Title: My Silver '06
Post by: delhusband on May 13, 2017, 11:42
First some History - My first romance, X373 OES - Bought -2003, Sold 2005 (biggest life regret - it was my only car, I couldn't afford a second motor, and I needed something more practical)

Next job scheduled for 29th May. Local garage doing MOT advisories. Fitting discs and pads (kindly supplied by seller), and looking at deteriorated bushes on front wishbones (been reading about polybushes with interest)

Thanks Shnazzle, Carolyn & Essex2Visuvesi. Coffebean stays!, Battleversions look delicious, but out of my league right now - need to work some overtime. Need to start saving some pennies, i'd love another mk3 track day

Had a really good drive today. car blitzed with insects. Been driving enthusiastically after sticking some redex in the tank - no known need, wee experiment/curious to see if it made any noticeable difference (not totally sure it did, maybe a teeny bit?). So, washed and polished, and gave the hood a proper clean with some turtle wax cleaner and conditioner i got from the last owner.

Created new profile on Torque! Bought the reader for checking a fault code on an older car i had -never used it since, and probably don't use/understand fraction of the functionality - but the live readputs are real pretty!
Also considering attempting an mr2roc theme! (Theres a guide to making theme packs)

Ok, interesting day out. Checked engine coolant levels whilst out today. Embarrased to say it was the first time I'd checked, ever.  s:oops:  s:oops:

(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170603_130129_zpsl0aahf4k.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170603_130129_zpsl0aahf4k.jpg.html)

Topped up to "full" level with this
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170603_160629_zpst8gvasvi.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170603_160629_zpst8gvasvi.jpg.html)

Spirited drive home, then stopped in at local shops and could smell burning. Parked up and some smoke coming from engine bay, panicked. Got out and saw some loose material sitting in nappy smoking away
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170603_155604_zpsuqg8istr.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170603_155604_zpsuqg8istr.jpg.html)

Waiting for everything to cool down a bit. Where does that matetial normally sit, is this exhaust heat sheilding? Is it normally in nappy or elsewhere?

Also, just want to ask about how my coolant level now (see below) - looks very high to total novice like me - any/all advice welcome

Ok, so an hour after engine off level just above full. Didn't know how much expansion to expect to see in coolant bottle when warm, and maybe filled when engine wasn't quite cool enough.

The coolant levels hard to read on these, I'd get the turkey baster out and suck some of the excess coolant out of the tank. From what I've read  the tank will expel any excess it self though if you leave it so don't worry to much.

One thing I've learned about this car is the coolant is absolutely bonkers.
I did exactly as above. Turkey baster, because whenever I checked, it was like yours, overfull.
But now, at times, it's just above min. Other times, it's max.

As long as it sits between the two, and I definitely haven't lost any, I'm happy.

Over the years - I now know these machines keep you on your toes - Coolant levels are so distracting!! Check the expansion tank before starting the engine. As long as the level is between Max and Min - No probs - Should it be under Min then fill to halfway and drive - If you overfill then your 2 blows out excess to atmosphere!!- Mind you there have been times when I've checked the level and found the level near Min and had no fluid to refill and driven to work and checked again - To find Tank just under Half full!

Time to check levels again. Just looking at inside of lid, Is there supposed to be some black insulation at the top left inside of the lid?

Looks like a bracket holding the exhaust tail section has rotted away, but doesn't seem to be much movement when i push on the tailpipe, so not sure it's a big deal, or that the bracket was supporting much

Was going to remove nappy today following smokey scare yesterday, but it rained and I don't have a garage. So, decided to remove malfunctioning head unit. Great vid by AyCarrumba on YouTube on how to remove the trim and head unit, link below
 m https://youtu.be/GAnN7CDIB7o (https://youtu.be/GAnN7CDIB7o) m

Got trim off and unit out

Trim back on until i get another head unit

Also bought some shiny stuff i don't need, from Halfords yesterday. Got a smartphone holder, usb charge socket and some bosch aeroblades (i needed those, wipers were done)
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170604_173106_zpsxt3kujyw.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170604_173106_zpsxt3kujyw.jpg.html)

Holder is one of the best I've bought- plenty of adjustment, clamps dont cover buttons, and easy lock/release mech. Only a tenner! I'll need this for 12th Aug run to Holy Isle, use my phone for sat nav.

OK, feeling adventurous this evening. Like I said before I'm new to maintenance, so if it sounds Mickey Mouse then apologies but bear with me, it's a journey - my journey (queue Disney music).
I've read about the potential benefits of cleaning the Mass Air Flow sensor. Reading through threads it looked like something I should be able to manage, if I was careful.  First venture into the Engine bay other than for fluid checks (see earlier in thread, my track record on that isn't great either   s:oops:  s:oops:  )

Found MAF, grabbed a crosshead screwdriver, removed screws and disconnected plug
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_182357_zpswxtstsko.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_182357_zpswxtstsko.jpg.html)
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_182909_zpsxmjcufd2.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_182909_zpsxmjcufd2.jpg.html)

Pulled MAF sensor from housing (carefully). Looking at the amber bulb on the MAF (the Idle Air Temperature sensor?) both front and rear, I got an idea of the kind of coating that can develop on these.  That said, the elements inside the unit didn't look too bad - they looked a little dull maybe, but not black like the IAT sensor
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_183322_zpsshzmd68a.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_183322_zpsshzmd68a.jpg.html)
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_183329_zpsd9na5czm.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_183329_zpsd9na5czm.jpg.html)
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_183358_zpsvxxv7gp9.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_183358_zpsvxxv7gp9.jpg.html)

I was in Halfords earlier looking for MAF cleaner - The products they had in store were Halfords Contact Cleaner (some members saying not to use), and this stuff.  This seemed to be more appropriate going by description on the can - the product usage label described spraying into air intake system without filter, with engine running. I never went through with this procedure, but I'll explain why later.
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_183411_zpsvbding9n.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_183411_zpsvbding9n.jpg.html)

Gave the MAF a good spray from about 30cm away, all over, inside and out.  I forgot to remove the rubber 'O' ring around the MAF   s:oops:  s:oops:  , and it got covered.  I rinsed it off. Initially it appeared misshapen, but after drying out it returned to normal shape.  I went up to B&Q to see if I could get a replacement, but they had none the right size - (I had some 32mm x 2.6mm in the shed, just a bit too big, think I need a 32mm x 2mm? It's on my shopping list, don't want to leave the existing one, maybe it'll perish quicker (I'm a worrier).  I let the MAF dry for a good 20-30 minutes.
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_184028_zpsbhfrltnt.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_184028_zpsbhfrltnt.jpg.html)

Feeling a bit bold, I decided to have a go at using the EGR cleaner in the way they described (plus, doing this would give me a chance to find out what an air filter actually looks like in real life - sad, I know, but extremely exciting for me).  Found the clips on the air box cover, and prised them off.  It looks like it would have been easier to access if I'd removed the cross members above, but not knowing whether or not they needed to be tightened to a specific torque setting/not knowing if not having it tightened correctly might be dangerous, I left it and fiddled about (like I said I fret).
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_183940_zpsurbqdw2j.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_183940_zpsurbqdw2j.jpg.html)

Also unclipped the tubing from the top of the coolant bottle away from the top of the filter box lid.

