Title: Meet Maureen she's a Silver 04
Post by: Garfy on April 23, 2017, 19:04
Think I've got it, this thread is basically "what have you done to your MR2 today" or a digest of progress or lack of change.

Well, last year I decided I wanted another mid engine car, previously I bought the G/F an MGF and ended up driving it more than her.
Drove it across France through the Pyrenees mountain around the edge of Spain, boarded a ferry and ended up in Gran Canaria for around five years.

My thoughts last year were as I'm turning 50 this year I need a two seater again   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:  . My daily drive was Kia Magentis with 60K on the clock, the plan is Maureen for the summer and Kia for the winter.
Started looking at cars last year and reading, was looking for 2 seats, mid range, reliable and fun.
The MR2 came out tops imho.

Joined this site, asked a few questions, went and have a drive in someone else's MR2, decided yes please, I want one.
Found Maureen on this site, went to have a look. Everything looked good so in December 16 went and bought it, drove it for a week and placed it in storage until April when the Kia broke down.
She's silver, has 52k on the clock, when I bought her she had two Yokohama's on the front, a falken and another different tyre on the rear.
Title: So what were my expectations/plans
Post by: Garfy on April 23, 2017, 19:22
Reading through I decided I don't want to go down the route of turbo or increasing the BHP, I would like to see what can be done with the stock engine and possibly a few MODs.
My initial thoughts were new lighter alloys (the stock ones are pretty mashed up and not pretty), I like my acceleration so a lightened fly wheel with possibly a stage 2 clutch, K&N air filter (cause I like the sound), pushy out air vents on the side to get more cold air into the engine bay (I have assumed these would do this). I like the look of style bars so I wanted one. The fog lights look like a scene from the moon but still work. Matching tyres all around.

On a personal note, I have worked on engines but am more used to things going wrong than right. Therefore with no tools and the aim is not to kill the car, I go down the route of going to a mechanic for mechanical issues.

What have I done since I got Maureen.
Paid through the nose for a "frenzy style bar" to be sent from the US and fitted that, but I am pleased with the look.
Had two Yokohama AD09's fitted to the rear.
Had a 50,000 service by a local mechanic.
Had a new radiator fitted as the old one started spraying stuff all over the place.

Due to some of the above this has pushed the lightened fly wheel back a little while, not sure how long this will be now as I have since found other issues   s:scared: :scared: s:scared:

Finally had some time to attempt the rudimentary stuff.
Cleaned the MAF and reset the ECU
Attempted restoration on one of the headlights, improved it but not a lot of change so believe the issue will be inside the headlight   s:cry:  s:cry:
Took the cover underneath the hood off to find the attached   s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:
Have been informed I will need a new one and have been in touch with a supplier, I get paid on Friday but feel the flywheel slipping further away    s:( :( s:(

Today I decided to have a go at a calliper, Jack up, wheel off, wire brush, wash down with thinners, two coats of paint on the calliper and back together.
Fours hours, three more to do   s:scared: :scared: s:scared:
Now you can see the state of the wheels with the attached files   s:lol:  s:lol:   ia1 CalliperPre.jpg ia1 [/attachment:wixeygn0] ia2 CalliperPost.jpg ia2 [/attachment:wixeygn0] ia0 CalliperWheel.jpg ia0 [/attachment:wixeygn0]

Today I received a new UJ and some hel brake pipes   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:  got to save now to get them put on.
Was thinking, if I change the UJ and get to go  around corners, I'd better have the ability to stop as well   s:roll:  s:roll:

Can help with the brakes if you want... but there's only so much you can do without taking them fully apart/ renewing the calipers...

s:bowdown:  s:bowdown:  Thank  you for the offer sir, I may take you up on it.
Today possibly, on with calliper cleaning (weather dependant)

s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:  2nd calliper cleaned and painted, 150 mile round trip to Crawley and back on Sunday. The G/F drove it back due to the evaporation of a decent brandy with an old friend.
She says she enjoyed the ride   s:shock:  s:shock:

Two more callipers to paint, HEL brake pipes to swap, UJ to be replaced, fog lights to be replaced, gear change  bushings to be replaced and I'd like to polish it sometime.
This starts to become a full time job   s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:

Full time job is necessary to support the full time mods that will be inevitable!!!  s;-) ;-) s;-)

Third Calliper painted today   s:D :D s:D  Not fantastic, but better than what they were. Hope to get a dremel type thing one day and take it back to bare metal before painting them up.
May push the boat out and attempt the last one tomorrow (also gets me out of the way of baby sitting   s:shock:  s:shock:  )
Could also attempt to take rear light clusters off, to clean out condensation. (if said baby sitting becomes protracted   s:( :( s:(  )
Or maybe just involve seven year old girl in removing wheel.

