a soft top from Jack Smith from Swansea. I called him yesterday and he told me that it could be a problem to fit it by myself (in fact I want to leave it to one of local trimmers in Poland). And he recommended me  m http://allhoodsltd.com/ (http://allhoodsltd.com/) m  from Essex. I've got 3 questions

1. Have any of you fitted J.S soft top by himself?
2. Do you have any comments about All Hoods Limited roofs quality?
3. Can you compare value for money - J.C vs All hoods?

I want to buy the best mohair roof for my mr2 I can so any opinions would be usefull

Plenty have bought from Jack Smith, but they usually buy the installation as part of the package.
I don't know anyone who bought the hood from Jack Smith to fit DIY style though.
I'm a bit surprised by the lack of feedback from Mohair hood owners though. Perhaps try posting in the mohair soft top thread.

Done it already!!

Thanx Mr.Super

As 99% of Mr2's mine had holes in rear crossmember.

So I welded the hole and powder coated it in shining black

I'll start assembling turbo kit tomorrow. That is why I made last tests of my stock car. Firstly, I've checked it's balance and weight. Car is heavy - hard top, aftermarket audio set up, style bar, 17 inch wheels, A/C plus a lot of silent mats fitted inside doors.

After that I made dyno test. Looks ok.

Hope that next one would show 190 HP and 255 nM

Looks wise, one of my favorite cars here. Love that interior combination. The duck tail just sets off the rear, in my opinion..

Hopefully mine can look half as good one day!

I'm on a last straight line of TTE rebuild project. Almost 95% of work has been done. Last two things are: assembling blow off DV and tuning my car. Hope I would test drive my mr on saturday.
This is the photo I received directly from garage

Of course story doesn't end here. Next steps would be: new roof, fl underbody brace and light in glove box.

Grande Finale!

My own version of TTE kit is finally ready. After two months of work and hundreds of articles/forums read my MR2 in it's final shape.
I always wanted to have TTE version so when I bought my car two years ago (without a single TTE feature...) I knew that someday it must look like authentic TTE one.

Chrome design gear knob cover. Painted in black as most of my additions

Flocked rear trunk doors and bins. Previousy I flocked arm rests, central tunnel and dash cover plus inside of glove box. Rear trunk was the last part of my flocked concept. Looks great, is very silence but for sure it needs much more care than plastic.

TTE spoiler. I like it a lot. Looks amazing with hardtop and even better with soft top. Because of it my previous duck tail spoiler is for sale. If you're interested - just PM me.

It's a "goodbye" for my hardtop. Day after this session soft top days has come.

Yellow fabric is a real pain in the a.. if you want to have a clean interior. Need to wash it every 2 weeks.

Stock interior is a good interior.

Electric antenna was a crap. Conventional one works perfect.

Red Toyota's badge has finally got its justification. 188 HP.

Turbo kit. Same as TTE. 188 HP and 247 nM

Really like the sound of blow off DV

Fuel cap is waiting for TTE chrome ring.
Will be mounted very soon.

Small license plate is illegal in Poland. But it looks so cool that I can take a risk.

My car now is almost finished. Just chrome ring, bigger injections (2zz ones) and mohair roof. And that would it. I mean that won't be the end but just the beginning of my future journeys with one of the cheapest "drivers cars" and "fun cars" ever made.

This is my favourite "reader's ride" blog. A lot of time, effort and coin went into this build, well done man.
Now you can start having adventures in it!

Thanks a lot guys. I'm glad that you like it. I changed soft top yesterday. It's a used mohair in poor condition so needs some treatment and cleaning before I take better pictures

Stats...

1. Total weight of my stock mr2 without turbo but with hardtop. Almost perfectly balanced car

2. With turbo and hardtop

3. Turbo without hardtop. Looks ok but it would be good if I move battery on front.

4. Final dyno tests with turbo

Few things since my last post has changed. Firstly I finally have my new roof fitted. It's mohair one-much better than our standard vinyls. Photos would arrive soon.

I found real gems - TTE chicane wheels. Need to paint them-refresh in fact and put my new Hankook ventus v12 tyres on.

My old 17 TTE wheels are for sale now.

These are the good news. There are bad as well. I still have got problems with my turbo.
1. Lambda error - needed to buy an emulator. No check engine sign anymore
2. I've got small leak from oil pipe. One that goes from turbo to oil sump. Now it's ok.
3. My downpipe has broken. I think that my tuner made it poorly. He tries to convince me that I hit a stone or sth. Can't judge it but now downpipe has few supports that are mounted to engine.
4. I've got a strange power break around 4,5 k rpm during full throttle runs. It was piggyback fault. Program has been changed and now it works ok

Till yesterday.... I've noticed huge power drop from 1 k rpm to 4,5-5 rpm. My car was doing 95 km/h on second gear (105 km/h when it was 188 hp), and sprint from 0-60 mph took 7 comparing to 5,9 when it was ok.
I went to check my power and that is the result

Now my car is in tuners garage-they are checking what is wrong with it. But as I still had problems with my tuner our relations are harsh. I'm afraid that he would be trying to find a problem elsewhere- not in his job.
I can hear ping during acceleration - as some air masses are going out of the turbo. Whole situation with my car drives me crazy. It more often in garage than on the road.
Tuner argues that TTE intercooler is a very bad idea (height temp in intake system) and my injections work 100% efficiency. That is why this car is so fragile. What do you think about it?
Sorry for my English!

Few new items have come so it's high time for new photos.

1. Very rare TTE chicane wheels. Plus TTE turbo sticker. And outstanding hankook tyres!

2. TTE chrome ring painted black

3. Armrest covered by original fabric. Same as on seats

4. Few shots of my mr2. But more interesting is swimming pool at the background. Good architecture from late 60'

I really hope that I can control myself and can stop buying new things every month. For sure I'd upgrade turbo by adding 2zzw injections and removing catalyst. And that would be all. Grande finale!

Terrific looking car man. Love the attention to detail!
Did you get the stuff sorted with your tuner?
Title: Re: Black TTE MR2 from Poland
Post by: Tewje on June 14, 2017, 13:36
Thx!
Nice to ready that!
I can say that I solved 90% problems with my tuner. Car is quick, has power (188 HP) so I'm ok.
But there is still one thing - exhaust sound. It's very dissapointing. Very metallic - no bass at all.

Post by: jvanzyl on June 14, 2017, 13:54
No seriously, your car is a fantastic example  :-) :-) :-)

Good to hear about the issues getting solved! Deeper than a TTE exhaust... Hmm... Some kind of resonator maybe?
Title: Re: Black TTE MR2 from Poland
Post by: Tewje on June 14, 2017, 14:03
Exhaust is very silent. I can hear turbo whistle and, as you said, something resonates. I can hear that on high revs for the time when engine is cold.
Need to record that and post here