Took off the cover of the air filter box, and took out the filter. I was surprised at how much muck was in the base of the filter housing, and how much muck the filter absorbs!  Going to replace this with a K&N panel filter eventually. I've read about induction kits, and I'd like the extra noise it's said that they make, but I'll leave it for now - they look a bit awkward to fit - one step at a time (soon mate).  One thing I've read though about the likes of the K&N filters is that they're impregnated with oil which can (eventually) foul the MAF - I'd be interested in knowing how long it would take for any significant fouling to happen (do you need to clean MAF more regularly?).  The other thing I read about the likes of the K&N filter is that it's cleanable (unlike normal one use service item) - Question - if its impregnated with oil how do you clean it without removing the oil, which presumably serves some filtering purpose?
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_184422_zpsnjwgtdbe.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_184422_zpsnjwgtdbe.jpg.html)
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_184442_zpsfv0nk7du.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170612_184442_zpsfv0nk7du.jpg.html)

Anyway, after looking inside the bottom of the air filter box and seeing all the debris I gave it a clean to remove small leaves and dust inside.  At this point I was thinking about following the guidelines for the EGR cleaner, and reading the guidelines just raised more questions for me - I'm supposed to inject this whilst engine warm and running at 1,500rpm, without filter in, and there's a lot of dirt in there, will debris get sucked into engine? Do I need to have MAF reconnected? If I reconnect MAF and replace filter box, where am I supposed to inject this stuff?  Should I disconnect the engine intake pipe from the top of the Air Box and inject in there? I'll need someone with foot on throttle to keep revs around advised 1,500rpm and my wife doesn't drive, she'll freak if I ask her for help!

So..... I just left it for another day.  I'd love to know what other components are present in the intake that get cleaned with this stuff, and whether doing that is bad for engine? I'm guessing the stuff that's melted off the dirty components just gets burnt in the cylinders?

Next up, do an ECU reset.  I've read that quickest way is to disconnect battery (negative terminal).  Wasn't sure if there was a recommended amount of time to leave disconnected (to allow discharge?) - I gave it 3 minutes.  I'd searched earlier on forum to find out which fuse(s) I could pull instead of performing battery disconnection, sounded as though there may have been more than one fuse involved? had a look in the 3 relay boxes, found a couple labelled ECU(*), got confused and plumped for the battery using a 10mm socket to remove the clamp.

Job done.  Took car for a test drive along the local bypass (the houses along that route must be getting sick of me red lining in 2nd like a teenager, but it makes me feel insanely good. Honestly, not the earth shattering difference for me that I was hoping for, but did seem to pull a bit quicker at 3k-5k? (or maybe that's the redex effect   s:D :D s:D

Whole job took an hour (because I was bricking it a bit). No doubt this is 10 minute job for pro's. Fun though.

Phase 1 of my long term plan is to rejuvenate suspension, with as much of my own spannering as possible. Looking at the rear stabiliser bar, it doesn't look great.
So I bought myself a torque wrench today.  I won't be needing it for a while - I don't have jack(s) or stands yet! I'm just slowly (and financially discreetly from Mrs delhusband) building up an arsenal.

I found the packaging especially pleasing in that it resembled a light sabre - I'll mod it by fitting a red torch inside  s:D :D s:D

Have an annoying rattle in the dash, somewhere here
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_195418_zpsovbx521i.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_195418_zpsovbx521i.jpg.html)

I searched other threads, found one on a rattle behind the instrument cluster
http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=24478&hilit=dashboard+rattle

Thought I'd give it a go. Started by removing instrument cowl
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_195458_zpsr8pxjkz7.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_195458_zpsr8pxjkz7.jpg.html)

Removed the three screws shown
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_195538_zpslgldf34x.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_195538_zpslgldf34x.jpg.html)

Disconnected the three connectors behind the instrument cluster carefully, pushing down on the tabs whilst pulling on the connector
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_195922_zpsjhozvcxj.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_195922_zpsjhozvcxj.jpg.html)

Here's the dash with the instrument cluster removed.  Everything seemed pretty well secured, gentle pull on the wiring looms and the air boxes and couldn't find anything loose
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_200142_zpsfznycl47.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_200142_zpsfznycl47.jpg.html)

So no joy this time.  Found another thread though, which talks about removing side panels on dash, and specifically about the noise having ccome from near the vent.  That's where I think my noise is so I'll give this thread a go
http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=31369&hilit=dashboard+rattle

Next up, thought I'd have a look at the instrument facias. There's a grubby scratch or mark on the speedometer, just above the odometer, that's been bugging me. Gently set about removing the Perspex cover by pushing the tabs in front and rear and lifting off
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_200419_zpscva4rva7.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170613_200419_zpscva4rva7.jpg.html)

Think it was mild scratch, rubber didn't remove any of the marking.

Cam home and decided to have another go at that dash rattle, it was driving me mental on way back up.  Not 100% sure but I think I've found the source. The noise sounded like a connector knocking against the trim, somewhere around the drivers vent.  Previous attempt at removing instrument cowl I couldn't really see anything, so I tried a little lower down this time and found a loose plug knocking about near the ODB2 connector - can anyone tell me what this is? (inside red circle).(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170625_170901_zpsloj0jvap.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170625_170901_zpsloj0jvap.jpg.html)

Anyway, I've tie wrapped it up (matching red tie-wrap for red trim of course, I know it's unseen but I have OCD).  I'll see how things go over the next couple of hundred miles, but I'm sure this is it.

Could you just buy the bulbs now to insert in the above assemblies?

Thanks.

Good question, don't know, but if it's possible to buy bulb separate, you're welcome to some of these sockets! Does anyone know what the bulb number would be for this, if there is one?

First ever attempt at some basic servicing today.  Bought a spark plug removal toolset and another smaller torque wrench
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170723_154750_zpszwdmgq9p.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170723_154750_zpszwdmgq9p.jpg.html)

First off, fit replacement air filter (recently acquired Blitz LM panel filter bought from another user on here)
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170722_181453_zpsw7fbox1t.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170722_181453_zpsw7fbox1t.jpg.html)

Next, change spark plugs. Local Halfords didn't have NGK BKR5-E.-..'s, and I'll only have this weekend to do the job, so plumped for what they had - Bosch FR78X (saw these weren't favoured by a user on another thread here  s:) :) s:)

Ended up taking off the rear strut brace off to get better access to 2nd from left plug

Original Denso plugs didn't look to bad compared to other pictures I've seen on other threads here, but changed anyway to get some experience/practice
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170723_104040_zpsrjyqxioh.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170723_104040_zpsrjyqxioh.jpg.html)

Last up, oil & filter change. Had a bit of a 'mare with this - first off, removed mid trim section and drained sump - managed to shear two of the very rusty bolts that hold the trim on - 3 good rusty ones left, the rest was held up by tie wraps which snipped off easily (http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170723_133425_zpsbolimheu.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170723_133425_zpsbolimheu.jpg.html)

Filter wasn't for coming off by hand or chain removal tool. Got advice from in here - was told a screwdriver works well - sure enough   s:wink:  s:wink:  (http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170723_143428_zpssav3xytd.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170723_143428_zpssav3xytd.jpg.html)

New Halfords filter fitted. Filled up to 3L, lowered off stands and checked levels. Fired up and all running with no leaks!
(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170723_151750_zps2mzvtmyf.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170723_151750_zps2mzvtmyf.jpg.html)

Job (almost) done! I'll fit the trim on properly tomorrow, didn't have tie wraps today.