Only thing, I couldn't undo the rear wheel nuts by hand or standing/jumping on the wheel spanner (would have been stuffed with a puncture), ended up removing the pole that the washing line sits in to get some better leverage.
Unfortunately the washing line now sits at an angle (not sure if the G/F will notice as I normally put the washing out)   s:scared: :scared: s:scared:

My kids love to get involved in working on the car.  s:-D :-D s:-D

Post by: Garfy on May 28, 2017, 17:45
Finally managed to get the last calliper painted   s:D :D s:D  but it was made easier by having to get it replaced as the old one was binding and heating the brake disc   s:roll:  s:roll:
Also paid to get the brake pipes replaced with the HEL ones I had sourced, time to start saving again and chip away at my credit card bill, whilst I look for what I would like to do next   s8) 8) s8)

Unfortunately i think that will be it for this year unless I get a winfall somewhere   s:cry:  s:cry:
Already been an expensive year , have to chip away at the credit card for a little while   s:) :) s:)
So now only little things I can do on my own and enjoy the drive   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:

Well I bought a new manifold (thought it time to get rid of the pre-cats) and wanted to lose the heat shield as well because I think it's one of the rattles   s:? :? s:?
So today I gave it a go at wrapping said manifold. Watched a few youtube videos, asked for help here and this is what I came up with   s:wink:  s:wink:

You not going to have a go yourself?
Can do this with a couple of stands or some ramps.

Post by: m1tch on July 19, 2017, 17:08
You should be able to do it yourself, you can see where all the bolts are meant to go, start soaking them now and it shouldn't be too hard - the way I think about working on cars is that they were built on a factory production line so are meant to be simple to bolt together. Usual things that cause issues I have found so far is access and rusted bolts - always good to dig into the car especially if its not a daily drive and take your time over it.

s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:  Currently it is my daily drive, even s,o I would give it a go (as I have a spare) IF this wasn't my COMPLETE tool kit   s:oops:  s:oops:
The heat shield bolts are soo rusted you can't make them out, but the main reason is, I'm used to  sfuck fuck sfuck ing things up over the years and it's took me 30 years to get this car.
I will attempt small jobs as my tool bag grows, otherwise leave it to the professionals   s:| :| s:|

That's pretty much how my toolbag was when I got this car. My confidence is growing everytime I pick up a spanner/screwdriver etc. The help from the forums has been awesome. You'll be out of your comfort zone in no time. It's just nuts and bolts really

I'd recommend a can of plusgas off of Amazon or drop down to Apsley motor spares... Start spraying the nuts with that every day (it'll smell a bit and "smoke" as your car heats up so don't worry) keep doing that for a few days and then try maybe remove the heat shield to start with?

In terms of tools that you'll need to work competently on your car you're going to need a set of spanners and realistically a socket set... I'm guessing you've got done screwdrivers already...I appreciate it's more money to spend, but you're car is still going fine so just accumulate them as time and budget allows...

In terms of recommendation the halfords advanced sets are good... Best to try and time it for when they have a special on.

Halfords advanced, like most other decent ones, are guaranteed for life.
No receipt needed. Just simply return and they'll swap them.

If you're going to Apsley Motor Spares, you might want some studs whilst you're there (that's where I got mine!)
He's a very helpful chap too.

The guy over this way  in Adeyfield (near my work) is good too, although he doesn't carry as much stock.

