Just a quick question on this, has anyone '1.5ZZed' their engine at all - what I mean is put a 2ZZ lift head on the 1ZZ block? I know it has been done on the 1JZ and 2JZ engines where its usually a 2JZ bottom end and a 1JZ head - just occurred to me that as they are the same ZZ block it might have been done.
When I do get my project car I will be looking to do a full 2ZZ swap, however having a stock 1ZZ block and a 2ZZ head running a 2ZZ ECU to control the lift might be a cheaper 'halfway house' for someone giving the benefit of the lift head but not needing to go with a full blown conversion (or indeed need to take the engine out).
Just occurred to me when walking home from work today.
I was thinking this while sitting in traffic on the A12 this morning
I would think it's not an easy option or everyone would be doing it
2zz has different stroke. different crank. 2zz valves don't clear the 1zz pistons.
Given the wider bore on 2zz, would the 2zz valves even clear the 1zz block?

They put 1mz heads on 3mz blocks overn in the US to.
Ah ok, forgot about the different bore etc, wonder if you could swap the 2zz head internal parts like the camshaft and lift parts into a 1zz head. Would still need to check clearances with regards to the extra valve lift but that could be another way.

Nah, they're massively different. Massively. It's just a 'derivative' engine, really. 2ZZ has different cylinder material (Ceramic metal matrix, really quite sexy space age stuff) and the Head is just totally different, you'd lose all the benefit of yamahas high flow design - not that the bits would would fit anyway.
I actually think it would be less owrk fitting the whole 2ZZ than faffing trying to swap just the head, even if it did work.
Well at least that's good to know, I'm a complete newbie but am always interested in what parts might interchange between engines.

One of my earliest questions on here was concerning why the 2zz was labelled Yamaha!
So, as the 1zz was an in MrT' s house design and the 2 zz was designed in Mr Y' s house it's not unreasonable to find they have little or no commonality.
Yamaha only designed the cylinder head, as per the 3S-GTE amongst others.
Why would you go to the trouble of building a 1.5ZZ anyway? It's more work for less BHP.