I lowered the car before checking, completely filled the filter before attaching, and then stuck in 2.8L and checked dip stick - it was about half way. so I topped up with another 300ml.  I was being cautious - didn't want to overfill - read somewhere that max fill was about 3.5-3.7L, is that about right?

Just followed a couple of youtube vids I watched, presumed they did it to get rid of trapped air - although I didn't grease the plug threads with any kind of anti-seize compound like the guys on the vids did - Deliberated for ages over that, saw NGK advice against it (know my plugs are bosch)
https://www.ngksparkplugs.com/about-ngk/spark-plug-101/5-things-you-should-know-about-spark-plugs
but can see that having a stuck plug and trying to forcibly remove might be bad for the threads in your engine   s:? :? s:?

Guys on vids were saying fill up filter before attaching, and smear the gasket with fresh oil - they never said why - I kind of assumed pre-fill was for preventing trapped air, and smearing gasket was maybe for better seal / make removal easier later? Don't know.

I'd agree about the seal. All the videos I watched said that, but I've never seen it suggest filling the filter either.

I've heard of many filling the filter before refitting. I really don't see what difference it's going to make either way apart from emptying all over the driveway if it was dropped while refitting. Granted I've only ever done one filter change  s:oops:  s:oops: . I didn't prefill when I changed mine

Definitely smearing the seal with oil helps it to seal

I've heard that checking precats is maybe a good idea (tongue firmly in cheek).  Bit late to the party, but thought I'd give it a go.  Had a look at the excellent info on pre-cats in the beginners section.
So set about finding and trying to remove the O2 sensors.
Discovered there's such a thing as an O2 sensor removal tool (22mm tallish socket with a slot cut out the side for those like me who don't / didn't know). Typical impatient me, went to Halfords and forked out what seemed like a bit too much for what you get.  Need to learn patience and browse more, I'll probably save money.  Still, the weapons arsenal is growing...

Bit of a co-incidence, someone else talking about cheap USB borescope cameras on another thread today - I bought one ages ago off the 'bay before I bought my current '2, to try and inspect subframes prior to purchase - hilariously the one time I took it my laptop gave up the ghost and ended up unable to use it    s:oops:  s:oops:  . But, thought it might be useful today for inspecting the precats.

Removed the O2 sensors - must vaccumm the car sometime soon - filthy  s:( :( s:(

Wasn't expecting what I saw, which was (I think) nothing at all there. I'm really hoping you can all confirm that this means that someone has already taken the trouble to remove them already and I should be over the moon at not having to worry about this anymore, or fork out any money.  Or, tell me that I'm a tw@t and am looking in entirely the wrong place, and should read the precats guide again (but don't be too hard on me because the images aren't visible on the precats thread anymore  s:) :) s:)  )
The images below are taken from my phone - I dropped the borescope camera as far into both holes as I could, but saw a lot of blackness on my laptop screen, .

Long shot here - has anyone on the forum ever owned GV06 MFY before me, that could maybe confirm that the precats have been removed? I'm still in touch with the dude I bought the car off, I'll give him a shout - they were a family of petrol heads so it's not impossible that they removed them...

That looks pretty pre-catless.
As a helper, you might want to start pricing up O2 sensors. They don't really like being played with  s:( :( s:(
Mine broke just after I changed the exhaust, however, they've since survived a cat and manifold change as I took them out before I did anything and wrapped them up carefully.

I think they might be made of chocolate.

If the pre-cats are still in you should what looks like a honey comb pattern. Do a google search for MR2 Roadster pre-cats this will give you images of what your looking for within the manifold.

Lacquer should be ideal as long as you've the time and patience to spray it and wait for it to dry properly. I once spent a good while on some Ford Fiesta lights finishing them with clear lacquer and they looked factory.
I have a rain-x kit which came with some spray and wipe type stuff, which having used it on my Celica lights doesn't do a whole lot!

There's a thread dedicated to removing the bumper -
http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=61427
I've added it to it today, unfortunately the photos weren't available thanks to Photobucket - I've added some new ones. Basically, there's 5 bolts under the "chin", 4 on top in front of the radiator, 2 either side underneath near the fogs/wheel arch, and then another 2 bolts hiding behind the wheel arch trim where the side panels and the bumper meet. once these are off, you need to pull gently upwards on the bumper along the line where the panels meet to release the bumper from a catch.  I'd removed the frunk cover, but I think maybe I didn't need to in the end (although discovered that you'd need to lift the front of the frunk trim off to get to two of the headlamps bolts to remove them by the look of it)

(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170807_204012_zps25cmslet.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170807_204012_zps25cmslet.jpg.html)

I'm starting to build a set of sheared bolts and broken clips- better see if I can find some and order a batch of trim screws/clips, frunk clips etc.

(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170807_215554_zpswqbcdqws.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170807_215554_zpswqbcdqws.jpg.html)

Good opportunity to inspect the steering wheel knuckle joint, I've seen this mentioned a few times.  Doesn't look great. My wallet's going to take some hit. Going to have to ask for opinions on prioritising spend.  Suspension looks terrible, this looks terrible. Think I'm going to go off and sob a little, regain my composure and start budgeting. I love my 2, but as I've seen on here maybe I should've spent less and bought something slightly older, and had more to spend on putting the same issues right.

(http://i1044.photobucket.com/albums/b442/delhusband/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170807_194101_zpsja6prbfe.jpg) (http://s1044.photobucket.com/user/delhusband/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20170807_194101_zpsja6prbfe.jpg.html)

I would wire brush the UJ, grease it up and see how you get on. They never look great as they are tucked away but if you arent getting steering problems then probably not an urgent one. It wont look half so bad with grease on.

The suspension refresh will make a big difference though if it has never been done.

To be fair, I'm not noticing anything. Maybe feels a little less assisted than I remember, but nothing severe or scary like a loss of steering. And it's hard to tell without a benchmark, had my last 2  over 14 years ago. But will definitely do as advised thanks.

On the plus side, the bumper came off in 10 mins this evening  s:) :) s:)  downside was still still unable to remove fogs. They're well rusted in place, and it was rain that stopped play tonight. Maybe leave it for now.

After replacing the coolant gauge bulb, it became the brightest bulb in the dash.  So ended up buying another 9 bulbs to replace the rest

After.  the changing light levels outside, and crappy smartphone camera, make it look like I'm exaggerating the effect, but it's actually really noticeable, big improvement (and no, I wasn't playing with the dimmer between shots!).

Is that 99132-YZZBJ for the part number?
How many bulbs do you get in that box?
And.. How much?
Think I'll replace my LEDs for some fresh oem bulbs

Yep, that's the right part number  s:) :) s:)  45p per bulb - that's twice now I've ordered a random amount - 3 the first time, 9 this time - I've just chucked the packaging out but I'm pretty sure it was a cardboard strip of 10. Cheapest mod I've made yet. Difference was night and day (boom boom!  s:D :D s:D  )

Stupid question but did you just walk into a dealership and buy them? The nearest Toyota main dealer to me is around 25 miles away!