Oh yes, that put a smile on my face   s:D :D s:D
Throttle response nicer, sounds much throatier and the wrap smells good   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:
200 odd squid for manifold and fitting, almost as cheap as getting the cats removed   s:lol:  s:lol:

Had a go at the UJ over the weekend, tried to get at it with a wire brush but couldn't. Sprayed with WD40 and covered with grease.
Think it just looks bad although I have a spare brand new UJ ready (just in case)
Other than this, just been enjoying the drive   s:D :D s:D

Today I have fitted a new front registration plate (Courtesy of SWMBO,part of my birthday present   s:) :) s:)  )
Also fitted two Zun sport side vent grills.
Didn't quite go as planned (used to that), lost one of the clips fingys that hold vents in and needed to use a couple of cable ties, still, doesn't look too bad   s:o :o s:o

Put yours C style vents on today and SWMBO approves, as long as it's in silver   s:P :P s:P
I will put it on the to do list   s:| :| s:|
Need to find out the cost to get them sprayed and would really like mesh in the vents, this may have to be a home made one. If you look at the vents Nigel does, he has some pictures with a mesh in place.
When the side vents were removed there was no rubbish in the waste outlets   s:D :D s:D
So I have finished with yours John, thank you very much for the lend. Just need to get them back to you now   s:?: :?: s:?:

Had a quote to refurbish the alloys for just over £220, so that might be next, then Christmas, so the vents will probably be next year

Body person ready to help me put them on. Can't decide what induction kit  (:< >:)
Looking for sound but not too much.
May attempt to run a pipe up to the air vent with an enclosed filter, been looking at a BMC.

Only on the side scoops, use plenty of glue and rivets and 37 self tappers per scoop. And some more glue!

Front midship runaround badge has been fitted :)
This morning I picked up some second hand suspension with TTE lowering springs, now to save for new front and rear top mounts and some drop links before a refresh  :D
Suspension has done less than 4000 miles I'm informed, so should be a little firmer than my 58,000  :-)
Green air filter is on order and side scoops with mesh is imminent.
Everything looking like coming together for the summer  (:< >:)
Also had a nice ride in a 2004 sable with 2zz swap and a rotrex supercharger  :'( V.V.V. nice  :notworthy:

Picture isn't the best but those springs look in a bad way.
I took a set off a car with over 50k on it and they were still mostly powder coated black with TTE markings.
Title: Re: Meet Maureen she's a Silver 04
Post by: Garfy on March 10, 2018, 16:01
Yup, they are a little rusty.
Thought wire brush and a coat of hammerite would tidy them up.
I would have powder coated them but they are on the shocks, not sure how I'd get them off  :withstupid:
Title: Re: Meet Maureen she's a Silver 04
Post by: Garfy on March 17, 2018, 16:20
So here's a picture of the worst strut I'm using to replace my current suspension.

The springs are supposed to be TTE lowering springs.

My thoughts are to remove the springs, wire brush and hammerite or I have had a quote for around £10 a spring to blast and powdercoat, thoughts please ladies and gents.
Time and labour of my own to clean and hammerite, £60 tops to powdercoat or £120 for new springs?

Other thoughts, not sure how many miles these springs have done, do they degrade over time? Are these TTE springs one of the best for Maureen?
:-\

Secondly having nearly done 60,000 miles and with an advisory or rusty suspension, what else besides the struts should be replaced?
Thinking rear drop links, Top mounts front and back, would that be enough for a decent suspension refresh to last another 60,000  :D

Answers on a post card please, alternatively reply to me on here  :P

Fitted Mongo's, not sure they're in right :) are they supposed to angle into the car when the doors are shut?
Took the side vent out to look at where the cold air ducting will go, think I'll save that for a day when it's not raining. Ohhh to have a garage to work in  ;)

IIRC It's only the one nut to whip the spring off.
That's if you can get/borrow a set of spring compressors.

May make it easier to work on though.
Title: Re: Meet Maureen she's a Silver 04
Post by: Garfy on April 8, 2018, 12:06
Thanks Dan, your correct one nut.
Checked through on you tube, it can be removed without spring compressors, just stick a couple of towels over the end take of the strut to soak up the compression.
I did try this but I only have a normal ratchet and the inside just turns, believe you need a pneumatic burst type ratchet.
Hopefully this will be good enough, I wire brushed the spring as best I could and gave it three coats of direct to rust hammerrite  ::)

Been busy this morning, just set this up for connection tomorrow  :D

All struts cleaned and parts bought :) waiting on my friendly mechanic to become available (2-3 weeks).
Couple of questions if I may  :notworthy:

Is there a list of torque settings to be used on the suspension?

Once completed and after a week of bedding in I would like to get the car alignment checked, does anyone have any recommendations for where to get this done?