I just phoned dealer and asked them if they could post them out. Got to tell you, service at my main stealership is brilliant (Arnold Clark in Paisley), they've been giving me awesome discount on bulk orders for suspension parts

Aaah, I might try that then, I put the part number in Google last night and all the results were in Russian or Greek or some form of symbols rather than letters apart from the word Toyota!

Attempt number 3 at replacing the front fog bulbs and drying out/sealing the units. Got the front bumper fully removed for the first time. Previously it had been hanging from the bottom (I'd been removing the wrong bottom bolts - 5 bolts that hold the rubber chin on, instead of the 3 bolts behind them which go into the, erm, chassis?).
I managed to shear the head off 2 of the 3 underside bolts.  That's 1 of the 4 top bolts, 2 of the 3 bottom bolts, and 1 of the 5 rubber chin screw heads sheared. I probably should have sprayed with more WD40 and waited a little longer before attempting. Anyway, I'll order up some spare bolts and set about using my dremmel and tap/die set next time and practice removing the stuck bolts.  I reckon drilling/tapping might be an invaluable skill to learn judging by the state of the car underneath
Practicing rubbing down/treating/priming and re-painting of rusty surfaces will be next skill to learn after that.

Once the bumper was off and the cable clips were removed from the bulbs, I had to pry at a some plastic tabs to release the foglights from their housings

There is a black plastic shroud/surround for an adjustment screw, that I had to pry inwards and push through the hole
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4354/36580952771_4ee6a7db62_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XJwWNg)

There was a large tab on one side of the lamp that had to be prised out a bit - once that was loose, the lamp kind of slides and pushes out of the hole at the other side
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4423/36580967441_df4a5654d5_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XJx2ac)

Once released, I got a good look at the lamp housings which looked very badly corroded.  I wasn't able to unscrew the bulbs to release them, and the 3 x retaining screws on the plastic collar, although looking good on the head, were completely seized within the thread and the driver was just chewing at the slotted head.  Don't like waste, but I'm thinking these are a lost cause.

Nope. 10 x 16mm A2 stainless for 50p, 10 washers for £1.50. Unless you want penny washers then you're talking big money!
If you're feeling really saucy you can get 100 screws for £2.50...

Nah mate, you're not an idiot, I tried to insert it into the relevant section of your initial post and failed dismally so I'm as bad!
All the ones that screw into the frame/chassis are 6s, assuming they're original and not tapped out to 8s like some of mine [emoji23]. The machine screws that go into the plastic panel clips are a bit harder to get hold of, I usually fill my socket set with them when I get the chance at the scrappers!
Almost filled it with a pair of seats out of a Celica on Sunday but the driver's was a bit too far gone.

It's the 3 plastic pegs holding the rear bumper up to the underside of the slam panel that really annoy me, next time it's off I'll be fettling an alternative but I'm not sure I can get my rivnut fitting tool up in their.

Don't suppose you've found a for replacement for the trim screws - 10mm hex head, large washer, 6mm Ø, 16mm length, 3mm pitch - seen any equivalents for these?

Nope, those were the ones I meant when I said I stripped the scrapper cars. I've got a few spares from that but no new ones.
I've got some steel "chimney clips" I think they're called that take an m6 screw but they're very tight, haven't tried them for bumpers etc yet but used them to fasten the rear spats on.

Much searching later - I think the Toyota part number might be 90159-60603 - looks like the job
I was on the phone half an hour today ordering Toyota parts from TCB to add to the ones that arrived yesterday, I'm all part numbered out! No more Toyota parts buying for me for the foreseeable future!

Brilliant fun this evening. Ground and drilled out a stuck bolt and tapped a new thread!
I have evolved from Squirtle to Wartortle (If you don't know what I'm on about, just ignore me - I'm deliriously happy - think I've just graduated from tinkerer to entry level fixer).

Just discovered a new Screwfix opened recently just round the corner form where I work. Got 1 x 10 pack of A2 6 x 16 SS bolts, & 10 pack of penny washers - just over £4. Cheers Midlife  s:) :) s:)
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4439/35954200723_813425bdf4.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/WM9Fft)

Assembled the tools. Drill, assortment of metal bits (sizes "erm.." to "rusty"), hammer and punch. Forgot to include the Rotary tool in the pic  s:) :) s:)

Here's one of the offending stuck bolts on the top section where the front bumper mounts
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4359/36623411761_cf8ba1a515.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XNhynP)

Used grinding head on rotary tool to grind off the top of the screw. I tried using the hammer and punch to make a guide hole for the drill, but the metal work at that location is quite rusty, and is naturally thin - I managed to deform the metalwork a little, so I reverted to just drilling a small guide hole from scratch at low speed. Started a hole all the way through with smallest bit, and when that was done went to the next size up - repeated until I arrived at the right size for tapping a new M6 thread into.

Used the M6 tap from the new kit I got the other week (Might not have use the best/appropriate handle, but went easy - half turn, then back a turn, then repeat until all the way through.  Then wound in and out fully once for good measure when done. Finished bolt 1!

I'll finish that bolt and the third one next time I get a dry night. Really wish I had a Garage or a lockup - was saying to Mulaz on the Holy Island run, I'm thinking about a gazebo.

You could try these also once you've ground the head off, might save you the hassle of drilling the thread out, then just a quick clean with the 6mm tap.

No guarantee they'll work mind but for a few quid and a few minutes trying. I'd also ask Father Christmas for a twin set of battery drill/driver and impact driver, much more user friendly when you're lying underneath the car!
I've got a compressor but forget to use the tools, just reach for the Makitas.

Changed out PCV for new one I bought from TCB - one less thing to worry about. This was really simples!
The old one seemed OK when I blew through it each side (easy on Cylinder head side, resistance on intake manifold side).
Both of them rattled when I shook them - I might sound silly, but the old PCV seemed a bit more "boingy" inside when I shook it.
I'm starting a list of servicing things I've done

noticed after months of ownership that my hood had "Ears"
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=63563 (http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=63563)

Found out that there's a strap that runs inside the hood, and lots of nice peeps on here told me how to fix  s:) :) s:)  see link above for videos and a really good explanation.
Obtained a new strap (thanks D. Sloane  s:D :D s:D  )

Bit dark, nights drawing in and all that. Torch required. Used a hefty tome to prop the hood up at just the right angle to fit the strap. I recommend this book. A fascinating insight into how things turned bad quick through the ages, and who was to blame.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4399/37230099815_c8911549ba_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YHTZAF)

I attached the strap to my loft pole with some parcel tape, and used this to feed the strap through the "tunnel" within the "Tunnel" in the hood, taking care to make sure the pop studs were the right way up.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4415/37057990962_6f88037ae6_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/YsFTCE)

Wrapped around the frame, and then coupled the straps to the hood strap fixings using the pop studs
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4419/36832022450_14981dd77b_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Y7HK4Q)

Looking a lot better at the back, ears now gone (if you can even make that out - it's pitch black here - even the dog walkers are passing me staring at me like I'm a loony)
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4352/36415655013_0a34afa721_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/XtVKwV)

Only slight unexpected consequence is that there's a section of hood above the passenger side that now sags - pretty sure it wasn't like that before - maybe just need to tighten the passenger latch a little

Good to see - Make sure you stitch the strap in and around the studs - all the pressure/stress is on the studs and without stitching they will pop - Be careful when adjusting the latches - if you overdo it the hood will not fit correctly!!  s:roll:  s:roll:

You might want to get some lubricant up inside the void in the top half of the knuckle too, it looks a bit dry up there. A spray of your chosen protection with a few turns lock to lock maybe?

I think they all look pretty bad the first time you grease them as they are usually neglected under the plastic.

They rust straight away so as long as they feel ok and pass the mot etc then thats the main thing.

All that lovely grease should hold back the rust now.

You know, if you've put your 2 away for winter, I'm sure it'll only take a few minutes to get the cover or hard top off again - never too late   s:wink:  s:wink:
Weather's been nice this weekend, shame not to take advantage of it......

Thanks Jane  s:) :) s:)   Pretty lucky here, you can see Arran. Cumbrae and over to Kintyre Peninsula.  There's some spoilers just out of shot though  s:( :( s:(   - At the foot of the hill, and behind a mound, are the two main buildings of Hunterston Nuclear power station, and then there's the Hunterston Terminal with 2 large cranes and the a large open coal store at Fairlie.

They where even more majestic before the storm took most of the trees away. It's getting back to its glory very slowly.

Been rather unsuccessful at trying to replace my chain tensioner.
Background - Last club meet, there was talk about chain tensioners, and when and why they might need replacing. There was no rattling noise from my chain, but when we looked at the tensioner it looked like there was maybe a little bit of oil seeping out of at the left.  Thoughts were I maybe needed to replace the O ring, which Carolyn kindly sent on. But when TCB were advertising tensioners, it didn't look expensive, and after reading a few threads / watching a couple of videos I thought I'd get one for preventative maintenance, and have a go at replacing it myself.

Here's how it looked before I started - very rusty
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4546/38829788311_b13fcbdbc6_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22afPfP)

I bought a new tensioner from TCB, arrived really quickly  s:) :) s:)  . Thoroughly sprayed the 10mm retaining nuts with plenty of WD40 release agent, and let it soak overnight.
I found access to the nuts really really tricky - tricky to get tool in, not much room to swing the tool, and really difficult to see what I was doing.
Attempt 1 - Sockets weren't tall enough to get over the bolt posts to get to the nuts. Went to Halfords, and got some tall sockets.
Attempt 2 - Top nut came loose, but the bottom nut was rusted firmly in place.  Sprayed loads more release agent, more soaking, still no joy, and had now rounded the bottom 10mm nut

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4538/27053442919_71eaf9b335_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HdBY42)

At this point, thinking I need a set of locking pliers, and 2 x new 10mm nut for when the tensioner goes back in
Ordered nuts from Toyota, go to collect, and wrong part comes. Damn! so, sat with parts guy, go the right part, and also noted that the nuts go over a double threaded bolt, so ordered up those also - cost, £5 for nuts and bolts.

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4571/37901561205_0f64e2e8a6_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZKepFc)

Attempt 3 - ready for action...

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4574/23923112667_249a319e3c_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Cs1cVM)

Couldn't get the locking pliers over the nut - too big, slipping off, not enough space to swing it. Abandoned.
Time for new ideas.  I'd seen that notching a nut with a chisel, and then getting the nut to rotate angling the chisel into the notch and hammering, might be an option.  I wasn't very good at this...I got the notch made, but the nut turned out to be a bit like Thatcher - "the lady's not for turning"

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4538/37901576745_bcff32b9b0_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/ZKeui8)

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4583/24956991578_02155a9391_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/E2n77f)

Tried then drilling with my hand drill, and then grinding through the nut with my rotary tool.  All I managed to accomplish here was to expose some nice fresh shiny metal, and grind down the threads on the double threaded bolt post (glad now I bought the new bolt posts)
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4561/27053408229_9b1893c108_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HdBMJV)

I notice that the double threaded bolt post has a star shaped male end, and am now wondering if there's a female socket to fit over the end of it you'd be able to try rotating the bolt post rather than the nut.  Regardless, it's a tool a don't have.

I've used up half my day off, not enough daylight hours left for anything productive, and rain starting.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4522/38829724471_09fe2fd3b0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22afuh8)

So, tail between my legs I go round to Kevin our local mechanic and show him some sorry looking photos (as I am showing you now) and humbly request his assistance.  Top chap, came round today a van and another of his guys to tow Skaffen away.

There is indeed a socket to drive the studs in/take out but to be honest I think it would've just chewed it even more if you couldn't shift it with the rest of the kit you've been using.

thanks for sharing, that sort of information makes me feel better!  I often start a "it cant be that difficult, just two nuts" job and end up in a similar pickle.  As you say, though, never let it put you off.  Mine isn't a daily drive so it often just waits until I recover my composure.

To be fair my use of said tools was akin to a toddler using a fork & knife for first time   s:lol:  s:lol:
It's an awkward bit to get to (in my opinion anyway). That socket might have clinched it, because its the tip of the bolt, which is easier to get at, but I might have ended up just shearing off the end given the rust.

Thanks, glad i'm not alone   s:) :) s:)   yeah. The youtube vids don't always show you how do to things when the bits are caked and welded in place with rust. I've said it before and i'll say it again, you have to hand it to the pro's - try giving a fixed price quote for a small job when you have to contend with all that comes with an aging car. Can't be easy.

Chisel looks a bit like this...
ia1 IMG_0058.JPG ia1 [/attachment:yhivsr31]
Skaffen Amtiskaw - Character from the book "Use of Weapons" by Iain M. Banks
ia0 untitled.png ia0 [/attachment:yhivsr31]
It's a great book. Sci-Fi, not everyone's bag, but I love it. The character is a Silver, floating, suitcase sized "drone" with extreme agility, razor sharp wit, a dark sense of humour, but murderous tendencies - a bit like my two on a greasy road, and the way it hacked my hands to bits with it's rusty parts.

I'd never have attempted replacing the subframe myself, that would have been far too ambitious for me.  I was originally wanting to have a go at least at attempting to build the shock/springs up - but when I priced up all new accessories (insulators/Seats/Supports etc), I got a bit of a shock (pardon the pun!) - in the back of my mind then was the fact that I might have had the car on stands for a while given the weather and available light, and there would have been the worry of what to do if I couldn't get the car to a garage for help if I was struggling.  Also didn't really want to miss out on using the car too much.  So, I prepared myself mentally for some extra cost (and prepared some evasive answers in case I start getting quizzed on my credit card balance) and took it to the garage.

First thing to come out was the subframe.  One of the arms wouldn't separate (bit of confusion here - was sure he said the #1 lower N/S arm on the phone, but looks like the #2 O/S has been replaced), so one arm stayed with the old subframe and a new one was ordered from Toyota at a fair bit of cost (was hoping this didn't happen).  The old subframe had started to rot (apologies for the poor quality pic)

Have now taken the car out for a quick first drive. As I'd really hoped all along, there is now a considerable difference in the ride quality (at low speed anyway) - the car would previously jar/crash on every pothole or imperfection in the road, with some noise and discomfort in the cabin. It now feels far more supple/compliant and composed.  I haven't had a chance to feel it at higher speed yet - I'll take the advice given and wait to get the geometry checked before having some some proper fun.  I think the stance of the car looks better too now.  I could do with a new set of fronts, there's a bit more wear on the inside, which is now near limit.