Would it be best to get new camber bolts before I get this done in which case would it be best to get these replaced whilst I'm doing the suspension?
Noticed the ones at the rear are a little rusty (do they have front ones?)

Flat by the time I got to work, thankfully 500M away.
Finally got to check at 15:00 this afternoon.

The picture looks like that's "Knife Crime"

Views on tyre repair seem to have changed over time.
At one time inner tubes were used on punctured tubeless tyres but I understand that only applied to cross ply tyres, now largely superseded by radials.
Similarly plugs were used, inserted from the outside, I last saw a plug used in the US nearly 20 years ago, even then I was surprised that it was still done.( But then again single grade oil was/ possibly  still is popular there. The Oil change depots seem to offer single grade oil but  change at more frequent intervals than we practice in the UK).
For radial tyres I understand that the position of the puncture is a determining factor, too near the side wall means the patch would be subject to flexing and part company with the tyre.
Technically I believe the patched tyre/ wheel should be rebalanced but then we don't drive high performance vehicles ;)

Passed MOT on Monday, no advisories  :-*
Apart from rear tyres that I knew about.

Nice thing was, I managed to talk to the tester and mentioned the rust underneath at the front end, he said, if I treat it the way I have done at the rear it won't be a problem.

Well chuffed with that, good to hear that something you did was up to scratch, especially, when I had no idea what I was doing  :o

Now I know what I'm doing next spring/summer IF I can work out how to get the front end up on the ramps?

Time to start cleaning up under the front, first thing is to clean up second hand power steering pipes.
Easily done in the kitchen I hope as this is my garage  (:< >:)

Gotta find a couple of scaffold planks then :) lucky there's a lot of scaffolders come into the café I work in.

Now before I go any further with cleaning up the power steering pipes, can anyone tell me if there is any difference in these?

SPA is a picture of a brand new set, SPB is a picture of the second hand set I bought.

They don't quite look the same?? Could this be because the set I bought has been on the vehicle and hence bent into place OR could I have the incorrect pipes  :'(

Pipes have been replaced  :) I had the UJ replaced at the same time alongside impulse buy of a new battery  (:< >:).
Soo nice atm to go out and know she's gonna start  :D
Sump, oil and filter arriving next week, think I will paint the new sump before it's fitted.
All go, can't wait for new roof.
Title: Re: Meet Maureen she's a Silver 04
Post by: Garfy on February 26, 2019, 17:22
Yesterday the sump was replaced, I've been informed it was just in time as the metal was getting porous and the oil was starting to come through from the inside on the rusted area  :o
Oil changed with new titan fuchs and oil filter whilst at it.

Mechanic says he could see some slivers of metal in the old oil and advised to change the oil sooner next time, hope fully it's nothing too bad although I know it must be  :'( roughly 5000 miles since last oil change.

On the up side, he also said looking when the sump was off that it had been kept well in the past  :-*

All struts now painted, poly bushes bought and was booked in for swapping out, of course in the current climate and unsure of next cash injection had to cancel swap.

Don't feel good about that as the mechanic is self employed and could of done with the money as well.

I have managed to install some plasma dials and enjoyed sitting in the car in the dark looking at them.

Maybe speaker and tweeter upgrade next, they're sat in the shed.

Now have her turbo'd with a new (to m) engine  ;D

Taking it slow at the moment as I get to grips with things but oh yes, oh oh yes.  >:D

Some will say the new engine and turbo haven't happened without photographic evidence!

You want a screenshot of my bank balance 😫

Take it careful mate with all this rain. Very different beast with another 50 or so bhp.

Thanks Scotte,
As said, taking it easy, only using boost in a straight line at the moment.
Would really like to get the back end out at some point under controlled conditions, so I can work out some limits.

I was skint previously, now I'm destitute but happy, reading all your posts made me do it! 😬

Not really, been saving and came into a little more, this year was always about getting the car the way I want it.
Next year is to about being sensible 😥

Onto last (ISH) phase, I got some more power now to add a little more weight 🤔

Have my side scoops (actually had them three years).
WRX spoiler has arrived.
Front splitter and mid brake light cover has been sent.
Front splitter rods on order (from China 🤬).

All above to be sprayed in dark green to match the roof and fitted.

Dodo mat at home waiting to be installed.

Then I have what I've been aiming for (I hope)

😁