Next thing is to call the insurer about the lowering springs, then get it booked in for an alignment - really looking forward to putting through its paces properly now. Happy as the proverbial pig

Offside rear is currently around 3.5-4 degrees negative from fitting the Meisters and lowering it.
Drives straight enough and no ill effects but ideally needs fettling.
Due to be fitting a new clutch soon though so I'll do it after that.

I'm really not convinced that's normal.
That's a LOT of negative camber.
When I put my BCs on I think it was out by about half a degree.

Oh it's definitely not normal but neither can we see anything "wrong" with anything else, so to speak.
I've hardly driven it since I fitted them (apart from a few hundred miles round Wales) and once the clutch is sorted the suspension is next on the list. (Sorry Del for spamming your thread).

Collected Car post Underbody Treatment today. Really pleased with the service there, nice bunch. Plus they've had experience working on other members cars which is reassuring. This is the kind of investment that I'm not going to see the results of daily, but hoping it pays off in terms of longevity of the car.

After collecting the car today from a successful MOT ( :) ), decided to have a crack at polishing the headlights.
There's some mildew behind the rims of the lenses, so I decided that rather than polish them in place I'd take them out and see if I could clean the sides as well.  This was a bigger job than expected.  Started by getting bumper off again, which came off fine.
The top screws for the lights came out OK, but the side screws behind the bumper both sheared when I turned them.

Here's them out. You can see the swirling, and a little bit of discolouration

There was a fair bit of overspray of Dinitrol from the recent underbody treatment, and some mildew also.

Tomorrow I'll start polishing the surface of the lenses with my Autoglym kit. Bought some clear lacquer too for after the polishing.

Had a bit of a disaster polishing the first lens today. Kit advises on using a drill with a decent speed.  That meant breaking out my electric drill which is quite a heavy beast. Because the lenses were out of the car I was using my legs to brace the lens whilst using the drill. Final part of the perfect storm was some tiny flecks of dinitrol I hadn't cleaned properly off the sides of the lens.  Net result of this little perfect storm was that the sanding pad on the drill picked up a bit of the dinitrol, which then preceded to burn rapidly on the sanding disc, which then caught and skidded on the lens, and created some deep marking on the surface, which despite best attempts wouldn't come out, even with several subsequent passes of the 800 grit disc.

Here's how the lens looked before - there's some pitting etc. visible;

I've treated it with some Halfords Universal Clear Lacquer. Not really sure if it's appropriate for polycarbonate lenses or not, but trying to give it some UV protection.

If it weren't for bad luck you wouldn't have any! You could try nail varnish and some well soaked 1200 grit to try and get a gloss on it again but you're probably stuck with the opaque side of things.

The end result looks ok to me in the picture at least!

Did you polish them up and then lacquer them? Thats what I did with mine with some UV resistant lacquer but that started to peel off very quickly and there are only a few bits left on the edges of mine that have resisted me polishing them to get it all off due to sods law.

I think the correct way to do it is to go through the levels of wet and dry to end up with a fine grade and then spraying the lacquer onto the now opaque and sanded lights (ie no polishing) and that should make them clear again.

I have not been brave enough to try that though so let me know how you get on!

Gutted. Went over it 3 times with 800, then 2 times 1500, then 2000 and 3000. 800 didnt shift it, in too deep. Also noticing more fine bubbling/ tiny hairline cracks than before. Looks worse than before I started. If i do it again, it'll all be by hand next time

What a day. Tried replacing bulbs whilst front lights were off the car. Discovered I'd bought wrong bulbs (didn't check manual, went with Halfords listings). Put lights back into car, put bumper back on and discovered I'd left the rubber cap off the back of the light unit that seals the bulb in.  I'm going back to bed and pretend today never happened. :-[

Funny you should say that, I had one of my wheels off today and stood it up at the side of the car so I didn't have to keep stepping over it. Then kicked it over into the rear quarter panel while lying underneath the car, made a lovely thud!

I think I got away with it, it hit right in the middle so just flexed with it I think rather than dented. I was more annoyed about killing the nut and bolt that goes through the control arm! I've bodged it for now but don't want to drive it far until I get some proper replacements.

Had a go at removing the dent in my OSR panel, below the vent.

It's been bugging me for a while.  Don't see it as much up close, but from a distance it looks quite big.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/899/40734703295_dea0d87e5e_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/254A17B)

Googled "Side vent removal MR2 Roadster" and found this;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WajzOcBS8ZA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WajzOcBS8ZA)

Removed the side vent along the front edge using a narrow profile bike spanner wrapped in sellotape, to protect the paintwork. Flat tip screwdriver wrapped in tape would have done it too, but proper trim tools would have been better. There's 3 pop studs along the front edge. The pop studs have a square shaped profile at the back, which slide into recesses on the back of the vent. When prising the vent off, the vent came off without the studs, which were left in the bodywork.
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/912/41586733752_9e463d5df1_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/26mST5U)

To put the vent back on, I removed the studs from the bodywork, slid them back into the recesses on the back of the vent. Then, I hinged the back and upper side of the vent back into the bodywork, before pushing the front of the vent (and the studs) back into the bodywork.

(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/845/40734710345_e26d90dacd_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/254A3da)
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/800/26758204597_433d2c1e52_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/GLwMZ8)
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/793/40734709395_37bce40d3f_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/254A2VM)

Looks a little better for now @Mandsevo (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=24264). When the vent was off, I tapped the inside of the body panel at the dent/crease gently with a hammer.  It popped back out, but because of the crease in the bodywork the dent has a tendency to pop back in again.  Tapped it a few more times, to see if I could get it to stay out more permanently, and it's out for now, but I'll leave it to the pro's at dingday - don't want to go from concave to convex.

I had an amateur have a go at a dent in my silver.
Looked pretty good to my eyes for no outlay.
When i went to ding day I got a telling off.
He reckoned it took 3 times as long to sort than if it hadn't been messed with.
Just something to think about for the future maybe.

Tried it by hand first, popped out OK, but crumpled back in. After first couple of knocks with hammer it wasn't any better - but yeah, didn't enjoy using the hammer - got scared and left it :-[

I just noticed the story about the light cleanup.  Even with the bit of bad luck, the lights look so much better.  It's great when you can get a nice shine on them and remove the dullnes of the weathered lenses. It makes such a difference to the look of the car.

You've probably figured out a system for removing the dinitrol overspray but, just in case, I find that white spirit is very effective.

We discussed it at length yesterday sat outside the pub, @delhusband  is going to buy a cat and get it to lick all the spare Dinitrol off.

Did a mini service this evening, - oil & oil filter, new standard paper Air filter, and new Bosch FR78X's spark plugs. Just went for Bosch again- can never get Denso or NGK in Halfords.
My coolant has done a disappearing act - bottle was completely empty - vented the bottle, but was still below the "Low", so topped up to full - bet I see a tonne coming back tomorrow.

May have a problem - I've overfilled the oil ever so slightly - There was ~225ml left from a 4 litre bottle, which means I've gone over about ~75ml-90ml.  I reckon I've probably spilled 10-20ml over the engine bay and onto the drive - The letter "F" on the dip stick is covered (just), but there's nothing on the cable.  This could either sound ridiculous or dangerous, I just don't know - looking for advice on whether or not I should consider removing some oil - and if so, is it possible to extract from the top cap, or is it a case of opening the sump plug again?

I'd try and get a little out with one of these through the dipstick hole.

Fitted the new headlight I got at DD (Cheers Tricky :) ) Gave it a quick rub down with T-cut and it looks brand new, fantastic! Old scratched unit out from my epic fail of an attempt at polishing.

Nice work!

The photo with the headlamps has given me a crazy idea that (based on your posts) might be just up your street.  The old one is sort of in the middle of the car, so how about working out a way of fitting it like the old third spotlights on 1960s rally cars!!!!

One for the winter maintenance perhaps - or one to consign to the bin of another mad owner's mind....

Always great to hear what you are up to.

Hi Bossworld. i left the nearside light alone after making a hash of the offside. I was using the Autoglym kit which comes with a drill attachment and various grade discs, fr800, 1200, 1500 and 2000. It recommended using a fast drill speed, but this ended up burning the compound onto the sanding disc which caused it to skip on the surface (although i think it was also probably some flecks of dinitrol overspray from a recent underbody treatment which caught on the sanding pad as well. I tried to correct it by hand, which helped but then hairline fractures began to appear in the polycarbonate. So it was worse in the end. What i would do in hindsight now is start with tcut first if it is just mild yellowing, as was the case. This is what i used on the new lamp, as the surface was good and still transparent, just slightly discoloured.

To second Del's suggestion there's also the meguiars kit that comes with a couple of foam pads for really bad hazing and a wool type mop attachment for your drill.
Just lift the bonnet out of the way and mask off the wings before you start.

I previously did mine with Autosol and a cheap foam pad set that went into the drill, from eBay. That seemed to do the trick quite nicely but I saw a Holts kit on Carparts4less for about £13 so thought I'd try it.

Had some condensation build up in the passenger side so decided to remove both from the car to give me more space to work with on the floor.

As per del's issue, I found the cutting compound was causing it to skip about.

I then redid it all by hand, wet sanding just with plenty of water from 800 through to 3500. This was much better but once the compound was applied and cleaned off, they were clouding again.

Did it one more time, cleaned with 3m glass cleaner and applied the sealer spray straight away which left them clear, but I wouldn't say crystal clear and IMO they're probably worse than before I started lol

Decided to put my cone filter back in and try and locate it a bit better this time - I'd taken it off the car a couple of weeks back - the car was struggling to start one morning - got a bit superstitious about it all - the cone was the only recent change - it had been raining heavy the night before - who knows, all a bit weird, but panel filter went back in and all was well.

Popped off to Halfords today to get a 70-90mm clamp to fix the filter properly to the cut-out air box section, and also bought a K&N Filter cleaning set
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1808/29241972688_f04e935b1f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Ly1KGU)

Cleaning was a case of spraying inside and out, leave to soak 10 minutes, rinse under gentle running cold tap and leave to dry. Then sprayed the oil on;
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/917/29241971468_05d6d43bf3_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Ly1KkS)

Re-assembled Cone and modified/cut out box section
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1803/29241970368_d2febcf580_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Ly1K1U)

Removed stock air box (2 stiff bolts) and air feed pipe
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1781/29241969108_efc69bed37_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Ly1JDb)

Tried to locate cone into heat shielded section, piping isn't long enough, but it's a bit better than last time I fitted it
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/833/29241968598_390c3240ef_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Ly1Juo)

Now that stock air box is out there's nothing supporting the coolant pipes - should I be securing them with cable ties/cable tie bases to crossmembers/plates?

Right, wish me luck, I've decided to have a go at wrapping an exhaust manifold. As always, youtube video by a wrap manufacturer made it look like a cinch.
(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1958/29978734667_172dbaa30d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/MF7RnD)
Mind, I did find one vid where a reasonably competent looking chap had several attempts.  That's how it's going for me. Well, more attempts than that.

The wrap fibres get everywhere - my jumper is glittering like a cheap Pound Shop Christmas card.

I've finished one section. Think I'll take this slow, and finish it over a few nights and take my time.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1977/43103385430_34e1dcf009_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/28EU7ML)

Any tips on how to remove the existing manifold to head gasket are welcome - Stanley?

That pink gunk is a worry, should only be a metal gasket on that face, when you get it clean sit a straight edge across it in a variety of places and make sure it's not warped.
Why not burn it off? Should make for good photos at least!

That doesn't sound like rhyming slang for Pinotage if that's what you mean. @Ardent (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=20018) has been clueing me up on rhyming slang for currency, but "Cath Kidston" didn't feature on the sheet. Explain please!  :-)

That pink gunk is a worry, should only be a metal gasket on that face, when you get it clean sit a straight edge across it in a variety of places and make sure it's not warped.
Gasket and gunk off - what's best here - clean face with soft wire brush?

Try a bit of acetone or similar to remove the residue then maybe a fine wet and dry, then some compound like G3 followed by a good polish...

Del

Maybe start with the wire brush for any rough.
But looking for a smooth flat surface both manifold and head. I recall Steve flating things down with some wet n dry round a sanding block or simlar.
Not on the 2, but the principle holds.

Going to regret this at some point.
But, "acetone" or nail varnish remover. I have found, oddly enough, the "acetone free" to me more effective generally than the full fat  acetone.

So we have moved on from Kaths Hand bags to nail varnish remover.
No wonder people think of us as hairdressers.

Plumber' s have a similar rarity value to that of our 2's, especially when you want one in a hurry ;)

Been a while since I posted here. Gave up on the manifold for now. New job in January meant everything on hold for a while. Had the car out on the Highland drive recently which was amazing, and looking forward to Ding Day.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/33942616028_43e41c1cc1_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/THoMcJ)

But starting to get bits together for my next learning job, fitting new discs and pads. Had a bit of binding on the OSR during the Highland drive, and there's a lot of corrosion around the callipers, may be bigger job than I was hoping
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/40853459553_98dc68a370_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/25f5Edi)

One of the pads I got was different brand from ordered, thinking, should I send it back and get another Pagid, or are these identical pattern parts?

Send it / them back.
No ifs or buts.
Not fit for purpose.
Likely dangerous.
Liken it to a cross ply and a radial ply tyre on the same axle.
Things should and must be done in pairs if you value your car and yourself.
That's my opinion anyway.
PS l'd go so far as to say they should be the same batch number across each axle.

Cheers, yeah not too impressed by what showed up. This was from Carparts4less, on offer. Can see why now. Almost all boxes opened/seals broken, and an one part from different manufacturer. Stock clearance, more like cleaning out the tat.

Ah. Oops! Well, there was deffo 2xdiscs in each of the disc boxes because it says "x2" on the side, and the seal was broken so i looked. But the pad boxes don't explicitly say "x2", and I'll be honest I wasn't sure when ordering so I played it safe and doubled up. If this is how well I do with ordering them I can just imagine how the job will pan out 😂

Wow, where does the time go, that day 2 years ago was brilliant. How times change. Been parked up for a few months now. Sciatica / back pain is a bitch (in fairness might well have been excessive and enthusiastic use of said car that's caused it). I need to replace an O2 sensor too, it's been sitting on my dining room table for a while.  Resolved to get repair done and get out in it next weekend, with a dose of Naproxen...
Quote from: delhusband on November  5, 2017, 11:28You know, if you've put your 2 away for winter, I'm sure it'll only take a few minutes to get the cover or hard top off again - never too late  s:wink:  s:wink:
Weather's been nice this weekend, shame not to take advantage of it......

Pain is unfun guys. You have nmy sympathy and empathy. I enjoy life on painkillers, an indominable positive attitude, a strong sense of obligation to enjoy the daily privilege and not least the incredibly motivating power of loving company.

Thanks for sharing those wonderful views. I can almost smell the autumn air. Aye, the associations of smells.
A great love gave me a small bottle of Petrichor ´perfume´; a loving gift of bottled memmories made in the Uttar Pradesh village of Kannauj. I open it on very rare occasions and a whiff is like Scotty beams me up.

Had a quick go at replacing post cat sensor, read the How To by @Rockingdad  here:

How to change post-cat O2 sensor (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?topic=57205.0)

Sensor seized. I'd have taken the car out for a quick blast to get it all heated up, but car's locked up in back garden and it was just before dinner time, so I'll hit it with WD40 later and try again another time.

How to change post-cat O2 sensor (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?topic=57205.0)

Sensor seized. I'd have taken the car out for a quick blast to get it all heated up, but car's locked up in back garden and it was just before dinner time, so I'll hit it with WD40 later and try again another time.

Job is a pain in the hoop but you'll get there.

Have you got a long handled wrench or a breaker bar?  More length, and leverage, will help get the thing moving.  Your o2 socket has a hex end to it so you can also use a bigger standard socket on the outside of it for more grunt.

Do have a breaker bar - I didn't really persevere last night, dark and cold and car was just on the ground, wasn't jacked up, so couldn't really get the bar in with the angles. there was a lot of movement around the whole assembly when I was playing around, was bit worried I might break something else, so stepped back. Won't get another chance until next weekend now, but I'll give it a go with the bar after a good hit of penetrant, got some posh WD40 somewhere 🙂

WD40 isn't your optimum for this application, it's a lubricant/water dispeller more than a freeing penetrant. You're better with something like Plusgas from cold.

Not the regular WD40 chap, this stuff:

WD-40® Specialist® Rust Release Penetrant Spray (https://www.wd40.com/products/penetrating-oil/)

They didn't have plusgas in the shop the day I bought it.

Fast acting penetrant... sounds familiar 😂

Hi Del, sorry to hear if sciatica is getting in the way of you enjoying your 2.

Wasn't sure if you'd got the brakes done yet, so was going to pass on the benefit of my experience (having done my rears last year and sheared a caliper carrier bolt in the process  >:D  ) ..........but I see from elsewhere on the forum you already have them on the car  :)

Yep post cat 02 sensors can be a real pain too, but the thing to always remember is, if you're not going to be reusing the part, you can "get medieval" (within reason).

Success! had another go today, with car jacked up on passenger side to get better access. Daylight also helped  8)

Maybe it was the fact I had better access, or the fact I'd had a quick drive in the car before hand and things had been heated slightly better, but with a bit of heaving and perseverance the sensor slackened off without any heavy tools, although the heat gun and breaker bar were on standby. Glad I didn't need the breaker bar, access was a pig, it was quite long, and angle was awkward.

The new item comes with anti seize compound on the threads, and a torque setting guide.

Put it all back together and set about resetting the fault code with Torque Pro and ELM327

EML off for now, but I'll take the car out for a drive tomorrow to see if it'll stay off.

had a play around tonight with Torque, put it to more interesting use than just reading / clearing fault codes.  Had a look at @shnazzle 's Fuel Trims Tool (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?topic=68339.0) thread. Added all PID's as per thread to Torque, and went for a drive.  Got home and checked the log file data structure matched the template - added an extra column (I didn't have G(calibrated) in my files, so just inserted column in same place as the template log file, and entered zero values all the way down the set). Et vóila! I've attached my log file in case anyone's interested  :) (car's stock, don't imagine there's much excitement there for tuners)

Very clean logs. Running a bit richer probably due to dropping temperature. Good stuff!

Been a while. Not been up to much, due to you know what, until last week. 4 months parked outside, with only 1 or 2 small  outings, has been bad for the car, particularly in the braking department, which was noticeable last weekend on the camping trip. But, It gave me a chance to try out the last item on my personal list of things I'd like to be able to do maintenance wise with the car, which is to replace the front discs and pads myself.

I've had the parts sitting a while - Discs, pads,  pad carriers, Ceratec grease and Halfords Brake Cleaner.

DSC_0070.JPG

Looked manageable on paper. Read the How To:  Fit front brake pads & disks - By Richie (https://www.mr2roc.org/forum/index.php?topic=11550.0), and had a look at the repair manual.

Things looked pretty grim with the wheel off.

DSC_0071.JPG

Caliper needed a bit of hammering to open.

DSC_0072.JPG

Pads needed a bit of hammering to free out of the carriers.

DSC_0081.JPG

Carriers needed.. you get the idea. Lots of wirebrushing needed.

DSC_0093.JPG

After about 5 hours of reading, thinking, hammering, wirebrushing, going back to the shed for more tools, I managed to fit the disc and the pads.

DSC_0095.JPG

Had to improvise a bit with the piston rewind tool, I've lost the plates.

DSC_0096.JPG

Everything back together, brake fluid resevoir cap back on, a few dabs of the pedal and side 1 is complete. I'll do the other side during the week, should be faster next time now I know the sockets sizes, torque settings and have all the tools ready.

Got to try my hands at another job today, changing out the steering pipes.

Car's sat for many months unused (again), I took the car out for a drive the other week, which revealed a couple of issues. Rear brakes binding, and, err, an empty power steering fluid reservoir yes I really should have checked level before I set off). Bad noises, bad smells, not good.
Took it to Mechanic for a look, and found the source of the leak at the couplings to the steering rack. He said Toyota gave hi a ridiculous quote for parts (can't be sure, but I'd guess they'd supply a new pump as well at a quote of £460 for parts only!). So he topped up reservoir to get me home, and once home I took the frunk out to see for myself.

DSC_0445.JPG

DSC_0446.JPG

I got a suggestion to check a well known auction site for replacement pipes at around £85.
I called Toyota to buy fluid, and the part number they gave me was for SMT transmission fluid. I called back to question if the part number they gave me was definitely correct, to which they said yes. Did some reading here and elsewhere on appropriate fluid, just to double check. Found a few threads, and ended up going for Ravenol E-PSF.
Also bought a crows foot wrench set.
All in I spent ~£135.

DSC_0452.JPG

once the old pipes were out, I laid them out next to the new ones to compare, and they looked OK, although the sections for the rack couplings were a little misaligned.

DSC_0458.JPG

the job took me (going slowly) about 2-3 hours.

As soon as we're allowed out of Glasgow for sure. It may even have a new fruitier zorst by then, old one on the way out. Cost = approx 3/4 of an MR2 (a whole MR2).
